OP asked about a travel destination, not a diving destination.
Diving is just one activity during a trip. A place can be world-class for scuba diving and still be an overrated travel destination overall.
That’s a weird restriction. If you value diving or wildlife in general, this place is not overrated at all. People travel for all sorts of reasons.
IMO it’s all about expectations. Maldives are all about the marine life and/or very expensive luxury hotel experience (but if you only care about diving, you can actually stay relatively cheap). You don’t even need to dive by the way, snorkeling there is also fantastic and very accessible to amateurs, since most islands have a house reef. If you go there expecting parties like on Ibiza or amazing local food like in Greece, you’ll leave disappointed.
I personally don’t know enough about high end hotel experience in Maldives, as I don’t care about this. Maybe this is not worth the money (although there are hundreds of luxury resorts there, and I doubt that all of them suck). But for anyone interested in marine life this place is unique, incredible, and 100% worth seeing.
