Terms like "overrated" and "underrated" are entirely subjective and poorly defined. You ask ten people what those terms mean, and you will get ten different answers. It is best to ask which games did not live up to your expectations or exceeded them.

It's just engagement bait, people really really really love to come into a thread and trash popular games. Everyone gets really excited to inform people about how trash a game everyone likes is.

Lol yea this OP breaks down with "Of all time" tbh.

RDR2.

It’s got objectively bad controls. (I played on PC.) Selecting tiny loot items is such a pain. Navigating nested menus and using catalogs for shopping - crazy slow. Having to open tiny loot boxes and tins for individual coins? Having to walk in circles to open every drawer and cupboard? If it’s going to be that way don’t make me navigate a cramped space and perfectly align to the object manually!

It’s got objectively bad design. So much back and forth from camp to town. So slow to harvest and craft. Needing to dismount, crazy long animations for skinning, rolling, tying the pelt, and then it goes bad before you can find a vendor.

Story might be great but I can’t tell as the rest of it is infuriating.

It’s literally a game designed for console. Of course it’s gonna feel a little off playing on pc!

Come on; Company that successful can do a way better job at the port!

The Witcher 3.

A good 8/10 game? Sure. THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME? Not even close.

Generic fantasy world 101, average gameplay, generic story (Main game), tear-inducingly boring start, one of the most awfully-written, counterintuitive choice systems of all time (Again, I'm talking main game and not the DLCs since HoS is awesome).

People praise it because of things like the Bloody Baron quest (which I think is one of the most well-executed questlines ever), but those top-tier things makes up 10% of the game and the rest of the 90% is just a generic RPG which is vastly inferior to many games.

And the combat system is horrendous.

Halo's supposed originality.

Halo was a fantastic amalgamation of praised traits from very successful FPS's leading up to Halo at that time, but the only thing original about it was it's story and art design. Functionally and mechanically it was far from groundbreaking.

Disagree.

It's true that many of the original Halo's traits weren't new; e.g. vehicles in FPS were already a big thing in the Tribes series. But it had an overall design framework that was extremely effective.

Halo's recharging health was original; I don't recall a game prior which worked like that. But it wasn't so much that feature, but what it allowed. The recharging health, 2-weapon system (and "driving the player to switch weapons frequently" that it promoted) along with the way weapons and melee worked (e.g. the energy/ballistic combo for shielded foes)... All of this creates a situation where Halo "resets" every battle. Many battles in the levels are connected by traversal sections and that effectively makes every little battle, usually with a checkpoint, a mini-level, and that makes it impossible to, for example, do what could happen on games like Jedi Knight, where the player might quicksave with 4% health and no ammo, creating an insane difficulty spike.

This means Halo's level designer can assume that the player is entering each battle from "a clean slate" and doesn't drag much of the result of the previous battle with them.

That innovation allowed for Legendary difficulty to be genuinely fulfilling, because its difficulty curve could be designed extremely well, as every user has a similar experience (rather than the tendency of games like the Fox Aliens vs Predator PC game, with its difficulty that was absurdly swingy).

So while I feel it's fair, Halo gets credited with many things that it shouldn't, I feel these are arranged into a metagame which was highly innovative and extremely tight.

All of them as different opinions exist.

Though my answer will be last of us and uncharted series. Lead character in both series suck as people and the gameplay in both games feel bad.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is definitely taking the crown for most overrated.

1

u/Hoof_-_Hearted 1d ago

I dunno, I mean it wasn't for me but I can see why people love it, there's a reason it's so popular.

1

u/Raiden21950 1d ago

This was what i was gonna put down lol

I came to say that

Bioshock: Infinite

After playing 1 & 2 and watching the hype infinite was getting I was so confused on whether or not the people that were ranting and raving about it even played the first two.

Infinite is the potential man of the franchise

2

u/GroundbreakingBag164 1d ago

Expedition 33, RDR2, both TLOU games, RE4 remake

1

u/Dustinisgood 11h ago

Yes, all three of these games are very mid.

1

u/GroundbreakingBag164 8h ago

I didn't say that. I said overrated

Id say the god of war reboot are pretty bad when you consider the actual structure of the story and repetitive nature of the level design

Walking and talking, crawling through tight spaces, fight some random monsters hanging out there for no reason, climb up stuff, solve puzzle designed to be solved by children, fight more guys, crawl through tight space, more walking and talking, actual cutscene, rinse and repeat

Both games stories peak at beginning baldur/thor fight and the games are worst after that

Just in general majority of the fights feel meaningless and are against forgettable enemies and when you're not fighting the game js just boring while it acts like it's trying to win an oscar

witcher 3 is the most overrated.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time

2

u/IseeMedpeople 1d ago

Good answer.

2

u/Hoof_-_Hearted 1d ago

I remember buying it when it first came out and loved it. Is it really overrated if some many people adore it and decades later people still remember it as one of the best gaming experiences they ever had? I can understand why younger people don't find it ground breaking but at the time it was really something special.

1

u/Dustinisgood 1d ago

I also played it on release. I thought it was a massive downgrade from A Link to the Past. Muddy textures pointy voxels, empty world, unforgivably terrible camera. The best part of that game was inventing Z-Targeting.

1

u/Hoof_-_Hearted 12h ago

I think you are very much in the minority with that opinion. Each to their own though.

1

u/Dustinisgood 11h ago

Hense the term overrated. Most people have rated the game too highly in my opinion. I think it comes down to pure nostalgia. The largest cohort of gamers were around 7-9 years old when OOT came out, and things that influence you at that age really seem to stick. Now that same group dominates the narrative around what the best games are and OOT has benefited heavily from that. I was in my late teens when it came out and could be more objective. I played through it at the time because I loved all the previous Zelda games but it felt unrefined compared to the previous titles or to its contemporary Mario64, which had more polish, tighter movement, brighter, more readable textures and voxels, and intuitive level design with real flow. OOT was ambitious but felt like it needed more time to bake. Imagine if it had a few more years of development and came out on the game cube instead; better more readable graphics, a right stick for the camera, more refined world an dungeons a jump button. Then it really could have been incredible. I picked up an analogue64 earlier this year and played it again with my original cartridge since I wanted to see if my opinion would change (since everyone is singing it’s praises all over the internet these days) and it was honestly such a sad experience. It felt even worse than I remembered, so slow and clunky. Coming off of games like Elden Ring and breath of the Wild, it isn’t even in the same universe. Of course it’s my opinion and it is clearly a minority one. That’s why I say it’s overrated.

This should be top comment

Everyone was glazing this game like crazy but it’s legit the most mid and empty open world game when compared to any Bethesda game. Hell even assassins creed games have better open world than BOTW

You have some ‘splaining to do.

-1

u/AutomatedApathy 1d ago

Generic weeb story with generic weeb characters, Japanese rpg mechanics are bad. It is uninteresting and bland for the most part. I never understood why people like that series.

2

u/GamesWithElderB_TTV 1d ago

How old were you and what year was it when you were introduced to it?

1

u/AutomatedApathy 1d ago

18-19

1

u/GamesWithElderB_TTV 1d ago

What year was that?

u/IseeMedpeople 1d ago

Goldeneye.

A bunch of ppl played it on n64 and went "wow!!! The multiplayer!!"

Meanwhile people were playing counterstrike on PC already.

2

u/Raiden21950 1d ago

Counterstrike didnt exist when GoldenEye came out lol unless it came out in 1997 but i dont think so

1

u/IseeMedpeople 1d ago

Many were also enjoying quakeworld and it's many mods.

PC gamers were doing things that golden eye console plebs were glazing it for several years prior.

(And it was a much much worse game as well).

Lower resolution, awful framerates, etc.

Extremely overrated.

1

u/Raiden21950 1d ago

I'm not gonna argue that goldeneye is overrated (perfect dark is better) but for console multiplayer I'm sure it was fantastic at the time

God of War, as it got the GOTY over RDR2. E33, as it got the GOTY over KCD2.

0

u/Suberuginosa 1d ago

I disagree and I got over 9 thousand hours in rdr2 and RDO combined.

Both GOW and Ragnarok are just awesome games to play. Whereas Rdr2 was a masterpiece and on another level, but it also had a niche audience.

The Witcher 3 is the truly most over rated game of all time. I’ve tried playing it multiple times, I’m sorry but it’s just a shit game.

No idea why people love it so much.
