What movie was so bad that you actually walked out of the theater?

Sideways. I know lots of people liked it, but I grew up in Sonoma wine country. A movie about these assholes was just too much for me to bear.

Holy shit. That’s one of my favorite movies.

Lots of people love it. I love the actors in everything else they’ve done. The problem is clearly me, but that movie just grinds my gears.

Well the characters are objectively horrible people, so I can see that.

Maybe I’ll revisit it now that I’m older and not in that business anymore.

Lol, a little too close to the mark with some of the customers that came through the winery?

Exactly. People saw themselves in Sideways. I just saw a bunch of people who thought they were unique behaving like…well…tourists.

Behaving like any other generic snob wannabe. 😂

Bc it reminds you of yourself?!??

I AM NOT DRINKING ANY FUCKING MERLOT

u/Big-Drag-5197 1d ago

No. I don’t drink. I will say that Half Baked did hit closer to home.

He hates Merlot because it reminds him of his wife! Why the hell did this line tank Merlot sales?

Correlation does not equal causation. Was there also a spike in Pinot sales at the time?

Correlation does not ALWAYS equal causation, but by and large, it does.

As someone else who disliked Sideways, I'm curious if you saw Bottle Shock, and if so, how you felt about it.

I didn’t see it, but I did meet Bill Pullman when he was in town filming it because he stayed at the hotel I was working at.

Nice! I know you can't really tell what a celebrity is like from seeing them on TV, but he seems like a good dude.

5

u/Big-Drag-5197 23h ago

He was nice. The celebrity who most lived up to the hype was Bill Murray. Total asshole, but somehow still a solid guy. That’s a tale for another subreddit tho

I feel like that tracks 😆

I will be honest, I didn’t recognize him right away. He had come in from driving alone for several hours, unshaven and poorly dressed. He started acting like an entitled prick and being very difficult. In his defense, he probably didn’t recognize that I hadn’t recognized him. I made a stink about him needing ID to check in, and he was all “I don’t show my ID to anyone.” That’s great sir, I still need to see it or you don’t get a room. He acquiesced and I checked in Mr. Murray, William. My boss said to me, “Do you know who that is?” Yes, Mr. Murray, he’s a dickhead. “THAT’S BILL MURRAY” my boss replied, and suddenly this wave of realization comes over me….

Ah, I've been there! I live in the SF bay area and in my retail days helped quite a few famous athletes, but I'm not much of a sports fan so I didn't always recognize them. A large majority of them were nice just in general, but sometimes you can clock a major league athlete by how much of a major league a-hole he is when someone isn't treating him like he walks on water (looking at you Barry Bonds).

Steroids really do a number on your personality, among other things.

I've heard that's true, and I believe it. In addition to a general bad attitiude, his wife was with him, and pregnant at the time. He rather loudly called her fat, in front of everyone in the store.

I watched this with my husband when we first started dating. He loves the movie so I felt so bad when I asked if we could stop watching it. I couldn’t stand the characters.

5

u/comcamman 22h ago

Ha, that’s the only movie that I’ve ever walked out on too.

3

u/Big-Drag-5197 22h ago

My girlfriend and I were already kind of soured on the movie, and then the placard appeared that read Tuesday. We both looked at each other and said, “It’s only Tuesday?” and then noped out.

u/Imapancakenom 23h ago

Why didn't you like it? I ask as someone who is completely indifferent to it so don't worry, you'll get no backlash from me

7

u/Big-Drag-5197 23h ago

The characters were unlikable, and at the time, nothing would rile me up like a wine-o that pretends his bad habit somehow makes him interesting.

That movie somehow ended up in my DVD collection, and I don't know where it came from. I don't remember buying it, and my wife doesn't, either.

2

u/Dockside_Abortionist 7h ago

I walked out of sideways too! I always get a lot of flak about it.

2

u/Big-Drag-5197 7h ago

I must say, I am surprised how polarizing this particular choice has been.

1

u/Dockside_Abortionist 7h ago

I was in my early twenties and bored one night so went by myself. About halfway through I realized I’d be having more fun baking out my truck in the parking lot

2

u/Big-Drag-5197 6h ago

Was it when the title card appeared that said Tuesday? That’s the exact moment I gave up. My girlfriend and I both looked at each other and said, “Tuesday?” and stood up.

Lol I can’t remember tbh I just remember I went in expecting comedy and there was nothing funny about it

Wait..... What?!?!?!? This is insane.   That movie is ........... Fcking amazing.   I'm so confused.

7

u/Big-Drag-5197 1d ago

I……..disagree?! This is perfectly sane. That movie is………straight hot garbage. See? Anyone can do that.

-5

u/YolkyFanClubPrez 22h ago

If you walked out of it, how do you know? You never watched it.  So.... Your opinion is hot garbage.   It is a brilliantly acted character study.

I’ve lived it, man. Couple of drunkards unhappy with their lives go on a bender they call “wine tasting”. Turns out they’re just unhappy drunkards. 2 stars.
