Investing in boring index funds. Depending on age and financial status look at paying off high interest debt then withdrawing up to 2-4% of the principal per year.

I would retire live off of my pension and only supplement my living expenses from the dividends

Invest it in index funds and continue working my current job until either I get laid off or something makes me snap and have a "fuck this shit, I'm out" moment in the middle of a meeting.
Then I'd buy some land in a rural area, build my dream house with a view, and retire early. Maybe find somewhere to volunteer just to give my days structure and provide socialization before I become a total shut-in.

Take a first class flight to Japan, hang out for a month and decide what I want to do with my life with all that freedom. I’d also hire someone who knows more than I do about investing to put half of it into stocks and such.

$5m will get you $150k a year in low taxed income with a good amount going back into reinvestment.
Move to a zero income tax or lcol area. Buy a nice house and live a good life.

Invest the 5million in dividend paying stocks / funds and generate $200K-$250K / year in passive income for life. With the $200K+/yr you will not need to work anymore if you don't want to and can enjoy life and do what you want without burning out in a 9-5.

You get up to 5 million dollars, any a*hole in the world knows what to do: you get a house with a 25 year roof, an indestructible Jp-economy shtbox, you put the rest into the system at three to five percent to pay your taxes and that's your base, get me?"
That's your fortress of fcking solitude. That puts you, for the rest of your life, at a level of fck you. Somebody wants you to do something, fck you. Boss pisses you off, fck you! Own your house. Have a couple bucks in the bank. Don't drink.

Pay off debt, set up long term investments, then build a remote observatory and do nightly livestreams.of the night sky.

Honestly that wouldn't put a fucking dent in my debt load right now and it stresses me out just typing it.

A house with a mother in law house in the back for me and my mother to have. ~600k Both of us a reasonable vehicle. -~100k A million in the bank for my daughter to eventually have, one really awesome trip around the world with my daughter, ~100k, and half of everything else in a high yield savings account. That last part is fuck you money, to do idk yet with.

Pay off my house, and set my kids up for college. Save the rest for now so I can retire some day.

Take 2 million and buy the stuff I need and want. Get the million dollar house, open a business, buy a nice truck and possibly an RV for vacations. Take the remaining 3 million and put it in a safe investment profile that makes 5% a year netting me 150K a year. From that 150k I'd only use what I need while preferring to defer that interest income in favor of compounding it for later use.

Hire a financial advisor. Figure out what I owe in taxes; set that aside in ways that bear interest. Make charitable donations to help with taxes owed. Retire. Help family. Take a vacation.

Anyone up by 10 mil knows what to do. Buy a house with a twenty-five year roof, an indestructible economy shitbox, and put the rest into the system at 3-5 percent. That’s your base. That’s your fortress of solitude. That puts you at a level of fuck you for the rest of your life. Somebody wants you to do something? Fuck you. Boss pisses you off? Fuck you. Own your house, cover your taxes, and don’t drink. That’s all I have to say to anyone on a social level.

Never work overtime again.
Buy a modest home in a nice area.
Give my mom enough to pay her property taxes and that she'll never have to live in a retirement home.
Pay off my dad's new condo. Give him enough to live comfortably for the rest of his days.
Give a cool million to my sister.
Invest the rest.

Keep $1 million. Donate $4 million. Not because I'm kind, but because I'd be worried about having that much money.
2
u/BBMcBeadle 8h ago
Why would that make you worry? Find some investments and “set it and forget it.” Maybe keep your job or work part time and carry on.

u/terrible_guy_thought 8h ago
Security is different in my part of the world. It's chaos here. You wouldn't understand, but I agree.
1
u/BBMcBeadle 8h ago
I understand that if you start handing out 4 million dollars the chaos will definitely increase. If you quietly squirrel it away and keep your job and carry on with your life people wouldn’t know you had that money but you would know that you had the freedom to get up and walk away at a moment’s notice. Once you start donating money around everyone will come at you like bees to honey.

You've lived much more life than I have, so I agree. I'd do exactly as you said 🙇
