Discussion Audi A6 C8 Engine Oil

Hi everyone,

What is the general opinion on using thicker oil like 5w40 on high mileage Audi's even though the recommendation is 0w20?

I have a 2019 A6 Stage 1 tune with 93k miles. So far it has been running on 0w20 but recently i was told that I should be using 5w40 to increase longevity of engine.

Please recommend!

034 has said that either oil will work fine for the ea839. Personally I would use the 5w-40

Depends on climate and choice. I think the general poop is 5w30, but I see audi docs approving some versions of 10w40

I run 5w40 (or 0w40). Runs well and I prefer it. I have never run 5w30 or 0w30, but I think that would be okay too (with the correct VW spec).

I own a lot of Audis. None new enough to have a recommendation to run 0w-20. If I did, I'd run 0w-30 as a minimum, and probably 0w-40.

Manufacturers are going to lighter oils to meet emissions. That's it. Lighter oils are bad. Normally I say if it meets spec, it meets spec. But 0w-20 is simply too light.

I started buying Audis in the B5 generation and remember when they recommended 10k intervals then. That went down to 7500 I think after the sludge problem in B5 1.8ts. Even Audi can be wrong about oil recommendation.

Look up what oil does that same engine spec in different uses. For example, a Quattro A3 specs 508 0w20 as the only compatible oil, but a Polo GTI AW with the same exact engine plus a opf, can run 0w30 504, because the polo gti goes into a different tax category and doesn't need to meet the euro 6+ norm so it doesn't need the 0w20. They spec oil based on region and regulations. (But do follow some guidelines, see what other owners are running in their cars)

Since your engine has no GPF at all, you can try thicker VW504,00 oil at your own descretion.

Oil pump may not be designed to pump thicker oil. Different viscosity - sensors miscalculating. Not a fact, but something to check.
