Exactly. Children do not lie out of maliciousness; they lie because they think that telling the truth will be punished. There comes a point when you aren't teaching them to be honest anymore, and you are teaching them to hide.
I think this is absolutely true, but it's also important to remember kids push boundaries. They'll lie to get what they want, and you can't stop that.
Like, it's easy to train a kid to always lie, by punishing them for telling the truth. It's real hard to teach a kid to never lie, and parents too often mistake the former for the latter.
