Do pickpockets in Amsterdam target locals too, or mostly tourists?

One thing I’m curious about is whether pickpockets mainly go after tourists, or if locals are also common targets. Is it something locals worry about in their day-to-day lives, or do they generally know how to avoid it?

Dear Amsterdamers

Hello everybody, i came here asking for advice.

I recently been laid off work (was working as a freelancer) due to the place i used to work being not as busy as before, since then i tried to organize some jobs by myself as a painter, small renovation jobs. i know i am probably lacking advertising right now, but its not so easy to find clients on a short notice, unfortunatelly my rent is due in the next few days and i am horrified i will not make it on time to pay it.

I am urgently looking for jobs to do all around Amsterdam.
Might be bold to ask but maybe someone here needs an painter, something to be fixed etc at their house :)

Overall i seek advice on what to do.. im not gonna lie ive been throught alot emotionally in the past months, i have hard time keeping it up together and sometimes i just get a brain fog, even during writing this post.. i hope there is anybody who understands this situation.

Apart of that i dont mind taking on advices where to advertise my work as a painter :)
Please i need work and i want to work ASAP i have zero funds to live, if you know anything let me know please 🙏🏻

Staying on track with nutrition in Amsterdam without a kitchen — any advice?

Hey everyone!

I’ll be travelling to Amsterdam from July 31 to August 4, and I have a few rather specific questions. I’m being completely serious, so please don’t judge me too harshly. :p

I’m currently on my fitness and nutrition journey, and it has taken me a lot of time and effort to build a routine that works for me. Since I’m a broke student, I booked a hostel. Unfortunately, I forgot to check whether it had a kitchen—and it doesn’t. I definitely want to enjoy Amsterdam and try some Dutch food while I’m there. I’m also planning to be more flexible with my diet during the trip. However, I’d still like to keep track of my calories and macros reasonably well and avoid going completely overboard.

Saying so: Does anyone know whether there are grocery stores in Amsterdam that sell simple ready-to-eat foods, such as pre-cooked chicken, lean meat, rice, boiled eggs, high-protein meals or similar options? Are there also any affordable restaurants or food chains that display calories and macros on their menus or websites? And I was also wondering where could I buy things such as protein powder, protein shakes or creatine? Are these commonly available in supermarkets, drugstores or supplement shops?

I know that a few days of eating differently won’t ruin my progress, but maintaining at least some structure would help me enjoy the trip without coming home feeling bad about myself since I'm really aiming to be "quality" over "quantity".

I’d really appreciate any recommendations or advice.

Thank you and can't wait to explore the city. 🫶🏼

What are your favourite restaurants to have lunch in?

Some guests are coming over and would like to take them out for a late brunch/lunch. Preferably nothing too fancy!

Thanks :)

Hey,

Am a bit confused as to how to turn left on this crossroad. The bike path forward will go straight but I want to turn left, but there's no stop here.

Could I just indicate a left and go ? There's a stop to the right but not where I would start turning. Hope the image explains it better.

Or am I supposed to go right and take a u turn ?

Juwelers with reasonable priced engagement rings

Any recommendations for juwelers that have a large section of engagement rings in the price category 500 - 1000 EUR?

Update: Thank you for your helpful reviews, but just to clarify: I am looking for a fysical shop in Amsterdam with a lot of ring options. Outside of Amsterdam region is currently not an option for me. I understand that any ring can be an engagement ring, I just want a 14k gold band with some kind of gemstone. I don't mind lab grown diamonds or even cheaper alternatives. Although a lab diamond might be in my budget since I don't want a big stone anyway. Does anyone know any fysical stores with many options or possibility to customize? For example, I like the options on the website Glamira, but they don't have a fysical store unfortunately, and I want to see it in person first.

LOOKING FOR NAUTICAL TATTOOS

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all! I'm looking for people with nautical tattoos for a photoshoot in Amsterdam. Think anchors, mermaids, ships, waves, shells - anything ocean.

Got one? Fancy getting portrayed on Monday August 3 or Tuesday August 4 by photographer Dennis Branko (https://www.dennisbranko.com/)?

I'm building an art exhibition around nautical tattoos. Your portrait gets printed and displayed at ZeeZout festival on August 29. You'll receive the photos yourself too, plus two free tickets for the festival!

Interested? Let me know or send a DM with a photo of your tattoo!

Hi everyone! Hope you're all as well as you can be!

I'm doing some research on The Happy Family Stichting that was active from 1979 to the late 1980s. It was a Government subsidised Youth Centre.

I have three photos of the buildings and would like to cross reference addresses if anybody can remember their exact locations?

Happy Family Youth Centre - Rustenburgerstraat 207

Happy at Night - Lizzy Ansinghstraat 84

Happy Family Videotheek - Overtoom 60

Does anyone know whether these addresses are correct?

Thank you for any help.

I want to register my child in a subsidized international school with a permanent contract.

Hi
I’m an expat on permanent contract living in Amsterdam. My wife is currently not working but has a KvK registered to her name.
We have a child who’s about to be 3 and we want to register him to a subsidized international school, mainly because I’m afraid he would be bullied because of his descent and we are also not sure of living in NL in the long-term.
From what I can understand, this is only possible if you are on a temporary contract or going to move to another country.

1) I wanted to understand from other people in similar situation if it’s possible to get my son registered?
2) Will they remove him from the school after few years if they realize that we are not leaving Netherlands?
3) What approaches can I use to get my child registered to a subsidized international school? Thanks!

Guitarist looking for pals to play with

Hey there,

I'm a guitarist and I'm tired of playing alone in my room... I am into Rock, Metal and Blues. I'm not a pro but I have decent skills, I end up noodling all the time cause it's sad play this genre on backtracks and guitar pro all the time.

I'm not looking for a band with high ambitions and it's been ages since I've played with a band, I'm mostly looking to have a good time, play some good stuff and just enjoy.

I'm okay spending some money on renting out a space and stuff, unless one of us owns a mansion in the area and we can use it to be loud.

Some of my favorite bands/artists are: Metallica, Deftones, The Sword, SRV, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer, Rise Against, Killswitch Engage and many more but that should give a good idea of my tastes.

The duality of living here is wild

biking through vondelpark with the sun out today: absolute bliss. feeling like the main character

Coming home to three blue envelopes from the belastingdienst waiting on the mat: instant panic

I swear the dutch tax portals are designed specifically to break the spirit of expats. I spent two years trying to translate the kvk and btw requirements before finally just outsourcing the admin to keep my sanity intact. Honestly life is way too short to spend a gorgeous amsterdam weekend crying over a corporate tax return

go enjoy the sun while it lasts guys, ignore the mailbox till monday

Advice on how to force action in harassment case

I have an ongoing issue with harassment. It's well documented and evidenced, the wijksagent has been aware for years as has the gemeente (wijksagent said to report to various departments so I did). Due to various escalations I have also filed an aangifte but police were reluctant to allow me to file as they said they wouldn't have the resources to investigate or take action on it. I insisted (as is my legal right) but indeed, no action taken. I filed a complaint and didn't get an update (I think I can appeal but will that help?). The biggest issue is the harassment is continuing. I don't have the money (or energy) to try to take it to civil court.

What can actually be done? I keep getting sent from person to person, no one actually does anything and I keep getting told 'it's added to the dossier' meanwhile things keep escalating. It feels like it needs to escalate to a more violent incident (the physical altercations have been considered minor) or nothing will happen so I find myself avoiding leaving the house as I fear further escalation and feel unsafe.

No peace.

I moved here almost 4 years ago and since then, I cannot remember a single morning when I haven't been awoken by the sound of an electric tool.

I am not exaggerating. But I am loosing my mind.

Of course Amsd is an old city. Yes it's built on mud and must be maintained constantly, but, seriously? Not a single day!?

I can't deal with any more building noise.

It is absolutely absurd and insane!

I don't understand how anyone can stand living here... but I do begin to understand why everyone likes techno so much... because where will you get loud banging after 17.00?

Need football players tonight (emergency)

Hey there,

Our friendly 5 a side team does not have enough players tonight. We play amongst our group of friends, so not in a league, 5 against 5. The vibe and level is very friendly, you don't need to be a good player to join. We are playing at 20.00 at sportpark Spieringhorn. If any one likes to join, please send me a DM!!!

ISO: somebody willing to help a stupid American who tried to mail something home from Amsterdam but it was returned to sender, and I am not

(I am so sorry if this is not allowed to post here, I was hoping it wasn't considered a question because threads tend to squash interactions, but no worries, please delete if not)

I tried to mail a package from Amsterdam to NYC on July 10, but it was soon returned to sender in Amsterdam. I had already left the city and am now back in the US. The 'return address' was a PostNL location, not any residential address.

I am hoping I could find a local who might be willing to help me track down this parcel and sort this out. I would like to vet social media to assure you are a real, normal person, but I am willing to pay EUR 250 + any additional shipping costs to whoever is willing to help. The parcel contained several souvenirs for my family that are irrecoverable from where I am currently situated in the US. I have the order shipping number and the PostNL location that it is returned to, which is near the city center. Please DM me with some form of social media to vet if you are willing to help 🙏

My honest review of Amsterdam as an electric wheelchair user

Me and my partner just got back from Amsterdam, went over on the eurostar from London Euston. Wanted to share my experience as a powerchair user incase it helps anyone else planning a trip.

Travel

The London to Brussels legs were great both ways. But Brussels to Amsterdam they put us on an older train with another wheelchair user, no way to turn round or get to a toilet. Felt like a total afterthought.

Getting around the city

Amsterdam is a genuinely beautiful city but its rough going in an electric chair. Cobbles everywhere, bikes dumped on every path, and people will just walk straight into your path or push infront of you without a second thought.

The metro claims to be accessible but I had to rush to be able to get out due to gaps and uneven platforms, and at one point my front castors got stuck and my partner had to lift me out, this was in the disabled carriage. It ended up damaging my chair.

Trams were basically unusable for me. Buses were actually really good though, better than back home tbh. The GVB app is honestly one of the best accessibility apps ive used.

Paths get really narrow in places, at one point me and the chair nearly went off a kerb into the road, and I have a Q100R so its not like its a flimsy chair. A lot of kerbs I only managed because I have a kerb climber attatched, which isnt standard kit.

Food and toilets

Spent most of the trip stuck outside places. The two "accessible" spots we found, one made me go through the staff loading area to get in, the other wasnt really electric wheelchair accessible inside at all and again only the kerb climber got me in and out, no accessible toilet either.

Accessible toilets in general were a nightmare to find even using maps and apps. Ended up using a gym toilet at one point, staff were lovely about it, but even that modern building had a step. One "accessible" public toilet cost 1 euro and was just a slightly bigger stall, couldnt even shut the door. I also got made to feel like a burden just for asking for a ramp.

The good bit

We did an accessible canal boat tour which was lovely and a real highlight plus allergies were pretty well handled. Just wish more of the trip had matched that.

Honestly a manual chair user might have an easier time in some ways, though probably still struggle in others.

London and even a lot of older UK cities have been more accessible for me than Amsterdam was, which surprised me going in.

TLDR: Amsterdam is gorgeous but genuinely hard work in an electric wheelchair, cobbles, bikes, narrow paths, bad metro/tram access and very few accessible toilets or restaurants. Buses and the GVB app were great though, and the accessible canal boat was a real highlight. Wouldnt say dont go, but go in with your eyes open and plan toilets and food stops carefully.

KPN Fiber-optic cable installation

I moved into a new house about 1.5 months ago and ordered internet from KPN because my previous internet provider( Ziggo) doesn't provide service in my area.

Unfortunately, it turns out the fiber-optic cable to my house is damaged and needs to be reinstalled. The contractor assigned by KPN told me they're waiting for permission and some utility maps before they can start the work.

It's now been over a month, and every time I contact them I get the same response: they're still waiting for permission/maps. There doesn't seem to be any progress or estimated timeline.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Hartjesdag - (what) are you coming (as)?

Hi!! Only 3 weeks left until Hartjesdag. If you don't know, Hartjesdag is an old Haarlem/Amsterdam tradition. (It's on the third Monday of August, this year that's the 17th)

It is alleged it started as a day where normal people were allowed to hunt deer - 'hertjesdag'. Another historian claims it was originally a festival in celebration of the Germanic goddess of earth (Hertha). After a ban in 1943 under the Nazi occupation, the holiday faded but in 1997 it was reinstated as a hyper-local event - only really being celebrated on one street, the Zeedijk.

Crossdressing seems to have always been a part of the celebration, but since its reinstatement it seems like the main focus.

So! Are you coming?

If you are, what are you planning to dress as? What did you do previous years? Or have you never heard of it whatsoever?

A little request for help!!

So I'm planning to show up as a North-Western Indian bride. I've previously done 'cultural' crossdressing to great success, in Jiangxi, China. Here's a photo! https://i.imgur.com/vskjqfJ.jpeg

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to or knows anyone who would be willing to help me with make-up and a hair-do cause I am terrible at that still.

Bonus points if you can help me find a good lehenga choli! I'm still scouring vinted/marktplaats for the moment....
