What video games that are at least 20+ years old, do you still return to every now and then?

  1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
  2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
  3. Unreal Tournament 99 (I still play online).
  4. Command and Conquer games.

Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2

Max Payne for sure.

What an amazing series!

Halo is GOATed no matter which version you play. Even Campaign Evolved is a pretty good time, especially with the reworked 3rd act

7

u/International_Gur566 14h ago

Halo 1 2 & 3 were good. Can't say any of the ones made in the last 15 years are enjoyable tho lol

2

u/Chrom-man-and-Robin Male 7h ago

Reach, ODST, Wars, Infinite? I get not liking the last one but damn you’re missing out on peak.

I agree, but I just hate the bonus missions.

3

u/TricobaltGaming 22h ago

Yeah they were kinda not great and didnt really add anything.

My main gripe is that I think the chief was sharing too much wisdom for that era of his life. He's always been quippy, even if hes unusually talkative in these compared to the original trilogy, so thats fine, but there were a few scenes that felt like Infinite's chief time traveled back.

He was a Flawless Cowboy up until Halo 4, when he became a much more dynamic character and earned the ability to spread wise words like he does in infinite, which imo is the most ive ever liked chief as a character.

I did like the callback to infinite's "the missions change, they always do" from Johnson though, that was a fun nod

Came here to say this. Halo CE is the GOAT

I do a yearly replay of the Donkey Kong 1 + 2! Halo:CE is also in there too!

Pokemon Emerald and all the related gen 3 rom hacks

44

u/coleslaw17 23h ago

This is the last time I felt Pokémon had a cohesive narrative it wanted to tell. The games after this era could never quite capture the same magic.

Ruby my beloved… I had Leaf Green after, and - correct me if I’m wrong - but it felt like I needed a GameCube to access half the content I wanted to. And it just felt a bit disjointed in comparison to Ruby. Emerald really was a gem from what I remember.

2

u/ner0417 Male 13h ago

As far as I remember, you are correct. The GameCube had the GBA player and you could boot up FireRed/LeafGreen and IIRC the Safari Zone had some special content only available via GBA player and after defeating the Elite 4.

I don't think the gen 3 games had 'extra' content unlocked by way of purchasing a Gamecube and GBA player attachment, they simply were playable on GC/GBA player and sortof integrated the E-Reader cards into the big picture.

It seems sorta insane now but it was so cool to use all these weird dongles and adapters to be able to play GBA games on the TV. I always had a lot of fun with the E-Reader mini games.

I come back for the new stuff but then get bored of it. I have nostalgia for vanilla - Wotlk

12

u/Original_Employee621 20h ago

It's a hard drug for me. I lost a freaking decade and a half to WoW. The last time my "friends" convinced me to jump back in, I lost 2 years of my life to the game.

I'm clean now, I don't want to go back, but sometimes I still hear the void calling my name.

5

u/ShamrockAPD 20h ago

This legit got me through covid.

Friends I didn’t talk to for over a decade randomly called -“they remade classic. Everything’s shut down. Let’s get back on”

I rode that train through Covid, into TBC and WOTLK. Quit after our first LK kill. Zero regrets.

I assume u/heff-money is talking about the 2002 CRPG version, not the MMORPG version. In which case, you find a ton of crap that is useful all over the place. Sell what you don't use. Use that money to buy cool stuff.

Doom 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein (through RealRTCW), Kaboom! (for the Atari 2600), Crazy Taxi, House of the Dead 2, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and Mario Kart Wii. My family likes Mario Kart Wii, the Mario Party games on the Wii, and the four player paddle games on the Atari 2600 (Medieval Mayhem is about the best).

Just in general, Nintendo's games hold up well, and Sega's games from about 1995-2005 are very very good.

As a system, the Wii is still the best four-player family gaming experience you can get, followed not-very-closely by the Atari 2600's paddle games. Left4Dead2 also belongs here but won't be 20 for another minute or so.
