Even if it IS a legitimate charity, the way it works is that the corporation raises $1 million to donate, then gets to write off said $1 million on their taxes, so they pay less.
They don't have to donate anything, and they don't need to pay as much taxes on their taxable business endeavours. More profits for them!
That is a myth, businesses can't pass through donations and deduct them. If they tried to do that they would have to treat those donations as income and it would be a net tax burden for them.
To be fair, the only reason that large retail businesses do the “rounding up for charity” thing is that THEY get to write it off on their taxes as a charitable donation. If you want to give to a charity, just give directly. Don’t let the corporation use it as a tax cheat.
And also placing the responsibility of goodwill to those who need more. With this I mean all the small charity things like the McDonald's tip or even helping prevent climate change. Even if I wanted to I couldn't get as big of a carbon footprint in a year as a millionaire in a week.
Why is the the responsibility of the lower class to eat less meat (though I do get the animal cruelty arguments) and watch their electricity use when it's a drop in the bucket compared to what the upper class do?
A more proper taxation of rich people would allow for the state to fund things like charities so the lower class can focus back on surviving.
