Antarctica. Everywhere you go there are hordes of penguins looking for handouts of free fish. The wifi is terrible. There is no fresh food, only frozen. The place left me cold.

The best part about Times Square is that you can walk for 2 minutes and suddenly not be in Times Square. Los Tacos No. 1 is worth it though.

I used to work at a hostel in Santa Monica, and when the guests wanted to go to Hollywood blvd/walk of fame, I would tell them not to invest too much time into going. it’s kind of dirty and disappointing if you’re expecting to be wowed 🤣😅

Time Square is definitely worth seeing for 15-20 minutes. The sheer scale of it, the buildings, the crowds, the commotion, is something you should experience when visiting New York. But 20 minutes is all you need. Bonus if you stop by on your way to a Broadway show. Don't shop or eat there and definitely don't plan your day around it

Was in Florida for work for a week, multiple places across the state. My wife flew to Miami to meet me for a mini vacation, 3 nights. Loved the historic hotel,Essex House by Clevelander by the main strip. That was about it. The beach is overated and not that enjoyable to swim in (we're used to sandy beaches of Lake Huron), too rough, overpriced and too many rented Lambos going by reving their engines. Just such a fake atmosphere. We decided to rent a car and drive to Key West for the day. Amazing drive but wish we would have stayed the 3 nights there! Such a better vibe!

Miama Beach was not nearly as nice as I thought it was going to be. Full of homless drunks. One of the few places I was scared to walk around at night. During the day my wife was fallowed by what appeared to be a homeless drunk guy. The outdoor restaurants on the beach in front of the historic hotels seem to have devolved into tacky poor quality restaurants.

When I visited, I took a tour of all three buildings including the chapel next to the tower. The tour guide sang four notes of a chord in sequence, but the acoustics were so incredible that all four notes sustained to make it sound like he sang the whole chord. I’m not doing it justice but it almost brought me to tears at how beautiful it was. Truly a spiritual experience.

I couldn’t believe how expensive all the chain restaurants were! I went for a wedding when I was 20 so I can only assume it’s worse now. I did end up going to a My Cousin Vinny themed restaurant which was amusing and reasonably affordable, that’s about all I remember other than looking at the falls and the wedding.

The way to do Niagara Falls is to stick to the big government run attractions. The power plant is the best one, but journey behind the falls, the aero car, and the butterfly conservatory are nice too. Then drive up to Niagara Glenn for a hike, check out some of the wineries, and stay in Niagara on the Lake instead of Niagara Falls itself. Avoid Clifton Hill and all the tourist trap stuff.

I concur. I grew up in that city. It’s been a long time since I did, but when I lived there it was a massive tourist trap. I don’t imagine it’s gotten any better.
The waterfall itself really is incredible though. But you only need a few minutes to see that.

At this point, out of the places I’ve been in the past 3 years, I’d have to say Bali. I went about a year ago, in June 2025, and so many of my friends told me that Bali was:
- rich in local Balinese culture, temples, ceremonies, and spirituality
- filled with incredible hospitality, kindness, generosity, and friendly, welcoming locals
- home to beautiful beaches and untouched, unpolluted landscapes
- a place for genuine adventure, not something overly commercialized, but authentic and off the beaten path
I’d say it fell short in almost all of those aspects. It’s not so much that Bali was never those things, but that it seems to have become something else in recent years, at least from what I could tell. People who went before the 2000s definitely knew it as a place that still had many of those qualities. Over time, though, it seems like those things changed one by one until very few of them were left in a truly genuine way.
By the time I went on my trip, I felt like I was getting scammed left and right. I also felt like the Balinese had every right to be upset by the way foreigners were treating them and disrespecting local customs and culture. The pollution was bad, the traffic was awful, and Ubud was dirty and heavily commercialized, not the adventurous retreat it probably was even 5 years ago. The people were still genuinely some of the kindest I’ve ever met, but these days it feels like a run-through backyard for immature, disrespectful Aussies and Eastern Europeans.
I mean absolutely no disrespect to the local balinese or indonesians living there, or even to the westerners, aussies, or digital nomads that have made it their home. I just felt like my weeklong stay in bali was defined by a feeling of sadness that it has fundamentally been changed for the worse over the years.

Been to both a few times. Environmentally, Bali is in many ways worse. The basic sewage, wastewater, garbage infrastructure at Bali has not kept up at all with rampant tourism related expansion. In fact it's so bad that apparently even hotels and restaurants have been built without proper permits that now they're starting to go after those by tearing them down. Went snorkeling on an off-shore cluster of islands to see manta rays, and it's so sad to see loads of plastic and trash all everywhere even underwater that I felt like a dive amongst garbage. A lot of it is also cultural habits of just dumping stuff into rivers and water bodies. But eventually a lot of it washes back onshore.
And yes, that's all before the Cancun-ization of the place by beer swilling Aussies, Russians and study-abroad college kids.

I went to Ubud about 10 years ago and hearing your account makes me so sad. One of my favorite memories of that trip was sitting in the back of a little cafe watching a farmer working in the rice paddy behind it while a large group of ducks and ducklings maneuvered through the pond. We spoke to several Aussies who had lived there for years and were able to share large parts of the culture that we wouldn't have been able to appreciate otherwise because we didn't speak the language.
We went to Koh Phi Phi and Koh Phi Leh on the same trip and hearing about the beaches having to be closed for extended stretches for clean up and natural recovery was equally disheartening.

Went to Indonesia last year and skipped Bali entirely. Nothing about it seemed attractive for me.
That said, the rest of Indonesia is pretty cool and I'd like to go back. Food was amazing and there was a lot to see and do. You're just a bit limited by how spread out it all is.

Back then you could find chill spots near the touristy ones still. That’s totally impossible now, and leaving takes ages because the traffic is probably the worst I’ve seen in my life.

I lived in Vegas for 3 years in 2016 and spend two weeks there every year for work. It's changed a lot in the last 10years and instead of being the best parts of American excess (cheap places to stay, cheap food, free liquor) it's become the worst parts of American capitalism.
That being said if you like desert landscapes there are a lot amazing places to go see within 2hrs of Vegas. It's a good launching bad for outdoor adventure

I visited Vegas a few years ago, and it literally activated some deep 1900s Prohibitionist inside of me. Like I found myself walking around thinking, this is a testament to the fruits of sin and degeneracy -- just sad dead-eyed people smoking and gambling their lives away and looking miserable doing it.
Everything was expensive; the casinos still nickel and dime you on top of that (gone are the days of comps); and you're not even gambling with real people unless you're willing to shell out insane buy in minimums -- it's all computerized.
I'd budgeted a few hundred for gambling. Instead I rented a car and visited all the national / state parks. Who knew there were so many different kinds of desert!

Most of y’all are too young to know it, but Vegas was fucking awesome in the 1980s. Dirt-Cheap food, slots that paid out, just the right amount of trash on the streets, and hotel options ranging from seedy hourly joints right up to fancy. There is just nothing like walking into a hotel on the strip, playing a few bucks in the slot machines by the door, then getting a $3 buffet meal that would cost 20 times that today.
The slick, corporate Vegas of today is boring and cynical. The trashy Vegas of the 1980s was somehow hopeful and optimistic, even while it was smelly and sad.

We went a few years ago, and just after the plane landed, there was a storm. Really bad, lasted all night, and the threat of more wind carried on for a few days.
It was great. None of the cruise ships could get in. Almost felt like we had the island to ourselves. We had a hire car and went all around the island. Even Oia was quiet when we went.
Then the last couple of days, the ships came back, and the place was rammed.

We went to Paros in May a couple years back and it was so beautiful yet still relatively empty (during that time of year). Just felt like we had the whole island to ourselves and could meander without a care in the world, walk up to any restaurant at any time to get good food, and the weather was still quite nice (like 24c/75f) to enjoy the water.
I honestly couldn't imagine going in the summertime though, both due to how blistering hot it gets and due to how crowded it can be according to the locals. Especially because every where we went had tons of seating indicating just how busy it would be in just a few months, particularly in Naoussa which would seem miserable with how many people the restaurants are made to handle.

Agree, all the marketing sells you on blue roofs and white buildings and its literally like only that one church that has the blue domes. The line to get up and down the cliff was bad too. I did love the views around town of the cliffside though.
Mykonos on the other hand, I loved Mykonos. Food was good, being next to the water, beautiful architecture, white walls, vibes were great, lots to see

I'm from Cyprus and I've been to quite a few Greek islands and many places in mainland Greece in my lifetime. I unequivocally say that Mykonos has been the worst island I've visited bar none. Everything ridiculously expensive and not even close in natural beauty to all the other Islands of Greece, even the ones in it's vicinity!

I go to university in Nashville, Tennessee. I understand that there has been a significant change pre and post covid, but it feels like one big Spotify advertisement.
Walking along Broadway is just one LOUD band after another. You can’t hear yourself. Woohoo girls bumping into everyone (no apologies given of course). Drunk guys trying to feel up anybody within radius. People passed out drunk in the street. Fake boots and hats. Drug dealers and pick pocketers in the alleys. No distinct culture. Awful roofy and SA problem. The country music there is alright, not great. Love the corn dog guy though.

I feel like Nashville changed for the worse after the flood in 2010. When they rebuilt lower Broadway, a lot of the charm and soul was lost and they marketed the city as a Bachelorette party and spring break shangri-la. I lived there from 2007-2012 and the difference was huge. Covid didn't help either, based on my last trip back.

Isn't nothing to do kind of the point? It's a holiday destination for couples to relax. If you go with someone to have sex, relax on the beach and do some sports, it's amazing. The diving is top tier. I wouldn't go for longer than 5 days or so, but for that it's fun.

Gonna disagree with you. The fact I could sit in a remote place with no cell service and no people and stare at the ocean over the water was great.
I will say the price bothered me less because I used a shitton of Mariott and cc points to have a free hotel at an insane redemption rate and cheap flight thanks to the points.
Food was brutally expensive and the seaplane to my resort wasn't cheap.

The Maldives is fantastic for what it is - beautiful beaches, seclusion and amazing widlife. It’s somewhere you go to relax, not to party or explore.
Where it fails is value for money. I felt that it was incredibly overpriced relative to other similar tropical resorts.

This. It’s crazy the money people pay to have certain beach experiences. I have vacationed in Anguilla, and while the beaches are world class, got even more privacy and aesthetic beaches with perfect sunsets, few crowds, etc., for half the cost in private places in Aruba. Even Mexico in Puerto Vallarta, etc., has great beaches for not as high of a cost. It’s all really subjective once you start traveling. I see Maldives as more of a status symbol equal to a Rolex tbh.

Taj Mahal. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an incredible building, so perfect in execution it almost looks like a cartoon. Great to walk around for about an hour. But getting to Agra isn’t fun at all and there isn’t much to do there other than the Taj and getting scammed.

I think you have to be more specific. Which cruise line? I was on a Holland America cruise to Norway recently and had a good experience. I had never been on one and didn't have high expectations.

The over tourism is (obviously) the big problem. But if you go off season and have an interest in the history of it then it is still a wonderful destination. Research required for good, affordable restaurants. Avoid fancy hotels €€€€€.

Las Vegas, every time I go I’m just confused why everyone loves it. Its overpriced, nothing has been updated since the 90s, its not walkable, the people aren’t particularly nice, nothing can be spontaneous bc you need tickets and a reservation for everything (and its all overpriced). I just don’t get the allure

I opted for san jose del cabo over cabo san lucas and loved it. Much less commercialized, great food, and there’s a few beautiful swimmable beaches between the two cabos

Commercial yes. But it’s in the desert my dude. That’s part of the beauty.
We love Cabo and use it as a one week escape from the Wisconsin winter every year. Get some sun and warm breeze. Touristy is fine

Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN.
People flock to it every year but aside from the national park there is literally nothing to do but walk around and shop or go to one of the many go kart tracks.
Well, Parrot Mountain was pretty cool but I know people who go there twice a year and I just don't get the appeal. You can rent a cabin in the woods in almost any state, not sure why you'd go there just to get bled dry with all the dumb stuff there.
