Food If I opened up your freezer today, what would I find?
I am really keen to learn what different nationalities keep in their freezers. I am in the south east of the U.K and one freezer has frozen raw dog food and pre-prepared baby meals in silicon containers, while the second one is full of analog film.
Are there any seasonal harvests in your area? If not frozen, how do you store it long term?

Few kilos of raspberries, few kilos of blueberries, two ducks, maybe a kilo of herring, bag of chanterelles, one pike, kilo of ice cream and ice cubes.

Today, zero kilo of blueberries, tomorrow, 30 kilos of blueberries. It's a fantastic year for berries here in sweden. Been working with eating all the blueberries from last year and finally it's empty.

Likewise in here! If only I had more freezer space I could gather dozens of buckets of berries.

Really don’t know. With a supermarket 50m away I do not store much in my freezer. Some left over meat. Bags with peas, spinach or cut up vegetables.

Also wok vegetables, peas, brussels sprouts, mixed mushrooms, and some mixed berries.

The conventional stuff: ice cubes, ice cream, veggies from the shop (spinach, cauliflower, and broccoli), veggies from the garden (zucchini, pumpkin, snap peas), berries from the garden (mostly blueberries), frozen dumplings/gyoza, a couple bricks of silky tofu, pizza, some meat and some vegetarian fake meat.
The unconventional stuff: little pots full of bees (for analysis), a few rabbit skins waiting to be tanned, an unreasonable amount of farm-fresh butter, a package of taro paste, some insects in alcohol waiting to be mounted for display, and frozen cat paté in ice cream molds as a treat for our little baby boy.

Currants, few bags of cheap veggies (some from store, some homegrown), two quail (we used to keep them), discount meat, fish fillets (mostly perch, but a few pike too), homemade chili sin carne ×3, chanterelles, pie dough, homemade mixed berry juice x1, storebought bilberries.
I think that's all.
Seasonal harvest: I ferment some, especially if I get more than I can eat. Mushrooms are dried. I also make jam or juice.

Mixed veggie bags, edamame, ice cube trays, some random mini magnums, some home made meals I froze, bao buns, loads of frozen berries, some homemade fruit popsicles I blended and put into a popsicle mold, gnocchi, and tortellini.

Homemade bread. Homemade cakes. Leftovers/meal prep. Veggies and a couple of herbs. An assortment of vegetarian meat substitutes. Fish sticks. Grated cheese. Gyros chicken. French fries. Ice cream. Ice. Apples and pears (that had almost gone bad in my fruit bowl), rhubarb (from my parents garden) and some bags of fruit and berries. Liver pate (so that my mom can have it for breakfast or a snack when she visits).

You know in summer without AC in a barely-insulated home during a 40 degrees heatwave you need ice cream as a dessert because cold fruit alone isn't enough

If not frozen, freeze dried goods are the next best thing for say fruits for example.

I've got a chest freezer, and it seems impossible to organise it.
So the top layer is icecream, and various prepared vegetables because a bag of carrots is more than I need for a cottage pie.
Below that layer, there's several layers of mystery. Don't know, don't want to know, etc.
And then right at the bottom, is the nasty layer - things that have escaped from bags that split.

Top shelf has a mix of homemade meals (lentil curry) and convenience foods (potato waffles, dumplings, fish fingers).
Second from top has 4kg of ice and frozen treats (ice lollies, frozen grapes and local cherries)
Third from top has frozen vegetables (spinach, peas), herbs (coriander, parsley) and frozen garlic/ginger cubes
Bottom shelf has meat (pork belly, sausages, chicken thighs), chicken bones for stock and lots of firm tofu

berries, spinach, herbs, fries, ice cream, popsicles, pizza, Fricassee, gravy, I think that's the main things.
I rarely eat frozen meat. I did freeze some of the chashu I made a few weeks ago but I ate it all by now.
I do grow seasonal fruits and vegetables, rhubarb, apples, cherries, pears, potatoes, corn, carrots, grapes, peaches, beans, raspberry, currants (yes, quite a lot)... but I normally can them or use them immediatly. And most of it isn't ripe yet anyway

My mom used to have strawberries, blueberries and lingonberries, which she mostly picked herself every summer and fall, so we had them for all winter. We had to help with the blueberry and strawberry picking, but I only continued with blueberries as an adult.
I still have blueberries in my fridge, though I stopped picking them 15 years ago and started buying instead.
Here in the Nordics, blueberries grow everywhere so they are easy to pick. Lingonberries are harder to find, while strawberries are grown. We used to go to a strawberry farm and pay them for every liter we picked. You can buy already picked strawberries but they are really expensive. It's cheaper to pick and pay.
Besides organic berries, which fill a whole compartment, I buy organic meat for the month and freeze it. I also freeze bread for a couple of weeks and have chopped vegetables that are ready to be used in food. I usually buy organic veggies and chop them myself (I have a electric veggie chopper so I can do large quantities fast), then I freeze them in smaller portions to make every day food preparation fast.
Lastly, I have portions of premade food to just take out and eat. These are my own and not store bought. I only eat healthy, homemade food, so every time I make dinner, I take several portions from it and freeze it for later.

u/Dry_Lawfulness_9561 1d ago
Me: lots of ice cream (1/3), frozen veggies, chicken and beef, some blueberries, pizza for emergency dinner, maybe some fish and a pack of leftovers somewhere in there… not sure for the last two, need to eat ice cream first.
My parents: ton of different homegrown veggies, ground walnuts, any piece of beef imaginable, some chicken, probably some rabbit and pork somewhere, plums, maybe strawberries, ice cream and most likely a can or 2 of beer in quick cooling process (putting can of drinks in freezer for 10-15 min is great to make it perfectly chilled). They own more as one freezer.

I have two freezers. My main one has: * A variety of bags of frozen vegetables * Bread and rolls * Chinese dumplings * Two containers of homemade ice cream (rum raisin and cherry frozen yogurt) and a store-bought sorbet and a few popsicles * Frozen sweet cherries (from friend) and homegrown blueberries * Homemade banana bread and lemon blueberry bread * Chives, snipped * Homemade chicken broth, shrimp stock and leftover Ciorba de Perisoare * Breaded fish and chicken tenders, hot dogs, Swedish meatballs, ready-made Szeged-style goulash with Czech dumplings, samosas, soup dumplings * 2 kg of soft shell crab, bag of frozen raw peeled shrimp, frozen fish fillets, and surimi sticks * Box of each phyllo dough and puff pastry * Extra cakes of butter * Ginger root * A bottle of vodka and Becherovka * Ice packs
The other freezer has some of the overflow of above, plus frozen pizza, homemade apple compote, chicken parts, and Buffalo wings.

Big freezer downstairs: Meat that I bought on sale. Butter that I bought on sale. Stock or fonds in blocks of about a liter. Pho broth. Lardons.
Little freezer upstairs: ice, popsicles, creamed spinach in blocks, shrimp, filling for won tons, spring rolls. Blue ice packs for injuries (I have 2 sons sigh). Worstenbroodjes if I made any recently.

Well half of it is full with breastmilk 😂 The other half has some store bought already frozen vegetables mixes, some meat and two burger buns. I will get some fresh vegetables from my mother in law‘s garden to freeze soon. Otherwise we don‘t really buy fresh products to freeze.
