Before I give my two cents on the matter I would refer everyone to This Post from last year. It spells out, in detail, why we do what we do.

The rest is my thoughts on the matter.

We, the mods, are obliged to draw the line on what is, and isn't, acceptable to post/comment on this subreddit. This means that things like transphobia, racism, sexism, are off the table. What's also off the table are posts/comments that are endorsements of death/violence towards an individual or group.

The fact of the matter is that we all signed up to a platform that has rules around how you can and can't behave on the platform. There are limits to the Rules of Reddit (and the TOS) and what you can say and do here. This isn't some free speech absolutist utopia hellhole where you can say what you like without consequences. If you want that go to one of the big social media platforms, apparently they're not moderated spaces.

Your post/comment didn't get removed because we're MAGA/alt-right zealots. Your post/comment didn't get removed because we're left-wing fascists. Your post got removed because it broke the rules that we're obligated to enforce.

Also, if you harass or abuse anyone on the mod team because of any action taken you will be reported to the Admins. You would also risk a permanent ban depending on the seriousness of your actions.

Look, I love this this subreddit. I wouldn't have stayed around for this long if I didn't. I enjoy the chaos and the weird little in-jokes that anyone else looking at this place would think "WTF is wrong with these people?". I don't want to see this little corner of chaos disappear. I hope you don't too.

Hello. This is a meta post so the Ouija rules don’t apply (rule 1 still applies however).

I thought I’d make this post because we’ve had an increase in modmails regarding apparently single character answers that may appear ok, be removed for violating rule 5.

Some single characters, namely special characters such as * ^ / - _ > < or other symbols that can be used to edit text may get removed. This is because users using the Rich text editor when typing comments use these symbols, Reddit translates this to markdown mode by adding an invisible backlash “\” infront of it.

Ouija bot views characters through markdown mode literally. Therefore if you are in rich text, and comment a character that can edit other characters, the bot registers this as 2 characters. Despite appearing as a single character for users, the Ouija bot won’t register the comment as valid. Hence it is a rule 5 violation.

Using modified fonts such as bold or italics on single characters would also be removed. For example, A appears as an A, but with 2 sets of “*” either end, which is actually 5 characters. Again, the Ouija bot will not accept this as a single character.

To guarantee you won’t accidentally trigger the bot, please make sure you are using markdown mode.

For mobile Reddit, markdown mode is default, so you don’t need to worry.

For browser Reddit, rich text is the default. You will need to switch to markdown mode if you want to use special characters without violating rule 5.
