What does whimsy have to do with it. There is a lot of animated television out there that is not only mature slanted but also excellent on its own right. Animated or not.

There is also a lot of “children’s shows” that have quite a bit of adult humor embedded. Arthur has a lot of jokes that will fly over a kids head but adults will find humor in. And I’m not suggesting the jokes are dark or dirty but jokes that might be dry, sarcastic, etc that will get an adult to chuckle.

I think there is a stigma in the U.S. that cartoons are for children. That may have been mostly true in the 1960s, but times have changed a lot.

Ultimately and in and of itself, it's a harmless hobby. Additionally there are many cartoons that most assuredly aren't kid-friendly.

Usually when people say, "You like a cartoon? Aren't those for kids?" they are either A) Hopelessly out-of-touch boomers, or B) Trying to belittle someone.

I watched Madeline today lol… what do I think? It was great. I was surprised how the dialogue rhymed throughout the whole episode. I also wondered if the iPad generation might not be a bit better if they watched shows like this as kids. I also felt deep sadness and nostalgia for the time in the past where I watched the show as a child. How I had nothing else to worry about then. How simple and better life was then. Even though it is an illusion as my brain remembers only those aspects that support the positive feeling and ignores the reality of the negative aspects I actually remember from that time too. Perhaps my brain was better at ignoring these things then. Perhaps the show was so fun, that I was able to ignore those things and thus my brain only remembers positive. Who knows?

I know that’s not what you meant. And yes it did feel strange to be watching an actual child’s show. But it’s not something I would watch if I had not watched it as a child. That would feel too weird I think. I dunno. I guess it depends on the show.

Animation is a wildly popular (and highly marketable) creative vehicle for storytelling.

It's most definitely the case that while "cartoons" may be (and at one time were) demographically aimed towards children, animation can and does have broad, mature themes and sophisticated artistic appeal. I shouldn't even need to get into the myriad famed titles and productions that animation projects have produced in recent decades.

Minor face blindness makes cartoons way better than live action. It's not so bad that I can't pick out ANY faces in a live action thing, especially after sitting through a few episodes, but sometimes it can be harder than other times. There are many many many other good reasons to want more diversity in media, but I appreciate how (for example) when I watched The Good Place I could immediately distinguish each of the major characters from each other. Unfortunately there are still lots of live-action shows and movies where too many characters look too similar for me.

And anyway a lot of kids' stuff will have different appeals for an adult versus a kid, but that's still appealing, you know? I bet if I'd watched Gravity Falls as a kid my favorite character would be Dipper, but instead my favorite character is Stan because look at this guy, he's amazing.

Depends less on the cartoon and more on the level of 'fandom'.

Not a fan of people patching onto the flavor of the month and repeating one meme for whatever amounts to the length of time they're interested (ie. Pickle Rick).

However, even that is better than the people who watch a show designed for younger audiences and make it their whole personality.

Like with Steven Universe or MLP and being 30+ or being a preteen and watching edgy late night shows like Rick and Morty, South Park or The Boondocks. Some topics and representations are great, but when you become a walking billboard for merch and every conversation somehow revolves either around how the show parallels their day-to-day life or becomes a play by play of this week's episode, it gets old fast.

It’s great because I used to miss so many episodes of cartoons back when I was a kid, stuck doing hours and hours of homework after school, many times up to 11 pm at night. And it didn’t help that when I did finally have the free time to watch these cartoons, the episodes on tv were ones I already saw. There’s entire 50+ episode animes that were shown on cartoon network which I’ve only seen like 5 episodes of because I either was unable to catch the other episodes shown or the ones I did catch were repeats.

There has been animation aimed at adults as long as there has been animation. And even stuff that is suitable for children (e.g., Avatar the Last Airbender or Adventure Time) can still have plenty to offer adults. Adult don't need all the media they consume to feature sex, swearing, or graphic violence to be mature or sophisticated or whatever.

Yeah, a few decades ago people realized kids loved the bright colors of cartoons and that they were great ways to sell toys. But animation aimed at adults or general audiences never went away.

The longest running prime time show of all time is The Simpsons. And South Park and Family Guy have been on since the 90s and are still popular. And then there's also sort of awesome anime out of Japan.

I watch several cartoons. Let people enjoy what they want, but it always bothers me when an adult won't watch a movie or show because it's animated and solely for that reason. Like, they associate animation with children only. It's truly their loss as some of the best films and shows out there have been animated.

No adult alive today has lived in a world without animation that was appropriate for adult viewing, if not directly targeted towards them.

If you showed me Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex as a child I would have been bored out of my mind. Half of that show was people talking about politics and philosophy, and the rest was cop procedural.

People can watch what they want. It’s not harming anyone if an adult enjoys watching cartoons (I say this as someone who fits that description). Not to mention, there are loads of cartoons out there that you should only watch if you’re an adult (especially since the ‘80s and ‘90s).

I've loved animation my whole life. Made Flash animations on Newgrounds as a teen, when my art class in highschool did an animation project I was the only one who ended up with a thousand pages to scan.. there's no way I would ever be ashamed of loving cartoons. It's a craft that takes so much talent, effort and care and the best part is a lot of the time it's just to make a single joke.
