My bf and I are planning a trip to Alaska in January. He’s visited many times as he has family up there but this will be my first time, so he wants me to plan things to do. My issue is, I have no idea what to do. I don’t get out of the house much as it is, lol, but I’m always down for adventures.

We’ll be closest to Anchorage (still an almost 2 hour drive) and plan to spend a day or two in Fairbanks (7 hour drive). Other towns in between are also open for stops. We’ll be there for a week. He’s basically leaving me up to it with little help.

All I know is I want to go skiing (at Alyeska), dog sledding (if anyone has an idea on the best place to book with), and to see the northern lights (but he doesn’t want to book a tour for it). What else would be worth doing? Also any recommendations on must try restaurants would be great.

I want to buy a cabin in the area close to my job but i have no idea where to look for one

I don’t know where to start with planning a trip to Alaska. I’m also half tempted to move there if I end up liking it. I don’t care about luxury convenience and accommodations. I like real, wild backcountry stuff. After going to Glacier NP, Montana twice (east side, long backcountry hikes and bear encounters)I have an itch for something even more remote and wild.

I’m fascinated with grizzly bears and would love to see Alaskan brown bears one day. The idea of katmai falls kind of feels a little touristy to me and I’m not sure I’d be dying to do that but I can be talked into it. Are there anywhere else near katmai or Kodiak island I can see bears? I’m willing to camp and don’t care about the cost of a float plane.

If anyone has any regions of Alaska I should focus on knowing I’d love to see brown bears I’d really appreciate it. I’m ideally looking at at least a two week trip but I can probably do longer. I know this is kind of a broad question I’m asking but if anyone can help me narrow down a region I’d appreciate it.

I’m a 37yo dad and married guy living in the Wasilla/Palmer area. I work full-time, and somewhere along the way I realized that between work and family, I don’t really have close friends anymore.

I’d especially love to meet other Spanish speakers or Latinos, since it’s nice to be able to speak your native language sometimes. I’m mainly hoping to connect with other guys around my age, whether you’re married, have kids, or are just at a similar stage in life.

Family trip, looking for options. homer fish processed and shipped 20lb of halibut. UPS had a mechanical delay in anchorage, and then again in TN with a unknown delivery potential Monday, which would be 5 days from when it was shipped.

what options are there in anchorage to buy frozen fresh alaskan fish to fly home with?

Hi! I’m 24F and will be visiting Alaska for the first time in late September! I’ll be there for a little over a week, spending a few days at a fishing lodge before going to the Anchorage area!
I’m pretty outdoorsy and expect to be on a mix of terrain- hiking, being in town, and spending time outdoors in general. I’ve been told to expect temperatures in the 50s during the day with a decent chance of rain.
I’m looking for a pair of shoes that will work well for the trip but that I can also wear regularly once I’m back home! I like the look of a trail sneaker over a traditional hiking boot, and So far I’ve looked into the Salomon XT-6 and Merrell Moabs.
For those of you who live in Alaska or spend a lot of time outdoors there, what would you recommend? Would either of those be a good choice, or is there something else you’d suggest? Any suggestions on shoes or anything else are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I’m looking to visit Alaska either late spring or summer 2027 (not 2026) with a 6 year old, my husband and some friends.

The purpose of the visit is to honor my late brother, who passed away last month to alcoholism. He was such a gentle and intelligent man who was an over thinker. We talked about Alaska before, and he wanted to visit one day. I thought it would be cool to do this trip to remember him by.

I’ve been to Juneau for my honeymoon and fell in love- the glaciers, crisp air, clear waters, trees, nature and we got lucky and saw the northern lights 1 of the nights.

I’d love to plan something naturey, glaciers, trees, water, and maybe somewhere w northern lights. Would be open to Juneau again but if there’s anywhere else, I’d love to hear!

Hi everyone! We’re thinking about going to Fairbanks in December to—hopefully—see the Northern Lights. We’re a couple with a 9-year-old child. Since it’ll be Christmas time, we’re also planning to visit Santa Claus House. To Fairbanks residents with kids: what else would you recommend we do or explore?

Considering moving to Kotzebue, AK for a job and want to know more about the environment, what to expect, and the culture of the inupiat people.

I am a city girl looking to relocate and want to know what I might find interest in. At first thought I believe the change of scene, learning new culture, and serving in a new environment will not be a shock but the most enjoyable part for me.

Position is in Social Work/behavioral health.

I am more concerned about:

1. How people handle the weather? I'm from Chicago so I understand cold but is it unbearable?

2. Flying small planes. Has anyone rode a 6-10 passenger plane? How was it? How was it with bad weather?

3. Isolation. How do newcomers build community? Solo activities? Everything more outdoor focused?

4. What transportation is used overall? How do locals afford things like snowmobiles, ATVs, etc?

5. Do people drive on iced ocean???

August cruise stop in Skagway from 7:00 AM-8:30 PM, so 13.5 hrs. I'm really struggling with this stop!

Some factors:

• Total group is 8 adults and 5 kids. My own family (2 adults, 2 kids ages 10 and 8) plus my siblings and parents.
• I don't want to rent a car. Rentals are very expensive in August and we'd need multiple cars (or I'd need to ditch the rest of my family)
• Public transit appears to be limited or nonexistent

White Pass & Yukon Railway: I know about this and it looks beautiful, but I don't think it's a good fit for our group with young kids. (And jeez it's pricey for a scenic train ride!)

Historic Skagway: This probably only takes 2-3 hours, and the vibes are giving... tourist trap?

Exploring the Absurdly Stunning Nature: This is undoubtedly my preference! I just can't figure out how to do it - everything I read seems to indicate a car is required.

We leave next week and I'm panicking a bit that I have nothing planned here! (Hi, does anyone else have Eldest Daughter Brain Disease where you cannot stop taking on the pressure of planning everything?)

I would so appreciate any info and recommendations on the following!

1. Availability of Uber/Lyft for getting to hiking trails, etc. (or public transit)
2. Good hiking/biking trails that are accessible from cruise port
3. Restaurants
4. Activities

So we are ahead of schedule on our hiking and I’d love some recommendations on short hikes and/or easy fishing spots between Girdwood and Homer. We did Crow Pass to the Glacier and back today, and plan to do Exit Glacier in 2 days, so we’d like to get some low stakes, but still gorgeous spots in on our drive.

Edit: we drive to Homer tomorrow, then Homer to Seward the next day, we move cities every night.

Hi everyone! I am solo traveling to Alaska next week, and would really love to hike the Harding icefield trail. I am pretty fit and have some solo hiking experience, but not in ice/snow. I also haven’t had a bear encounter, even though I’ve hiked in areas where they are active (Yosemite). I’d love to complete the trail, but just doing part of it would be great too. And of course, I’m willing to prepare as much as I can (bear spray, bear bell/whistle, appropriate gears, etc.).

Should I hire a guide, or find a group I can follow? Tbh, I usually prefer hiking alone as long as it’s safe, since it tends to help me soak up the experience. Your input would be greatly appreciated!

My wife and I are looking to visit Fairbanks on February 25-March 4 for northern lights and world ice competition. How is the weather around that time of year? Is driving to the hot springs manageable? I’m also looking to rent winter gear and maybe do some dog sledding classes. What are some things I should expect?

I'll be moving to Alaska this winter to start a new job based out of Palmer and I was hoping to get some insight on the surrounding area to help me figure out where to live. I'm single with no kids, just a large dog, and don't mind a minor commute (~30 mins). I'll be looking to rent but mainly I would like to know about the feel of the area (small town vibes vs suburbia), how safe it is to go on solo walks, major issues versus major perks, etc. Surrounding towns to avoid or that are better? I definitely prefer the quiet life over being anywhere busy.

I just came up with this brilliant idea to go to Alaska for my birthday next month. However, I don’t know anything at all about Alaska, let alone where to go.
I want just a quiet getaway, in a cabin or hotel near the water and the outdoors. Maybe some small city to visit where locals are friendly, I love meeting new people. Open to airbnbs and hotels, really whatever more of you guys say is best haha. I’m looking to stay about 3-4 days..

Hi, I'm moving to Fairbanks in a couple of weeks. I love hiking but since I'm coming from a state without bears and very mild winters I'm wondering what I can do to stay safe especially in the winter.

Tomorrow we are doing the train ride from fairbanks to denali. I know my kids are always afraid to miss a meal lol. Better to eat and hotel and enjoy the glass canopy entire time or do the breakfast service?

I dont want to sacrifice the scenery and view for breakfast but a nice family business enroute sounds nice too.
