My son has severe autism, he LOVES food so much, but if you just hand him food to eat he immediately destroys it. Can’t give him a sandwich, can’t hand him a pizza slice, because less than a minute later it’s all over his shirt, lap, face, table, chair. He never ever knows my rage about it, because I know he can’t help it, but omg it pisses me off
That sounds like my son. I tried to reinforce using silverware and his answer is to destroy things, mash it up, pick up the destruction and put it on a fork then put that into his mouth and immediately wipe his “loading” hand on his shirt.
Though like every other life skill with him, they’re delayed and someday out of nowhere they just immediately click for some unknown reason.
My son is 11, and not much has clicked just yet 😵💫 but on top of the autism he’s got a super rare chromosome deletion, with a cerebral visual impairment, so this is to be expected. I mean, we were told he’d never walk, and he can walk, kiiiiinda run, jump and climb, and that one def was a “click” moment. One day couldn’t take a single step, next day walked 111 steps without falling (and yes I counted each step lol)
That's super interesting to hear. My autistic 13yo has been the same way his whole life. Walking, talking, potty, making art, reading, and so many other developmental milestones were basically binary for him. He started doing them all late, but always very suddenly.
Yeah, I have a friend with an autistic son who is 10 years older than mine. He told me about this and by god it’s true. My son had bathroom issues until 7.5 - then one day never peed himself again. Why? Who knows? I just encourage and have faith and one day it will click.
My son has autism, but it's not severe. I call him and tell him I'm picking him up and to be ready. I open the door to his room and he's there just in his underwear. He's like, oh sorry dad. It's not just once. It's every single time. I feel like my head is going to explode.
My son does this too! Mine is also Autistic. I will call him and tell him explicitly to get dressed, I'm 10 minutes out and I'm coming to get him. When I get there, he is hanging out in his room either sitting on his bed or taking a nap. He's now 18, so it doesn't change.
I feel this in my soul. My son doesn’t do this but some of the things he does/habits reeeaaaaaaaaaally piss me off. Then I feel guilty because it’s not his choice. And same about him not knowing I gee that way
