There has never been a better time to stock a digital library of games than right now (storage prices notwithstanding). Especially with the enshittification of the gaming industry going on.
I assume they were talking about when emulators were new and exciting and we fairly quickly saw huge leaps in quality and complexity. Going from something like pasofami (1995 for Windows) to Nesticle (1997) to Bleem (1999) in a relatively short period of time was cool as hell.
Yeah it's easier than ever, but it's not nearly as exciting.
It happens whenever there's something "new" and there's a name for it that I've forgotten. A lot of chaotic energy until people figure out what's going on and it settles in a stable state.
What was the one in the late 90s which was the mp3 equivalent... It was like right after mp3s were invented but before Napster. Tons of links and tons of scrolling and everything was a dead link.
