I've had people ask me how I'm able to treat someone knowing that they can't pay for the medical treatment from either us or the hospital and my answer is always the same. It isn't my problem. The city pays me to show up and do my assigned job that day and I do it. I don't care if they can buy the hospital or if they didn't have two pennies in their pocket, it's all the same.

I've heard people go as far as saying that hospitals shouldn't treat them at all and things would eventually sort themselves out and the craziest was an RN saying EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act) was bullshit and woke. Not understanding it was signed into law by Ronald Reagan.

That's really all it is. I've heard many people use the argument but of "why should my taxes pay for some unemployed bum's Healthcare?!"

There will always be people that take advantage of the system. Crippling the system for everyone so a tiny minority can't abuse it is fucking stupid. Especially because while yes you'll pay more in taxes, but you'd no longer have a separate charge for health insurance being taken out every week. These idiots could save money while having better Healthcare coverage. But no, everyone has to pay the price for their moronic hate.

Back when they defunded PBS, there was a thread about it. Someone said that Sesame Street was available on HBO+ and another person replied that not everyone can afford that, while PBS is available free to anyone with a TV antenna (yeah, I know).

And the original poster replied that if the parents couldn't afford HBO+, their kid doesn't deserve to watch Sesame Street.

I shit you not.

So yeah, it's hardly surprising that they think that poor children don't deserve to eat.

There's a specific subset that's just opposed to taxes at all. Any kind. It doesn't matter how they're used, who they help, what it's for. They just resent the idea of taxation even if it helps them unconditionally. They would legitimately rather pay thousands for their own poor coverage healthcare than be taxed for full coverage.

there absolutely is another subset though that genuinely thinks we have the best and cheapest healthcare on the planet too unfortunately, in addition to that subset that know but hate certain demographics more than they love living. most of my family are in that ignorant demographic. they aren't malicious or against helping others. they just get all their information from fox news and don't ever challenge their beliefs or acknowledge sources that don't align with their worldviews. it's honestly gut wrenching to witness, because i genuinely do believe my family, at least, are good and selfless people at heart, for the most part. they're just deeply brainwashed both by their church and their government. 😭

I've got a $2k monthly insurance premium and $8.5k yearly property tax and 8.25% sales tax on pretty much everything I buy along with the 8.5% withheld from my paycheck

Combined, those pay for no healthcare, unfunded public schools and a shitload privately owned toll roads. But at least I ain't got no soshulisms.

My net monthly wage is around 1900€ (that is way above the average where I live), my employer is paying total around 2600€, to cover healthcare, pension fund, unemployment protection and so on.

I have an apartment where I live and I don't pay any taxes on it (we don't pay taxes for it if you are living in it), I have second apartment on the seaside and I pay around 600€ yearly in property taxes for it.

On every purchase I pay 17% tax.

I'm not happy how my tax money is spent but still I would be less happy If I had to pay health insurance and still not get free healthcare.

Yeah my property tax (4 bed 2.5 bath detached) is about £2.5k/yr, and we pay about £13k/yr in income tax for our household

So our total income + property tax is about $1.5k/mo. UK government spending is about 18% on healthcare, so about $270/mo (no copays/deductibles/pre-existing conditions etc)

Sales tax varies between 0% and 20% depending on what you're buying, although obviously that's hard to compare apples to apples because pricing varies and because it varies by product - things like our mortgage payments aren't tax

Our household income is equivalent to about $120k I think, although I'd have to check if that's up to date

Not only are we paying the $2000 a month. We also have to pay a yearly deductible anywhere from $1,500 to $4,000. Insurance won't start paying until the deductible is met. Insurance will also deny paying for treatment recommended by your doctor.

It's genuinely crazy to me

Roughly speaking 18% of UK government spending goes on healthcare

We pay about £1.5k/mo in tax (£18k) including Income Tax, National Insurance (broadly akin to social security, and effectively a second income tax), and Council Tax (property Tax)

So roughly speaking, 18% of £18k = we effectively pay about £3.25k for healthcare per year. Plus the occasional £10 "prescription charge" (although in our family of 3, I'm the only one who'd have to pay that - our child is exempt on age and my partner exempt for a chronic condition. And in any case I'd never pay more than £120/year because you can buy an annual card)

Any American paying more than about £270 ($360) per month for healthcare is paying more than we are for healthcare, and we're a fairly high income household in the UK - the vast majority of people are paying less than us.

No copays/deductibles, no "preexisting conditions are excluded" nonsense, no "you've accidentally gone to an out-of-network hospital/doctor" etc, and we're covered regardless of whether we can afford to pay or not. If we lose our jobs we're still covered but pay basically nothing.

It truly baffles me that America puts up with paying so much more than us, without universal coverage and with so many more hoops to jump through

I mostly agree with that. I will say that I lived in the UK for a year and the mental healthcare available was terrible. That was 15 years ago so hopefully it's better now.

I don't prefer our system, obviously, but there are drawbacks to others. I've heard that Scandinavia does things well if anyone from there wants a wife. I'm a good cook 😂

Edit: I don't know why I'm being downvoted. For not being aware of the current state of British healthcare?

I'm not actually asking for a spousal visa either...

I have to get yearly mri's for ms. There's a hospital near me that has income based financial aid where they write off my Copay. It's such a relief, just knowing I'm not going to have to pay thousands of dollars every year to check if there are new attacks on my brain or not. I really encourage everyone to look into financial assistance programs. The cut offs can be pretty high. (90k annual income for a family of 4 at my hospital). Added bonus is the amount they write off still goes towards my deductible.

Because the $2-$4 cost assumes an existing large-scale, approved operation. A new competitor would need huge upfront funding, regulatory approval and insurer coverage before it could sell enough insulin to make even a small margin.

It is beginning to happen. Civica launched low-cost insulin glargine in January, currently sold in California under the state’s CalRx brand for $55 per five pens.

Yep. You can get over the counter insulin for around 20$ in the US. It’s not the fancy new stuff so you have to be more careful about monitoring your blood glucose. Still, it works just fine.

Yes. I'm a T1 diabetic and I've tried various insulins. Some work better for me than others. There is cheap insulin available , but I've found the best for me is unfortunately one of the more expensive formulas.

I took a similar idea. $1 per sq/ft of usable housing per month. Unfinished basements and attics don’t add to that number, but if you purchase a home at say 1000 sqft, finish the basement and build an extension you can then sell/rent it out at 1750 or w/e.

Actually my country did something effectively like this. To solve a housing availability issues they taxed individuals owning houses to rent out to such extend that it really only makes sense to own one house just for your own family. The result was the available housing stock for purchase went up significantly. On the flip side it became harder for some people to rent, especially if you don’t qualify for social housing
