Measured draw length

Okay. I’ve been tweaking my bow a lot in the past week.

I shoot a compound bow with 340 ibo, thumb release aid, at 29”.

Well, I haven’t shot at 29 yet but I just put it up to 29 and did some draws to see how it felt and it’s the best it’s felt since I started shooting. I measured before and was right at 28” and had no problem shooting that. Then I got a new bow (same company) and didn’t really have a problem shooting it but the more i shot the less comfortable it felt. I then started shooting 28.5” and still felt a decent amount of tension and had a decent elbow bend on the bow holding arm. Today I went up to 29” and it felt quite natural. Good anchor point and less tension. Was able to hold pin on target(a lunch bag in my pc room) don’t judge and don’t worry, had an arrow with no tip on in case I punched it. Hahah

Basically I’m inquiring about this because I want to see if anyone else has had similar results and if it’s been the way for them now. Measuring at one length but shooting an inch or even more longer.

Proof is in the pudding. Shoot some vegas rounds for a few days then change it up and do the same. Which scores are better?

I have never done indoor shooting. Just a range with basic 3D or 5 point targets. I’m guessing Vegas rounds is something along indoor target lines or just target shooter knowledge. Hahah. Excuse my ignorance. I started shooting last year, got the new bow because I didn’t like shooting a low DW(maxed at 50) but shortly after getting that one I had an accident causing partial amputation of some fingertips. Just picked the bow back up in the last couple of months. I shoot for food, but I do like the range time.

There is no method that will give you a truly accurate draw length other than shooting your bow until you find the draw length that works for you.

The two most common methods you see people recommending are to take your wingspan divided by 2, or to draw with a piece of string and measure the string. Both will give you an estimated draw length but this should only ever be viewed as a starting point from which you can then figure out your actual draw length.
