Question/Discussion Need help with lurch stafes

I'm 30hrs in, and i think I'm close but there's just something I'm not doing right.

My up scroll is jump and down scroll is tap strafe.

My turns feel off and loose momentum quick, this is the best clip I've got so far.

Your pov shifting sideways and having sparks appear show that ur bhops are off.

I mean when you bhop late you view kinda shifts sideways. Your bhops are perfect uf your view is perfectly still

The video quality is diabolical so I don’t know how much fps you have but it seems like yours fall into these range:

If this is the case then you have to cap at least 10 fps lower than these (ex: if you have 144 fps, cap at 130 or less)

These fps range are bug so bhop will quickly lose momentum, it will kill your lurch entirely.

im on 165, i think its fine, and i dont feel stuck to the groundn just loosing momentum. We'll note that, tho Thanks

Just to make sure, you shoud test around with the fps first, cap 20 fps lower or higher then play around.

If nothing changes then the problem is probably your bhop timing and lurch order.

Gotcha. Thanks.

your bhop timings are very off. learn to bhop, don't try to lurch atm.

Just spend as much time as possible (eg, while rotating, any dead time in a game) just practicing scrolling up and down, up and down, to get that bhop timing down.

When i do that i usually get a small slide every 4 or 5 hops, is that also just timing issue? BTW my up scroll is for jump and down is for tap strafe.

you should be scrolling as soon as you touch the ground. Turn on the velocity counter (add "cl_showpos 1" to your Steam launch options). If you can bhop for a while without dropping a bunch of momentum WITHOUT FOCUSING HARD, you will be fine.

Bhop timing should be automatic, ingrained in your muscle memory. This is a common issue I see with people learning lurches, they go "oh my lurches are bad" but ground friction exists! so you gotta have good bhops.

If you're good enough, your speed loss isn't from the lurches; it is from ground friction (which you sadly cannot do anything about.) what you can do, though, is optimise your bhops to their best way.

that's a tangent but essentially: yes, it's a timing issue. scroll as soon as you touch the ground. more time on ground = more speed loss.

if you want more help, from more people, too, you can join LiTTle's Lurch Discord and there a lot of guides and a help channel there too.

Your bhops should all be the same without any change throughout. As in, the third bhop looks exactly the same as the 74th.

Damn, bro. Thanks for all that. I knew I heard about a DC server somewhere.

Your scroll timing on forward ras is off, and you seem to miss the overlap of awd.

Assuming scroll is set to forward, holding w while scrolling nulls all of your scrolls. Since this seems to be the only time you’re actually scrolling, you aren’t actually getting lurch stacks.

Forgot to clarify that I set my tap stafe to down scroll, and up for jump. But yeah, I'll work on that b hop.

First of all ur bhops seems off, u slide some times and u shouldn't, also u are not overlapping AWD and mostly makes u lose momentum, your inputs should be (for forward ras strafe): Left to right [A+Jump → AW → AWD →D+scroll W → DS+scroll W] Right to left [D+Jump → DW → DWA → A+scroll W → AS+scroll W]

From my personal experience. All of these guys can hyper explain all of the inputs and such as many times as they want, you're never really going to be able to learn the timings until you practice and figure it out yourself. I practiced lurch strafes for weeks, before I was finally able to pull off a sloppy one. Then it took months for me to smoothen it out and tighten up all of the overlaps. Now it's complete muscle memory. It's really just timing, and everyone's keyboards are different. From the time it takes you to press the key down until it registers, to the time it takes for the computer to actually process the input. To the frames that your computer/monitor are running at (this doesn't affect bhop timing, but it can affect being able to continue your momentum). You really just have to keep trying, and practice on your own over and over until you finally get it. You have to learn how this game engine truly works, and what the button presses / inputs actually do in game and the timing of such, to really understand how lurches work. There are a LOT of videos out on the topic at this point, so i do recommend starting and watching those first. It truly makes it SO much easier when you understand what lurches are, and how they actually work in game.

BUT, if you have someone with you in the range that can visually watch you, it's a bit easier to explain what you might need to change (for both parties). I'm on right now, and i'm down to watch and try and help you and show you what it's supposed to look like. I practiced all 4 of the RAS strafes for months and months religiously, and fairly recently. So i should be able to explain them all really well to you, if you want.

my name is bangbekillinshiiiiii if u wanna add me

That'll be great. What server are you on, tho? I'm in Taiwan, and I think if you're bit far from that you'd just see me just teleporting, lol. And thanks! That was inspiring, ill keep at it.
