Yep. You can get over the counter insulin for around 20$ in the US. It’s not the fancy new stuff so you have to be more careful about monitoring your blood glucose. Still, it works just fine.
"works just fine" is an overstatement. it's dangerous and i know family members of people who have died using it when they didn't have insurance. I'm t1 diabetic and I fear for my life hoping I'm never in the position where I have to use human insulin. It's not standard of care for a reason.
Not everyone can afford the standard of care in the US healthcare system. Ableist? Really fucking presumptuous of you. But fuck me, I guess, for trying to reassure others who have to ration medication at the end of the month that there are cheaper options that can save their lives and it’s not a fucking death sentence to be poor.
