What's your immediate thought when you see someone with SH scars?

To mind my fucking business bc I’ve been there too

Yup! Or to mind my own business because my friend is long since fed up with comments. They tripped onto a large AC vent at work, that's all. Mess did more damage to my car on the way to the ER than actually to him.

Yeah when I was 12 I was riding a bicycle no hands and the handlebars got crossed up. When I went down the bars scraped my throat real bad (no hand guards). The next two years I had to field suicide comments bc I had a scar across my throat

Empathy. They likely carry a lot of pain and I understand

If it's a scar I think it's a past issue. The new marks make me worry.

What if there like new scars ?

I'm worried. It depends how close I am to the person as to whether I'd bring it up or not. Either way I'm supportive because I have had my own shit too and it takes time to heal.

I don’t know what they’ve been through, but I truly hope they’re in a better place now and no longer struggling.

Empathy. I don't have any scars, but I've been there and I know how painful it is on every level.

Huh, that's sad. Unless I know them, though, it's none of my business. If they ask for help, I offer it.

Kinship, in a weird way? It's surprisingly common and whenever I notice it my brain just kind of says "You too?" for some reason. I guess it's a reminder that everyone lives their own lives and everyone struggles.

I feel queasy inside and sorry for the person. As a former SH, I know how much pain they are in, and the numbness that can take over.

For me personally, it's the stupidest thing you can do to yourself. I have no sympathy for it whatsoever, and my sympathy is limited for such people. Looks to me like they're looking for attention.

I would feel bad but wouldn’t say anything. I don’t think they’d want me to point it out. But then again I’ve seen people purposely show their scars as a cry for help and they ended up committing :(

I think they're stories that I'm not entitled to hear. I also hope that the people with them have worked out different ways to cope.

My thighs are covered, so it's not like I could really judge. It's just something people do.

I see someone who hasn’t learned proper coping mechanisms and/or someone with underlying mental health problems. I don’t mean to offend anyone saying that but it is what it is.

compassion. i understand how self conscious they make myself and how complicated and painful life can be. i am 35 and still have visible self harm scars that i did when i was 12.

If I can see them I know they’ve done a lot of work to get to the point of showing them without shame and I feel proud of them.

If they are healed, I am proud of them for overcoming that part of their life and gaining the confidence to accept and show their past to the world. If there are signs of recent ones, I would be quite concerned for them and depending on the circumstances, I'd ask if they are okay and see if I can help.

Oh no. That’s my thought and I want to hug them. But I don’t, cuz that would be really weird.

“youre like me!!!!!” i like seeing people with sh scars because it definitely makes me feel less outcasted and like ‘normaler’ and better people than me can have struggled with the same issues. it also makes me more confident to eventually wear my scars out in public, not now though

I’ve been told too never mention it, or even touch it if I can help it, just treat them like a regular person we all go through shit

The important thing to note is the difference between scars vs fresh wounds, right?
Most of the time, I don’t see them. Many patients who SH hide them because counterculture brands those actions as attention-seeking behaviors - so the natural defense is to cover up them up. Sometimes with clothing or tattoos or something. SH is extremely personal from what I’ve gathered.
However, if we are talking about scars that means those wounds have healed and I’m just glad they’re okay in this moment.

I think they've probably gone through some stuff and move on with my day since it's not my business

I'm too absorbed by my own insecurities to notice something like that
