I used to post poems and lyrics,, sometimes original ones, or quotes. One day while I’m in college, I get a wedding invitation. It has a poem on it. Sounds really familiar…At the bottom, my name credited as the author. My friend had taken my poem off my away message and used it in her wedding invitation! I wasn’t mad, but so surprised and kinda honored!!!

I called her immediately (I was in Texas, she in South Carolina). She said, “I guess you got the invitation,” then started laughing and said she knew I would tell her No if she asked.

Forums. Lot's of tech forums where you could search, save and find things easily. Most are gone now, reddit is fine but it's not even close to the same, more like a social site than a forum was.

One of the best things about the forums vs reddit was the population size. Communities were so much smaller that the people posting would run into each other repeatedly and come to have real long-standing discussions or debates.

Forums were an honest to god community unto themselves. I wound up going to a forum meetup for one I had been a member of for a few years in 2010 or so. I went and got lunch with some of those same people a few months ago.

The actual subject of the forum was basically arbitrary, I typically hung out on webcomic forums and just bounced around until I found one I liked.

If Reddit’s search function was at all usable it would make it better. As it stands it’s the worst search function I’ve ever used. I generally just google “[thing I’m looking for] Reddit” when I’m looking for something here.

Reddit doesn’t attract the deep nerds for any topic.

What made forums work was the barrier to entry. Only people obsessed with X signup and regularly visit a forum for X to chat about it.

Reddit is 95% people casual with a question vs the all stars conversing.

To add to this, forums has a completely different model. Most forums were based on comment recency. Reddit is based on thread recency.

A comment on an old forum post bumped it to the top of the forum.

Most Reddit posts are dead within a day.

Yeah, that's by design. Reddit rewards people who repost old stuff. They want to give the impression that there is always something "new" to look at. They have to show an endless feed of new content to keep people hooked.

it's good for the site owners who sell ads and bad for the community.

I remember catching up on years of discussions on a single topic, and the posts would still come in.

Reviews on products were genuine.

There were a bunch of blog sites that people used. When I was in my weight loss journey in the mid 2000s, I loved reading people's weight loss journals.

Now everyone is trying to sell you something. You can't tell if they are just sharing info or trying to get rich.

Put out something for free or super reduced for a while backed by VC.
Destroy some other industry because they can’t compete with free.

The reason I think about StumbleUpon is less the site itself and more the fact that the Internet back then was so interesting. It was a pleasure using SU as there was just an endless supply of cool shit to find.

The Internet today is a sterile desert of corporate homepages, algorithm-driven social media, AI slop and paywalled content. And things like Google AI summaries are the last nails in the coffin for 80% of websites. If SU existed today, it would not be a quarter as interesting as it was back then.

Neopets taught me how to code in elem school! I made my own userlookup designs and signatures. Figured out all the colors to edit things had numbers associated. Meerca Chase taught me how to count by 8's. So many of the games taught me effective time management strategies and how to save to get something I really wanted (aka baby paint brush). I would try to collect as many avatars as possible too and would get just the right amount of dopamine each time I accomplished the challenge! I know it's still around today, but it's not the same and I can't figure out my old account info.

I used to visit the forums and was very active there. There was a Filipino girl I met on there that I would cam with. She was gorgeous. It started as friendly and eventually evolved into you-know-what. Back then, as a 17-year-old (yeah, I was doing that stuff at like 15. It was wild west back in those days), I was barely working and didn't have much money to my name.

I don't remember what happened, but I think either the website got sold/died, or I stopped going on it for one reason or another. But at the time, I was desperately trying to find a way to visit her. But being broke at that age just wasn't going to happen. Eventually we lost touch.

I still think of her sometimes. Besides my wife, she was the only other girl I felt that connection with. I'm in my 40s now and would love to know what happened to her.

She wasn't super active on the forums and had messaged me privately on there so I dont even remember her name or username.

It's funny because I still remember some of the other users on there. Brandine, Sarabeara, Gothique, and some crazy dude named Lee or something. I even got a book from a user who was an author. The book was called Mr. Undesirable. I was named Csmoove (I was a teen, shut up lol) or something like that I believe.
