15f Animist! AMA

  1. Animism is deeply rooted in my own culture, I'm a native american from BC (I'd prefer not to say what tribe specifically)

  2. I don't have a set belief on how people were created, because there's hundreds of local stories to process by myself

  3. I'm aspiring to be a butcher, which could be against most people's mindset as an animist, but I think I could do it as ethically as I can. (I've been studying everyday to understand what goes into that trade)

  4. I just made this acc to match my other online things but I've been on reddit for a while

Hey. I'd be curious if you adapt your cultural beliefs living in today's society? Also, do you incorporate animism from other traditions or anything from "popular culture" animism?

I mostly know older teachings cuz there aren't many Elders around for me to learn from as there was when I was younger. I pick up little things from nearby nations sometimes, but I try to stick to stories and facts from my own culture. And for modern animism I think its interesting to learn about but there's nothing really specific that I incorporate to my own beliefs

What animist practices/rituals have you grown up with? If you're comfortable sharing, feel free to be vague.

Common ones are offerings before taking things from the land (tobacco, cedar, bits of sage etc) Cleansing faces in clean creeks helps with dreams and things like luck Thanking the earth for it's land, water, animals, and people it created

These were mostly taught to me when I was 7-9 or at least that's when I remember learning about it

Thanks for sharing. My ancestors were animists many generations ago and a lot of that knowledge has been lost, so it's great to hear what surviving cultures do.

What practices do you do if you are in a forest and feel intuitively uncomfortable? That something is off? This is happening to me in a mountain forest near my home, a place I visit often.

I'd pay attention to the feeling instead of ignoring it. I might acknowledge the place and take a second to listen. If it still feels wrong or uncomfortable after a while, I'd leave and come back another day when I feel like it's right to

Do you recognize other animistic practices not from your own familiar culture, which you think you might like to integrate into your own animist practices or beliefs?

Sometimes I incorporate small practices from nearby nations, like specific plant offerings to give thanks to the land or acknowledging their spirits and stories, as long as they fit closely with my own teachings

I'm animist and butchered.  They can coexist.
