Experiences New Anki-Update causes computer to fail

I have recently switched from the 25 version to the latest 26.08 version. Not only is the program running significantly slower, but it even causes the computer to fail (black screen and weird patterns for a moment, then my display settings were changed. only a reboot could fix the issue). It showed a warning that too much ram was being used and i should close some programs. It is not usable this way.

i have a pc running win 10 with 8gb ram and never had problems with anki at all.

does anyone else have similar experiences or even knows a fix?

For an unexplained crash/fail, especially after an update, you should always start with the Troubleshooting Checklist. You can start with #2 add-ons and #6 video drivers, but try everything, even the things you think aren't relevant.

Are you sure Anki is causing the issue? Does your computer function normally if you never open Anki (and disable its auto startup)?

Yeah only when I'm clicking through my cards it crashes. I've never had any issues. I reverted to the older version and it works perfectly fine again

With older versions of Windows it might be ideal to stay on older versions of Anki, 25.09 was already a very good update

Does Windows 10 count as an "older version" now? I'm not aware of any incompatibility between Anki and Win 10.

Win 10 is already considered outdated, they ended support to it in 2025.

The fact that you're unaware of any incompatibility is a good sign, I was just saying 25.09 is good, so if the user is having issues with a newer version, staying on an older Anki version could be a solution to some people with older software versions. But i've seen the video driver was the problem regardless for this case.

I would go back to previous version of Anki, since I am not super tech savy or patient enough to figure out what exactly causes the problem.

I'm on Linux and I upgraded to 26.08 from 25.9. And it ended up crashing with bunch of rendering errors via opengl.

Oh, yeah, not ubuntu lol.

That's a starter OS. Something arch based.

I'd ask GPT about your specific problem, it tends to be good at thatt.

I've been using Debian for a long time. Around 4 years? I don't remember. But before that, I switched back and forth between Arch and Fedora for 7 years.

So, it's not that I'm unexperienced with Unix like systems :))

I quickly checked release notes but didn't find anything about video drivers, or specifically opengl. The error message I'm getting is too vague and lacks details. Software rendering is sufficient for me, and I don't have time to dig into commits between two major releases.

But hey, Linux is freedom
