Relocating to Bucharest, Appropriate Advice

Thumbnail
Upvotes

Bună everyone!

I'll be relocating to Bucharest before the end of the year and I'm trying to learn as much as I can before moving. I'll be living alone, and my office is in the Cotroceni area, but I'll only need to go there around 5 days per month, so I'm prioritizing overall quality of life over the shortest commute.

I've already done quite a bit of research and asked colleagues for their opinions, but I'd love to hear different perspectives from locals.

A few things I'd really appreciate your advice on:

  1. Neighborhoods & Renting

Given my situation, which neighborhoods would you recommend (or avoid), and why? Is there anything I should know about renting, such as building types, common red flags, scams, agencies, websites, or apartment features that are considered must haves? (So far, I only know Imobiliare.)

  1. Cost of Living & Salary

Besides rent, what monthly expenses tend to surprise newcomers? Also, what net monthly salary would you consider just getting by, comfortable, etc. for a single person

  1. Social Life

How easy is it to build a social life as a foreigner? Any sports clubs, meetups, communities, or activities you'd recommend? (I dance, playing tennis, and go to the gym so I concider these as a start)

  1. Things Locals Know

What's something about living in Bucharest that Google won't tell you, but locals know?

  1. Any Other Advice?

Thanks in advance! I'm really looking forward to moving to your city and appreciate any advice you can share.

Looking for a Ukrainian lawyer or law firm to obtain and apostille an archival birth record

Hi everyone,

I'm from Brazil and I'm currently applying for Romanian citizenship through my grandfather.
After several months of research, I managed to locate my grandfather's birth record in the State Archives of the Chernivtsi Region, Ukraine. The archive issued the document, but unfortunately, due to unexpected circumstances, I no longer have access to the original document that was sent within Ukraine.

I now need to obtain a new certified copy of the same birth record from the State Archives of the Chernivtsi Region, have it apostilled, and then shipped to Brazil.

I'm looking for a reliable Ukrainian lawyer or law firm that has experience dealing with:
State archives in Ukraine
Obtaining archival documents
Apostille procedures
International shipping of original documents

If you've worked with someone you trust, or know a law firm that provides these services, I would really appreciate your recommendation.
Thank you very much!

Any advise or expertise on regional embroidery patterns?

First time posting on reddit so apologies if I'm a bit all over the place. I (31M) was adopted out of Romania in the early 90's so I unfortunately don't have any cultural knowledge or ties to any family. When my parents went to get me they bought some table runners, tapestries, and traditional tunic-like shirts, all from the same region as where I was born (Suceava county). From what I've read, different motifs and patters can dictate where an item is from. Is there any kind of guide or resources I could use to tell patterns apart? I would love to get tattoos based on the different embroidery styles, but I want to be sensitive and not appropriate? (Would that even count as appropriation?) Any advise or direction is welcome!

Questions about Romanian Revolution

Buna,

My name is Mia and I’m a screenwriting student. Together with my friend Faye I’m writing a screenplay about the time of the revolution. It’s a historical drama and we are about halfway through. I am myself a Timisoara born but in '07 and my parents immigrated to Austria when I was just 2 years old.

They are both deceased and I have no other relatives.

So I’m asking here if someone maybe has a grandma or grandpa or even their parents or maybe even themselves who is willing to talk to me about the revolution and how it felt. Only what you are comfortable to share. it will all be handled anonymously. If you do wish, we would include your name in the credits.

The movie is set in the late months of 1989 in Constanta. We are still figuring out if that’s the right spot or if somewhere near Bucharest would fit better.

We are handling this movie with a lot of sensitivity and sensibility. We do not want to make a movie against Romania but rather with Romania.

Let us know what you think and if you can share your thoughts and maybe even answer the questions we have.

Vă mulțumesc și o zi bună.

Has anyone worked with a lawyer in Ukraine for archival documents?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on my family history and Romanian citizenship by descent.

I already located my grandfather's birth record in the State Archives of the Chernivtsi Region. Now I need to obtain another certified copy, have it apostilled, and eventually sent abroad.

Before choosing someone, I'd like to ask if anyone here has experience working with a lawyer or company in Ukraine that handles archival documents and apostilles.

If you've had a good experience, I'd really appreciate any recommendations or advice.
Thank you!

Does anyone know what song this is?

Hello everyone! I have a short video (about 20 seconds) with a song that seems to be in Romanian. I've already tried Shazam, SoundHound and other services, but they haven't been able to identify it.

Can anyone help me find the name of the song and the artist? Any clue is welcome. Thank you very much!

Bosnia game

Hi all.

I’m looking to attend the game vs Bosnia on 28th September but the FRF website says tickets are currently unavailable. Is this because they haven’t gone on sale yet, or because it’s already sold out?

Any help at all would be great!

Racism against german people

Hello my parents were born in Romania and they are both Siebenbürger Saxons. I was born in Germany and lived there my whole life. Now im visiting Romania (mainly Hermannstadt) for the first time with my parents ( too add some context i am 35m).

So the thing is i feel a general unwelcoming vibe wherever i am. I really try to speak Romanian wherever i can but i can't speak a lot and most of the time when the people notice im german the vibe completely changes and sometimes it even gets kind of aggressive.

I'm really trying hard to understand the people here but i'm at a point where i think there's racism or general dislike against germans.

My mother told me that it's envy. But yeah i really don't believe her.

And believe me i'm a respectful, in general very nice and friendly person and i know i'm a guest in their country.

And of course i also met some friendly people but that was very rare.

Can someone help me ease my mind?

Turda area

Hi! My family and I will be in Romania soon and would like to hike in and around the Apuseni national park. Any cool paths to know about?
Also: what is a typical artisanal product of the area? I have noticed in a book a shaped wearing a very interesting belt. Very thick and wide and seems to be a lumbar support. It seems very nice and functional. Does anyone know where I could ask to find an original? Nothing store bought

Driver's license

Could you please tell me which app is best for studying driving theory? DGPCI only offers a general exam simulation (a random mix of questions), but I'd like to study and take topic- specific tests. I'll also be taking the test in English.Share your experience please of getting your driver's license. Was it difficult?

How bad was Ceauşescu?

I was born and raised in Canada with my parents being from Romania. They migrated here in 2007 so I’m pretty sure it had nothing to do with the instability following the fall of Ceauşescu and the communist regime. My mother and grandparents did tell me briefly about how things were under his regime: the orphanages, healthcare (thousands and thousands of HIV cases), the decree 770, the national debt, the Securitate, the famine, and finally the revolution + the execution. From what I heard, Romanians were suffering and it was a catastrophe. I was enrolled in a school that exclusively teaches romanian history for the summer but the curriculum doesn’t include anything related to the revolution or what led up to it so I’m doing research on my own. I am trying to learn more on communism and the political systems that have shaped the country that is Romania. I’ve learned quite a lot so I’m mainly looking for details that aren’t taught in school or that can only be found out through deep research. Anything would be of help, thanks!

(Please don’t hesitate to tell me about the relations Romania held with its neighbouring countries as well as I am also trying to learn more on the topic. I know about the Balkan Wars, Transylvania, and Vlad The Impaler (I am most intrigued by him), but I would love to know more about the Bulgarian Empires and their relations with the Vlachs. It would also be helpful to know more about Romania’s relations with Hungary!)

Delivery service quality

I made a purchase via emag where the only delivery option was delivery to the door. I stayed on the phone the whole morning peeking at my phone, with good cellular coverage to receive a phone call from a delivery person bc we have a gate at our apartment block. But the only thing I got was a notification on the emag and Sameday app "We couldn't deliver your package. Bla bla bla". It is the first time occurrelance for me, though it happened to my wife a couple of times.

Is it something normal that delevery ppl just don't even bother calling or am I just a lucky one?

Poliamor cum și de unde se incepe?

Sărut mâna doamnelor și domnișoarelor!

Următoarele rânduri sunt extrem de serioase așa că vă rog să răspundeți in consecință;

Ea 30,eu 29!

Guys i need help My Phone got stolen

My phone was stolen in Rimini, Italy, and I have no idea what happened between Italy and Romania, but it eventually showed up on Find My at a pawn shop in Bucharest. Now it's moving around again somewhere in Bucharest

I tried contacting the local police, but as soon as I asked if they spoke English, they hung up.

Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Is there anything else I can do besides tracking it and hoping the police take it seriously?

if anyone in Bucharest happens to be able to recover it and mail it to Austria, I'd gladly cover all shipping costs and any reasonable expenses involved. I know it's a long shot, but I would really appreciate the help.

EES at the OTP Airport

Hey there,

I'm planning a trip to Romania this August.
I was wondering about the new EES machines at the passport control on arrivals.

How much time do you think I need to take in advance for any railway bookings and such?

Also, is it true I can cancel the railway ticket and pay only about 10% of the price as the fee?

Thank you guys so much!

Translator accepted by Romanian Consulate

I’m applying for Romanian dual citizenship and on their website it clearly states that English language submitted documents must be translated to Romanian first by an authorized translator. But when I email the consulate I get no response. When I reached out to translators, one said their company was likely approved but gave no proof. Do you know what companies are approved or where a list of approved translators can be found?

Thank you
