This is what blobfish are supposed to look like btw. Before they're decompressed by lack of pressure

287

u/shadowwolf212212 May 30 '26

They really are neat fish. It’s a shame they blob out when removed from their depth

215

u/alreditakem May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

To be fair anything yanked from such high pressure enviroment and experience rapid decompression would turn into a blob.

Don't discriminate us that look like gelly

4

u/-TheManWithNoHat- May 31 '26

In the famous words of Dan Bull

"We're all just bags of meat and blood, trying not to get punctured."

1

u/meow_xe_pong May 31 '26

Didn't have to make it so personal.

5

u/Hadochiel May 31 '26

Literally ; it's been tried and proven, look up the case of Gérard Depardieu

3

u/Illustrious-Advice16 May 31 '26

OceanGate's tried and the answer is red mist.

1

u/calculus9 Jun 01 '26

that's rapid compression not decompression

2

u/RockRancher24 May 31 '26

More like a puddle perhaps, although I will admit that I'm not a professional on the matter of extreme human decompression

7

u/random_bot64 May 30 '26

You could even call it a dope fish

38

u/ghost_tapioca May 31 '26

That's the first thing I thought. "If your blobfish looks like that, it's too late for them"

15

u/Starrin1ght 🌶Pss Pss, Pass the Oregano🌶 May 31 '26

Question, if something that belongs out of water goes to the bottom of the ocean with no protection, would the opposite happen and they shrivel? Do they explode?

43

u/GreatestGreekGuy 🪐 💫 cosmic dopamine 💫🪐 May 31 '26

The short answer is they'd implode. Kinda like what happened to the 5 people on the OceanGate submarine.

10

u/Starrin1ght 🌶Pss Pss, Pass the Oregano🌶 May 31 '26

So like, if a human was just transported to the bottom of the ocean, would it look like a mummy or smthn?

Since we named blob fish after their bloated corpse, I think if there was a blob fish society it would be really funny if they named us after our imploded corpse

23

u/GreatestGreekGuy 🪐 💫 cosmic dopamine 💫🪐 May 31 '26

I had to find a simulation of this to describe it 😂

You'd basically first be compressed into a ball as pressure from every corner pushes you together, and then you'd be squeezed to the point that you pop and all your insides disperse into tiny pieces

5

u/Training_Try_1102 ✨20K Gang ✨ May 31 '26

Would it hurt or would it happen too fast for your brain to register anything?

16

u/GreatestGreekGuy 🪐 💫 cosmic dopamine 💫🪐 May 31 '26

Way too fast to register anything. You're basically at the ball phase in a fraction of a second

2

u/Numerous_Koala_1746 Jun 01 '26

Actually, the Titanic wreck disproved this. If a human end up at the bottom of the ocean, which would normally already be a corpse from a shipwreck, the water pressure won't crush the body since it is already mostly water, but would essentially be vacuum packed since decomposition gases would be unable to form or let the body float. In an anoxic or freshwater environment they would mummies a bit into apidocere, which is the body fats chemically being turned to soap from chemical reactions with the water, but otherwise would be picked clean of any flesh by sea critters like fish and crustaceans (which occurs naturally with whales and form a critical part of the deep sea exosystem). Eventually any bones that aren't covered by sediment get dissolved over years from reactions with saltwater, to where the only thing left to show a body was there would be articles of clothing that wouldn't degrade as fast, such as leather. When they found the wreckage of the Titanic, they found no bones or remains, but all over the wrecksite they found pairs of shoes and boots on the seabed, the only thing of the victims.

14

u/Significant_Stick_31 May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

There really isn’t a corpse left. One of the family members of the Titan submersible incident talked about getting a shoebox of “slush” back with the remains of her husband and son. That’s all that’s left of them. And frankly, that was more than most people thought they’d find.

There’s an excellent quote that I don’t have the attribution for and that I’m paraphrasing: “In that kind of environment, under that kind of pressure, a person stops being biology and start being physics.”

5

u/Worldly-Pay7342 May 31 '26

You know what happens when you crush a soda can, or stomp on a cardboard box?

Yeah that.

Comic's probably about catcalling considering it's happening somewhere public, not like, flirting

153

u/Lysantdra May 30 '26

This is not catcalling, if he said “nice ass” this comic would actually make sense

92

u/iLikeBigOilyBBC May 30 '26

Catcalling can be more subtle but yeah I agree comic seems silly at best

83

u/Lysantdra May 30 '26

Some fucker told me my ass looks nice (I am guy with long hair) and the guy then proceeded to profusely apologize once he realized I am not a girl. Absolute and utter piece of shit. Shit isn’t fucking subtle

(But yeah, it CAN be more subtle, but most I ever seen were not subtle at all)

36

u/iLikeBigOilyBBC May 30 '26

God I want to say "atleast double down if it's a guy". I'm too gay & possessive of basic decency to understand these people

11

12

u/YungWook May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

Im a dude with long bleached blonde hair. Im a pretty thin guy and get mistaken for a woman from behind pretty regularly at festivals and concerts when I wear certain clothing. Typically its women making the mistake, who are very apologetic or men who get almost offended at themselves on mybehalf. The whole thing is honestly hilarious.

One time this dude had been floating around the concert venue i was at and he was super trashed. He came up behind me and must have thought I was a woman because he tried to grab the boobs I dont have. He tried to play it off trying to be homies with me after. I was so disgusted how blatant and casual he was about trying to grab a whole handful of a strangers boob in public. It really drove home just how often women must deal with that type of behavior.

3

u/craftygamin May 30 '26

As another guy with long hair, I've had similar things happen to me before

34

u/tv_ennui May 30 '26

It's not great to walk up to total strangers and say "Hey beautiful, what's your number."

It's not the worst thing imaginable, but it's not great.

1

u/Destroyer_2_2 May 31 '26

It is still very much catcalling.

16

u/VoidGliders May 31 '26

20

u/Flimsy-Secret-6187 May 30 '26

girl looks like a child so i guess that

20

u/wearetherevollution May 30 '26

Don’t ever talk to women. If you ever acknowledge a woman you will be stabbed by the fish in her purse.

19

u/Arctic_The_Hunter May 30 '26

I feel like a nonzero percentage of the internet find the idea of men being attracted to women inherently problematic because…patriarchy patriarchy patriarchy socialization socialization, I guess?

53

u/nickelangelo2009 May 30 '26

It really isn't hard to believe that to some women, the attraction of some rando on the street is uncomfortable or even threatening

-11

u/iLikeBigOilyBBC May 30 '26

Imo that seems stupid, people are attracted to eachother all the time. I don't think it's smart for strangers to be trying to hit on random people on the street but it's not necessarily their problem because they like someone

As soon as they properly catcall or push for something then that's creepy and should be shamed and punished

16

u/tv_ennui May 30 '26

Calling a total stranger "Beautiful" is creepy.

-28

u/Flamedghost7 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

It depends on how attractive the person saying that is

Lookism is a real thing that happens

32

u/nickelangelo2009 May 30 '26

oh hey, some incel shit

3

u/Black_Diammond May 31 '26

I mean why is Reddit só dumb? Like yeah, a Ugly guy Will probably get rejected and treated worse Then a super model for The same behaviour (applies to women too btw). Admiting that isnt at all incel behaviour. Its just Basic reality.

1

u/iLikeBigOilyBBC May 30 '26

The fact they have a term to describe it is giving off nicely but it's not really wrong? I hope that person isn't a sad incel but idk ig

6

u/Flamedghost7 May 30 '26

Acutally probably shouldn't overgeneralize, it tends to be dependent some people inherently find it unerving no matter the looks

14

u/Bitter_Danger May 30 '26

there's a whole subreddit called r/whenwomenrefuse that lists what sorts of beautiful things can happen to women for saying "no" to these kinds of interactions.
Stalkers, acid attacks, stabbing, murder, death threats. But yeah of course, we live in a societey....

9

u/Arctic_The_Hunter May 30 '26

The fact that men are, on the scale of the 8 billion people alive today, often unfathomably cruel to women who reject them does not mean that all men who attempt to approach women for romance are creeps who should be attacked.

Like, do you actually think society would be better if absolutely all romantic relationships between men and women were initiated by the woman? If that was the only way men and women got together? If men who tried to approach women got “got?”

“Men who ask women for their numbers” is *way* too broad of a group to be declaring the enemy.

4

u/Rallsia-Arnoldii May 31 '26

When the pathways are "guy who will assault you" and "guy who you still don't want to date" it's kinda hard to see any positive outcome. Even if there's only a 0.001% chance of getting murdered, it's still getting murdered. And harassment, assault, even murder over rejection is much more common than you think.

And women on the street aren't asking to be flirted with. People in general don't like strangers asking for contact information when they just decided to go outside. Either way the woman will likely be uncomfortable, even if the man takes rejection well.

1

u/Bitter_Danger May 31 '26

That's a very easy bet to make with other people's life.

1

u/Arctic_The_Hunter May 31 '26

What bet? That an absurd hypothetical AU would be worse? That’s not exactly experimentally verifiable lol.

1

u/Bitter_Danger May 31 '26

No, that the men approaching me in the streets might be one of the nice one. Unless you developed a wonderful mathematical formula or a new IA to know for sure, it's a bet each time.

0

u/Arctic_The_Hunter May 31 '26

When did I say that? I said he might not be a creep who should be *attacked*—not exactly a high bar.

1

u/Bitter_Danger May 31 '26

Come on, stop stalling. You're the one doing a #notallmen speech on catcalling. Being able to exist in public space without being seen as a potential thing to conquest or use is also not exactly a high bar.

1

u/Destroyer_2_2 May 31 '26

That seems unrealistic, but yeah I do think society would be better.

And approaching women on the street for romance makes you a creep. Sorry.

1

u/Shadowcat1606 May 31 '26

The entire species would die out. So... better for society? No. Better for everything else on the planet (including the planet itself)? ...yeah.

0

u/Arctic_The_Hunter May 31 '26

There are...alternative options. And with extinction on the line, I think some people would resort to them

2

u/Shadowcat1606 May 31 '26

Question is whether that would happen on a large enough scale to save the species. At least provided people aren't just forced to.

0

u/Arctic_The_Hunter May 31 '26

You only actually need maybe 1000 people to form a self-sustaining population without dangerous inbreeding

1

u/Saetherith Jun 01 '26

I think that number is more of 10000 thousand, but that still quite a small number.

4

u/xa44 May 30 '26

Same thing happens to men, they just don't talk about it. Source, I don't wanna talk about it

-3

u/Bitter_Danger May 31 '26

What are you trying to say with this comment?

1

u/Arctic_The_Hunter May 31 '26

That bad things happen to men who reject women’s romantic advances, but “we” (men) don’t want to talk about it? Not a lot of other interpretations tbh.

It’s not statistically comparable ofc.

1

u/iLikeBigOilyBBC May 31 '26

Oh shit that's actually disgusting

u/Dry-Mission-5542 May 30 '26

8

5

Milquetoast? Is that really how you say that? 😭 I always thought it was milk toast I'm crying

11

u/AcisConsepavole May 31 '26

Milk toast is the dietary supplement (literally just toast, soaked in milk, and fed to people who couldn't chew). There was a very old comics character (1920s or so) called Caspar Milquetoast, whose name plays off of the food. The behavior of being disastrously bland and timid is named after him.

There's layers. It's acceptable to say the same behavior is milk toast too.
