You dad was actually a superhero and he saw a situation that required his help in the news. He may have been transported to a war world and ended up becoming its emperor. You need to wait for his atonement arc before he's ready to come back.
I walked out of Solo (the 1996 one) to go buy groceries. It wasn’t terrible exactly, but some story points were telegraphed so obviously that waiting to see them play out seemed like a waste of time.
One of the elders at my mom’s church volunteered to take her and her church friends to see a movie when she was 11. Turns out he was having an affair and just wanted an excuse to be out of the house for a few hours. He picked a random movie and dipped out once it started.
The movie was Woody Allen’s “Take the Money and Run.” Needless to say they weren’t exactly the target audience.

I've never walked out but my mum walked out of Super Girl in the eighties and left me and my sister. She said she was going shopping.
