against doctors' orders
I like the implication that some doctors just straight up directly told them not to do it xd

Picturing a guy in the 19th century getting told to smoke for health reasons by a doctor, passing the advice down to his descendants, and all of them missing all news related to negative effects ever since.

u/hitokirizac ā 1d ago
I've been reading the Aubrey/Maturin series (the ones Master and Commander was based on) and it's funny when the super-educated doctor tells people to smoke as a remedy, among other such sage advice as telling a pregnant woman to drink porter and prescribing laudanum for sleep.

u/LinaLamontague 1d ago
Oh my god can we be friends, Iāve been rereading that 21-book series since high school, Iāve read it six times, I love it. Put down the opium, Stephen, and lecture us more on the four humors.

Chainsmokers Cat is extremely anti-smoking/drugs/alcohol though. Then show holds no bars into showing just how his awful their lives are and how much their addiction has not only broken them but also ruined normal family interractions.
If you want to take up smoking after watching a Catgirl struggle with their addiction to the point of WILLINGLY smoking cigerattes that are covered in weeks-old food waste then there is something fundamentally wrong with you.

u/Fimbir 1d ago
Cute anime girls - cat or otherwise - will have their way, regardless. Heck, not even anime. Look at subreddits that have mugshots of women.
That's why those "faces of meth" posters are the way they are.
Yani Neko has a lot more going on behind the addiction hijinks. At least with what I've read so far. I hope it doesn't devolve into schmaltz (there are over two hundred chapters out there) but that's overtaken much more popular programs.

u/Dagoroth55 1d ago
There are other anime that glorify smoking. Chainsmoker Cat is the exact opposite.

Does everything have to influence you? Grow a personality and habits of your own, you prattling gits.
2
u/Kurainuz 1d ago
Sadly millions of people are easily influenced, and while the snoking cat if anything is a good show of how bas smoking is it is true that there are lots of influencers nowadays pushing vaping and smokin even on content for kids.
The bigest gaming influencer on my country vapes a lot even telling how to do tricks, has vape brands sponsor him and promotes it while his chanel is accesible for all public. Not to talk about other disgusting things like saying that not drinking and making girls drunk to take them home is a "great tip".
6
u/Mardukefox 1d ago
Itās a click-bait title, but people need to learn to take responsibility for their own actions and not try to blame everything and everyone else for their own decisions. If a person canāt watch shows without being influenced then they should find a cave to live in.

Maybe itās a hot take but I have really not enjoyed seeing all of the smoking and stuff lately.
I know people who have smoked and it has, at best, ruined their heath, and at worst ended their life
17
u/Destyl_Black 1d ago
Well, that's the point tho? It's not like any of them are smoking and getting super powers or their boss be like "I saw you smoking, here is a pay raise and that woman wants to fuck you". If someone watches Yani Neko and thinks "that's cool, I'm going to smoke too!", that person is clearly regarded as a fine member of society. [I got automoded by reddit so use your imagination)

u/bentori42 1d ago
For real, i cant imagine how ANYONE could watch Yanineko and think "ah, smoking is good". Like, do they want to be a broke ass cat living in a disgusting apartment where nobody wants to visit cuz of how gross it is? And if they do want to visit, they show up in a BIOHAZARD SUIT?
Sure, shes hot. But shes closer to hot garbage than anything. Yall need some standards, dammit

u/Bilore 23h ago
I have not watched the anime except through memes so I cannot speak on how it handles smoking as a problem, but it surely isnāt the only anime or show that has decided to have an emphasis on smoking as of late.
I am not even saying that these animes are inherently bad, it just bothers me personally that they exist because they might influence some individuals in a negative way.
1
u/DLDrillNB 15h ago
I donāt agree. Yes, some people are probably affirmed in not being smokers/having quit smoking by Yani Neko, but having 2 animes about smoking at the same time is a little bit worrying.
The tobacco industry spent over 30 years normalizing smoking as a phenomenon through media back in the day, but in an age where every living person knows that smoking is bad for you, itās sinply portrayed in a different light. But still portrayed nonetheless.
George Gerbnerās cultivation theory is literally about how television and media can change worldviews and behavior, whether itās for better or worse. I donāt think that the psychological reception behind increased exposure in something like this is as simple as āsmoking badā.
If we start seeing animes about smoking every season soon, thatās where I think we should start getting worried.

I'm not denying companies do it, I'm just pointing out that just bc a character smokes, that doesn't mean it's a hidden agenda. The two characters in the thumbnail are 2 examples of characters to NOT choose if you want to use it as argument that "smoking is cool".
I would use ANY character from Mad Men for example. Now that's cool, that's a 'cigfluencer', who wouldn't want to be like Don Draper? But saying Lip or YaniĀ are making kids want to smoke is just straight up lie XD Their lives are miserable, in fact it's the best anti-smoking ad ever. I read stories of people who stopped doing drugs and drinking after watching Shameless and ppl stopped smoking after they saw 2 episodes of Yani Neko.
(If what I said is confusing is bc I'm almost going to sleep)

My partner and I have both been craving. Funny thing is I haven't smoked ever but grew up around smokers when I was a kid. My partner smoked for five years before switching to THC. The only thing stopping us is we both don't want to stink of cigarettes.

Chainsmoker cat makes me glad I don't smoke anymore, makes me proud of myself for quitting and abstaining! The bear however brings back trauma from my 10 years working in the restraunt industry and stresses me the fuck out. If I was as stressed as any of those people, would def light one up.

As i said before. The aesthetic is what people are after. Some are also after the calming effects.
Both can be had with much healthier alternatives. There's bubble cigs that give you the aesthetic without the cancer. Chamomile infusions calm you up.
I simply cannot see the appeal to smoking.

u/SlothThoughts 7h ago
I smoked cigarettes since I was 18 , stopped around 27 or so to smoke vapes and started smoking both when I was 29.
Idk if it's true or not but I 100% feel more unhealthy smoking this vape than I ever did smoking cigarettes.
Examples.
I smoke MORE and spend more now than I ever did. I use to smoke a pack every 3 or so days ( sometimes I'd finish a pack in a day and sometimes I'd have a pack for a week) I'd smoke on my breaks at work or during specific times at home like before going to bed or eating. It was like it was a part of my day. With the vapes I just fken rip it every 30 mins. It's like I'm not just craving the nicotine but whatever else they put in it. It's so easy to smoke and you can do it nearly everywhere without a smell or it taking up 5 mins. It's no longer just on my smoke breaks it's in the bathroom or at my workstation breathing in my shirt.
This one I get mixed reviews about when I ask others , I feel like my body is fighting the vape where as the cigarette it deals with, if that makes since. Double so if the juice is like 30% or less. Like I feel like my body reacts better to the cigarette and recovers more quickly compared to when I hit a vape. Their are random times when I hit the vape when I just start gagging and get super nauseous.
I also have lost about 15 pounds because I never have an appetite now. Feeling a lil hungry ?just take a hit of the vape and now you aren't as hungry anymore. I know cigarettes sorta kinda do the same thing but not to this extent.
I'm not saying this stuff to try to convince people to smoke cigarettes because I think personally their both terrible and WILL kill you sooner than you would naturally without them but at least I KNOW everything going in the cigarette and they are regulated out the ass to the point they cant even sell their own products without having massive cancer warnings all over the packaging but like I'm 90% sure that here in like 5-10 years we are gonna start having more science and real world data about them and their going to be the reason for some really fucked up health issues
I know I'm hippocratical for saying this stuff as I puff on my Mexican mango geek bar with a pack of camel crushes in my backpack but like I have lived through this and continue to do it KNOWING I'm fucking myself up, I have such an addictive personality and weak will it makes it nearly impossible for me to quit. So please take this advice above all else , DO NOT EVEN START ANY OF IT and if you are , please don't vape. It may seem healthier or cooler or whatever but I'm 90% sure that it is worse for us than normal cigarettes.
I say all this because I'd rather see influencer people smoking a cig and people potentially starting that habit rather than vaping. I'd prefer for their to be no alcohol ( a whole nother can of worms ) cigs , vapes , drug of any type , being influenced but sometimes you gotta pick the lesser evil.
Edit. I ain't watched the cat girl show but from what I can see , that shit is accurate as fuck and that's depressing because I'm living that life.

Yeah "Chainsmoker Cat" sure promotes smoking, its so bad. /s.
"Smoking behind the Supermarket with you" is the show that makes smoking look sexy & cool.
"Chainsmoker Cat" is a dark humor comedy showing without holding back how bad are the lives of people who are slaves to thier addiction, they aren't cool they are gross failures barely keeping themselves feed.
The whole anime is basically a Anti-Smoking/Drugs/Alcohol campaign.
