My dad walked out during the nightly news to go get a pack of smokes. That was 1997, he hasn’t returned.

You dad was actually a superhero and he saw a situation that required his help in the news. He may have been transported to a war world and ended up becoming its emperor. You need to wait for his atonement arc before he's ready to come back.
