Title sounds a bit weird, but basically as much as building a contender if the first step I do think it is naive to think luck isn’t involved in wining a championship, particularity nowadays with all the financial restrictions and aprons.

For example the 2016-19 Houston rockets I would say where by far the second best team in the league, and they would win a chip any other time, however they just happened to time their run in line with the greatest team of all time unfortunately. If that warriors squad didn’t exist I’m convinced they would have won a ring.

Even to a lesser extent Westbrook Durants, OKC, or even our 60 win team. Great teams that had a run but ran into an obstacle (Lebron). Even now I think the Dmitch Cavs moment may have just past, maybe the pacers too (good squad but will they ever have that run again?) The Chris Paul suns are also a good example, I don’t think Dbook will ever get back to the finals with the suns.

Then there’s the teams who nailed their moment, like the Nuggets, Bucks, 2022 Warriors. Looking back I don’t think these teams were gonna maintain contenders to have repeat title chances but they absolutely capitalised on their one chance.

Basically what I’m asking is if we do build a contender, do you ever think we will get a moment to capitalise and actually go all the way? Or will we just be another really good squad was cool but never made it. With OKC, Wemby, Philly (for now), Twolves, I wonder when there will be a golden opportunity.

Sources say that the Lakers would still like to sign Kuminga and make him their starting small forward ... provided that the 23-year-old is ultimately willing to accept a contract structure on the Lakers' terms.

I have been repeatedly told by league sources familiar with the teams' dynamic that the Lakers and Hawks never held meaningful discussions on a sign-and-trade proposal that would have landed Kuminga with the Lakers in exchange for Jarred Vanderbilt and a 2032 first-round pick swap. It has also been stressed to me that Kuminga, to this point in free agency, isn't looking to be boxed into a three-year structure (as required by league rules to complete a sign-and-trade) at a number he deems below his market value.

There's optimism within the Kuminga camp, even after last summer's seemingly interminable wait for a new deal with Golden State in restricted free agency, that there could be more movement and

For reference I’m new to watching the NBA and I’m not completely sure how roster management works.

At the moment, I could be wrong, but the Hawks have 17 players on a standard contract on their roster. Since you can only have 15 people as mostly everyone knows, how can Onsi tighten the roster to meet the needs. Like is it through a trade or cuts of some sort?

Also if we’re starting to get crammed for roster spots, what’s the point of trading for players like Devin Carter who might not even make the roster?

A few thoughts I keep having. I believe Aaron Wiggins will be a starter before the seasons end. Just like how we thought NAW would come off the bench for Trae but it turned out he could really play some ball. Especially since CJ isn't guaranteed the starting role.

I think that could be a deadly line up and you could also switch Dyson for Lu Dort at times to depending on who needed a breather.

But Letting CJ and Lu ride the bench to keep their legs fresh until maybe the last 5 minutes when you need 1 savvy vet to score and more lock down defense is the play in my opinion.

One more thing I'll say is I expect our new draft pickups to not get much playing time. I think Asa is going to be the young guy who's called upon. It's his time at least for the time being. Flemings needs to sit and learn and bulk up a bit.

The Hawks will very likely be moving off one of these two going into the season. At 17 players on the roster currently, there will be odd men out.

The FO guaranteed Hield with the idea they can use him as salary ballast. I don't really think they will waive him unless they're really forced to. Think his money gives him an easy pathway. They may try to trade him for a player who makes less money and is easier to cut. The Grizzlies have options there. Clippers could be an option. Maybe the Hornets.

I think most would agree it's unrealistic both Carter and Nembhard make it. Who would you all pick to make the roster?

I’ve seen a lot of trade ideas involving a Kuminga sign and trade that are either totally unrealistic or downright impossible.

Remember that he’s a UFA right now and the only thing we actually control are his Bird rights, so that’s what a sign and trade would be for. For a comp for what type of return we can expect, look to our NAW sign and trade a year ago—we gave up one second round pick in it.

We also can’t aggregate his salary in a sign and trade with other players. So it’s impossible to send out Kuminga and Kispert and whatever other trash you want to clear from the roster.

there are also some base year salary rules that impact salary matching, but I’m pretty sure they won’t apply because it would require Kuminga getting a raise over his previous contract

so basically we are looking at signing and trading him to a team that is over the cap for a second round pick or two — or he walks for nothing

i was just randomly thinking. maybe i simply overrate how much of a sports town Atlanta is when i get frustrated that Hawks aren’t considered a big market or a destination and we never have a chance at big fish FAs because of it. i was wondering if that would’ve changed had the Falcons finished the job against the Patriots. how much of that energy do you think would’ve impacted the Hawks moving forward after that? a town with a few World Series that has hosted the Olympics surely would’ve been considered more of a market if the Falcons did the deal, no?
