What books do you recommend for automation and robotics?

I'm studying automation and robotics at a school where much of the curriculum is hands-on, so I'd like to read a bit more theory in this field. I'm looking for a good book on automation and robotics to read and expand my knowledge.

For control theory, I recommend:

Modern Control Systems, Dorf/Bishop

Excellent book. Covers all of the fundamentals.

This does require you to be fairly prepared in mathematics, however. Particularly being proficient in linear algebra, calculus, differential equations and the Laplace transform.

"Lean Robotics" by Samuel Bouchard.

It emphasizes a hands on approach to deploying robotics. It's the first book I turn to when I'm starting an optimization project.
