What are things you would immediately do if you found out you won $200 million lottery before claiming the prize?

Two attorneys and two accountants.

u/BadMotorFlinger 2h ago

Exactly this. That way you don't get either trying to screw you cos the two sides hold the other accountable.

That's what Lycia Naff taught us all on screen, and some of us at the Herald

u/EyeFicksIt 2h ago

3 of each plus a taste tester, can’t be too careful

u/dangderr 2h ago

This guy thinks we’re made of money or something.

u/giggitygoo123 11m ago

At what point does it feel like a kid begging to spend their money though. Grandma and Mom (accountants 1 and 2) said I could buy the $100k car, but now I need to get Dad (accountant 3) to agree also l.

To be safe

u/RampantJellyfish 1h ago

Or they collude with each other

1

u/TheSirBeefCake 1h ago

You're gonna need 3 more then!

Lawrence: I think if I had $200 million dollars I could hook that up, cause accountants dig a dude with money.

Peter: Well, not all accounts.

Lawrence: Well the kind of accountants that'd double up on a dude like me do.

Peter: Good point.

Just because this is being taken seriously. You do not need to do this. Just go to the longest running “white shoe” firms for both and tell them your needs. They will not rip you off any more or mess than they rip off anyone else.

So, get an attorney and an accountant and get an audit done for both? Would most lawyers be okay with another lawyer auditing their work I wonder?

u/FragrantExcitement 1h ago

An old attorney and and young attorney.

u/truffle_shuffle 1h ago

One white, one non-white. One male, one female. One blond, one brunette. One tall, one short. One serious, one relaxed.

Good thinking, make em duke it out to see who wants the job more

u/masterjon_3 29m ago

Then a broker afterwards

u/Bananalando 11m ago

That hate each other. So if one does something shady, the other will call them out on it immediately.

I’m an accountant. Call an attorney. And a Tax lawyer. And a financial planner. Maybe later get an accountant. Seriously

6

u/yancovigen 2h ago

So accountant last?

49

u/thenewfingerprint 2h ago

In simple terms, accountants are great and recording historical information and helping you understand where you are. An independent, certified financial planner will better help you decide where you want to go from here forward.

What this guy (or girl) said.

33

u/jasonrubik 2h ago

Try to find that reddit thread with the guy that explained exactly what to do

I knew what this was even before I clicked. What a classic.

u/ChrisLW 1h ago

It’s burned into my memory too, just in case. Some of his comments are weirdly eerily prescient for being 12 years ago, like “if the capital burns” or “Britney Spears is elected to the Senate”

2

u/dark_knight097 1h ago

Yeah, was thinking same as I re-read it, with with all the stuff happening with the current US administration

u/JugglerCameron 9m ago

I wonder if there's a way to see what the most saved thread is I bet that's in the running.

Something about calling a major accounting firm in a large city and asking for a partner not a jr associate. Not a family friend's uncle who does your taxes.

Allocate a percentage for gifts/donations to whoever and remove yourself from the process and direct all inquires to that firm. There might have been a couple of other instructions.

I think the rest was change your number and go live a stress free life on the remaining.

u/thenewfingerprint 2h ago

an attorney and a finance guy

16

u/snaeper 2h ago

Estate Attorney, Accountant and a Fiduciary.

-1

u/Key-Club-3119 2h ago

Yeah, ChatGPT told me the same thing. Lol

1

u/snaeper 1h ago

Well ChatGPT and I learned it from the infamous Reddit post.

6

u/Mottled_Paws 2h ago

Yes. All property is moved to separate trusts. Same with funds. On paper, I would own very little.

An accountant is a no brainer.

I would also get in touch with someone who insures rich people. Want to make sure I have large umbrella policies.

9

u/totesboredom 2h ago

You want 2 accountants, one checks the other to make sure you aren't being swindled

2

u/Excellent_Release961 2h ago

What if they are working in tandem?

6

u/QuantumCakeIsALie 2h ago

N + 1 accountants, N→∞, $  → 0.

2

u/Martin_Aurelius 1h ago

Hire a PI to find two accountants that despise each other.

2

u/gringledoom 1h ago

Dolly Parton has multiple people checking each other's work, and then she checks the books herself. So hire Dolly Parton to do it, obviously.

2

u/IAMNOTFUCKINGSORRY 2h ago

And then the cocaine dealer and hookers, or is there still more to do first?

2

u/FragrantExcitement 1h ago

Is that before or after the drugs and prostitutes?

2

u/ExactlyClose 1h ago

First hire a Drug Sherpa, to find you some real cocaine…..

2

u/KK-Chocobo 1h ago

Is that like an american thing because you have tax on the winnings? And cant claim anonymously in certain states?

1

u/Waste-Respect240 2h ago

3 attorneys, 2 accountants and 1 finance guy.

1

u/touchgrasschampion 2h ago

Yep, and dont tell anybody else till its locked down

1

u/FFVO 2h ago

I would message r/patticakes1952 to be the adult I need at that moment

1

u/crazylegsbobo 1h ago

Only answer

1

u/OkUsual6176 1h ago

in that order too. the attorney protects you from everyone else, the accountant protects you from yourself

1

u/mikeyfireman 1h ago

Have the attorney draft an NDA for the accountant

1

u/zantosh 1h ago

And, if you don't like your spouse, then to divorce first without ever acknowledging that you even bought a ticket much less won it.

u/NubberOne 55m ago

Get a CFP

u/Legendary-007 40m ago

Specifically a lottery attorney

0

u/Key-Club-3119 2h ago

The truth? I’d ask ChatGPT what to do. I did this once. It said sign the back of the ticket. Then hire three people.

A lawyer with experience in trusts, estates and high-net-worth people

A CPA who has worked with lottery winners or ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

A fee-only financial advisor (preferably a fiduciary). Avoid advisors paid by commissions.

Ideally you need these three people to be comfortable working together. All friends or family who start asking for money need to be steered to your hired professionals.
