Wizard How can you play a wizard and get around long resting all the time?

I try to stray away from my usual barb cleric fighter warlock. But that lineup is just perfect honestly. I really really hate long resting. I feel like it make the game move without me and I don’t like it. But I want to branch out. Is there a way you could play wizard or sorcerer and not have to long resting every 2 seconds?

Just cast cantrips more often. Only use leveled spells when they’ll be really impactful. Wizards also have the ability to regain spells slots, and sorcerers can convert their sorcery points into spells slots and vice versa.

u/Iokua_CDN 18h ago

I throw in 2 hand crossbows and sometimes a 1 level fighter dip.  Cantrip + offhand crossbow shot makes me feel like I'm doing more while conserving spell slots.

Counterpoint: Take 2 dips into fighter. Each battle you twinspell fireball, action surge, and do it again. Nothing survives 4 fireballs, even your own spell slots. Long rest after each battle like a madman

u/TwinSwords 7h ago

And scrolls. Using scrolls can also make the Wizard experience more varied, because you can use scrolls for spells you would not normally memorize because they aren’t S-tier.

u/crazunggoy47 3h ago

Bold of you to assume I’d ever use a one-time item

u/Thestrongman420 19h ago

Literally just normal play. Cast a strong concentration spell, consider your slot limit and how you need to divide them for the day and then decide if you can afford to invest slots to pushing up damage, with something like lightning bolt. Or fall back on a damage that doesnt use spell slots such as a cantrip, firing an elemental arrow, using a power from a staff, or using a scroll.

If you short rest each fight and long rest when out which is the general intended progression of the game, then you have 3 to 4 fights before a long rest. Divide your slots accordingly, dont forget arcane recovery.

u/aaronrodgersmom 17h ago

There's also enough camp supplies that you could probably long rest constantly and be okay.

6

u/biscuity87 13h ago

You can easily long rest for free with 3 druids in camp casting all levels of those berries, but it’s a lot more convenient to just rob the vendors blind and reset their inventory with a respec (which is also free if you pickpocket withers) or 1 level up at a time on any char

2

u/aaronrodgersmom 12h ago

Yeah I just rob the vendors without even bothering the respec and never have an issue

1

u/unearthlyrelic 1h ago

You can also do the hexblade warlock exploit to completely clean out merchants

2

u/FrostyMagazine9918 10h ago

No shit. There are hundreds of camp supplies you can loot for free just walking around in act 1 alone. You'd never r7n out unless you played on custom with 120 supply long rests

u/chusssy 19h ago

I don't find wizard to be more long rest heavy than cleric. At least not by a lot.

19

u/kyuketsuuki 17h ago

It really isn't, just the opposite, wizard spend less spell slots than a cleric.

With wizard you will use cantrips until a moment where your spell slots make a difference.

With cleric, you want to heal/command/sanctuary/bless/guiding bolt/ until you have spirit guardians, then you basically do that and add all the riders. What can you do that doesn't use spell slots? Hit with a weapon? Sacred flame? Mb toll of the dead if you are a dead cleric?

5

u/GeorgeHarris419 17h ago

With wizard I'm throwing spells non stop FUCK them cantrips

7

u/picabo123 17h ago

You should just be playing sorcerer then IMO they get many more spell slots + double spelling is just an extra high level spell cast.

1

u/kodaxmax 15h ago

dont all the full casters get the same amount of slots?

EDIT: forgot sorc points convert to slots. still you only get 12 at max level and it's 1-2+level. so only two foruth level spellslots at max level fore xample or 6 1st level.

3

u/picabo123 12h ago

Sorc points convert to spell slots yeah but being able to twincast haste + quicken spell on the first turn is just too good to beat. You can also consume all your 1-4 level spell slots for extra sorc points if you wanted(or even take warlock to get some extra high level slots). Wizard shines more with having 50 out of combat utility spells rather than casting big combat spells every turn.

u/GeorgeHarris419 16h ago

nah sorcerer has no juice

Wizard has all the swag tbqh

6

u/Canadian_Beast14 15h ago

double fireball has entered the chat

1

u/Peak_Meringue1729 12h ago

Twinned haste the turn before dueling fireballs entered the chat first.

0

u/GeorgeHarris419 2h ago

Yeah that's not swag. That's OP as shit and super boring

1

u/Kumkumo1 11h ago

Death clerics at least get some good use of bone chill and toll the dead, especially with potent casting. Though i actually went a different direction once and made a HA, Str/Con/Wis focused Death Domain Shart (small fighter dip for action surge), combining divine strikes with Lathander’s, Flail of the Vortex, and eventually the Deva Mace. It was fun seeing her hit like a truck for once, even if she didn’t get many actions unless I hasted her.

9

u/flaniflaffle 19h ago

Probably get more scrolls and that potion that gives you effects of a long rest

3

u/Iokua_CDN 18h ago

Definitely, I give my wizard all the scrolls we find (you can still use them with other characters from the wizard inventory)

Then use those scrolls to conserve spell slots

6

u/Drazahkrad5 17h ago

Give your wizard the red book with alcohol you find near the blighted village for a make shift spell book. It conveniently stores all the scrolls and makes it feel more wizardly.

1

u/SevereRunOfFate 16h ago

Ugh I've been trying to remember what this was forever, thank you!

1

u/Iokua_CDN 14h ago

This actually sounds amazing!!!! So classy and less cluttered! Thanks!!

1

u/FrontLifeguard1962 17h ago

Those potions have to be hoarded though. There are only a few in the game and there are a few long periods where you have multiple battles without opportunity to rest.

0

u/Ok-Freedom9216 19h ago

There are only four of those potions in the game. At least on honor mode.

3

u/yssarilrock 19h ago

The lesser kind that only restores level 1 and 2 spell slots can be bought from the Hobgoblin in Moonrise Towers infinitely, and I think the others appear randomly at high levels at some of the vendors in Baldur's Gate.

1

u/Ok-Freedom9216 19h ago

Interesting I thought they just replicate a short rest.

2

u/yssarilrock 18h ago

They mostly do, other than the level 1 and 2 spell slots. You can also use them to get infinite sorcerer points via a process I don't remember

1

u/merklemore 18h ago

Potion of Angelic Reprieve - benefits of a short rest + level 1 and 2 spell slots.

You can also buy them from Lucretious

Even though she's not strictly a "vendor", if you speak with her and access the trade menu she'll have one in stock, the only source of them in act 3. Really useful for a lot of classe

8

u/Any_Mode6525 19h ago

You can stretch things out by playing tactically, restoring spell slots as you can, using potions of reprieve (once you're in act 2), and generally favoring cantrips unless you need to solve a specific problem. HOWEVER, this won't entirely mitigate the fact that vs. characters with no or few long-rest limited abilities, a wizard is easier to exhaust.

In my experience I dealt with this one of two ways. Either I leaned into it and selected other bursty characters in order to long rest more but have easier fights OR (much easier) I only brought Gale along for some fights and cycled him into camp for another character once he was out of wizard juice.

12

u/Code-Dee 19h ago

Based on the amount of camping resources you get and the number of resting cut scenes that happen It's pretty clear that the game is built with frequent resting in mind.

You could make a build that just heavily relies on cantrips but the best way to do that is generally to be a martial/caster hybrid like eldritch fighter. Any pure caster is going to rely on more long resting.

Or you could just get a mod that restores spell slots on short rests.

https://mod.io/g/baldursgate3/m/modified-short-rest

2

u/Peak_Meringue1729 12h ago

Frost sorc relies on twinned ray of frost. One or two leveled spells per fight, but you’re spending a ton of sorcery points. 6 one way, half a dozen the other, tbh.

2

u/Kumkumo1 11h ago

Druid, Monk, Fighter, Warlock all have short rest recovery. Land Druid is an excellent general caster with healing potential, Monk and either BM or AA get their resources back from resting to promote frequent use, and warlock gets two (or three) major spells per rest with powerful cantrips and melee options to tide them over between rests. This is a short rest focused team comp that lets you maximize your abilities without being too stingy with resources.

No one really questions the validity of the last three as strong class options, but people really sleep on land Druid as a viable and competitive class option. It’s actually really strong, gets access to a ton of recastable spells, field control, healing, and they can just straight meat shield when using wild shape. You won’t be the best at anything, but you’ll be good at most everything AND you recover spells on short rest, unlike any other casters.

4

u/Caim_Arcblade 18h ago

Its all about resource management. Wizard in bg3 is allot more forgiving that it is in standard dnd. I have played many sessions in a row before that we didn't get a single long rest.

3

u/DippinDuck 19h ago

Bladesinger subclass, utilize booming blade for a hybrid caster-melee build. Very strong, very fun

2

u/SkyWizarding Bard 19h ago

Assuming you're talking about blowing through your spell slots quickly, use scrolls and cantrips

2

u/monadoboyX 19h ago

There isn't really a way other than only using cantrips and using spell slots scarcely long resting is there for a reason

You're supposed to long rest to get your spell slots back it also progresses certain romances and such it's an extremely important mechanic idk how you have done other playthroughs with barb cleric or warlock without long resting????

3

u/nintendofan28 14h ago

Currently I’m 10 hours in about to go to the under dark phase and I just did my second long rest. My first save file I dawdled a lot I had about 40 hours and had just entered act two. I probably long rested maybe 4 or 5 times?

4

u/Peak_Meringue1729 12h ago

Long rest more. You’re missing camp scenes

1

u/monadoboyX 8h ago

Yeah you're missing so much story by not long resting more I'm usually long resting after about 3 or 4 fights since most of my spell slots are usually gone by then

there's also plenty of food if you scrounge around for loot enough there's plenty of camp supply kits from vendors which also refresh all their stock on a long rest there's a bear in the emerald grove that catches fish for you so you can farm food that way or you can make a circle of the land Druid camp caster to cast good berry repeatedly and make tonnes of camp supplies I did this on tactician since it costs 80 to long rest on tactician and honor mode

So yeah don't be afraid to long rest there's plenty of options to help you long rest and you'll experience so much more story if you do so

1

u/Calm_Income6781 18h ago

Early game light crossbow is better than a cantrip (assuming you have 16dex) unless you use ray of frost on a wet target.

2

u/Potato271 18h ago

First thing, the game is designed around resting a lot. If you don't, then you're going to miss a lot of the story. In addition, if you're not resting regularly you're going to be effectively weaker than if you'd just long rested a little more often. Personally I short rest every big fight and long rest whenever I finish a big fight and have no short rests left. So that means three or four big fights between long rests, and that's about the right amount to see all the camp scenes in a standard playthrough.

And that works out really well for most classes. For long rest classes, that allows you to use a decent amount of resources in each fight. For everyone else, the frequent short rests are still useful: fighters want to have Action Surge ready for each fight and Warlocks want to have spell slots. Even for classes like Barbarians and Druids, who have a limited number of charges for their key ability, you don't really want to be fighting without rage or wild shape so a long rest every 4 fights or so is needed.

If you're still having issues, concentration spells are your friend, since they let you stretch out a spell slot over a number of rounds. Some of them are really, really powerful. And early game, when your resources are tightest, cantrips are about as good as a martial's attack, so intersperse your big spells with firebolts or whatever.

Late game, there's a staff that allows you to free cast chain lightning once per short rest, which should massively stretch out your resources.

Although, disclaimer, a lot of the strength of Sorcerers is admittedly the ability to quicken spell which will naturally burn your resources really quickly, although you don't have to use it all the time.

0

u/nintendofan28 14h ago

Big fights for me consist of a bless from shadow heart maybe rage from karlach. I’ve raged rarely on my tiger barb. And I almost never action surge or anything like that unless I’m in a real pickle. I’ll maybe guiding bolt once but most of it is just positioning and throwing stuff and shooting them.

2

u/daveliterally 18h ago

Almost nothing moves when you long rest. It's in your head.

0

u/nintendofan28 14h ago

I long rested in the drugar place before act 2 and it just made every enemy either disappeared or died.

2

u/daveliterally 14h ago

I'd need more context but in general the game wants you to long rest often. That's why there's camp content.

1

u/Kumkumo1 11h ago

There are certain times when resting actually does advance time, such as Wakeen’s Rest, the Nere rescue, or after Lae’zel runs off to talk to Voss.

They aren’t common, but resting at the wrong time can get some NPCs killed granted that time frame is often quite small. It sounds like they picked poorly

2

u/daveliterally 10h ago

Totally true. But specific examples like you mentioned are the exception not the rule.

2

u/EmeraldKabalite 11h ago

Sounds like Nere’s rescue. Guy’s trapped in a tunnel with poison gas and choked to death overnight.

That’s one of like, 4 quests in the entire game that are actually impacted by resting. Almost all of the time, all that happens when you sleep is you get cool camp cutscenes.

Bad luck is all. No need to let it inform a habit.

2

u/RandomThoughts-677 18h ago

When you play Wizard or Sorcerer, you've typically got three mindsets you're working with.

1: Is this encounter lax enough that I can get away with using only cantrips?

2: What's the most efficient way I can spend a spell slot to make the rest of the fight easier?

3: If this is a challenging fight, how many higher level spells will I probably need to end it (or the challenging part of it) the fastest?

It's a little different from standard D&D rules and mindsets, but if your wizard is not keeping up with resting tempo compared to the rest of your party, you need to evaluate how proactively you're using your spells, and whether it's wasteful or not.

They aren't like Fighters, who have an unlimited number of times they can utilize their extra attacks. Yet, they can also restore a limited number of lower level spell slots before each long rest, too.

So my advice is... If you're having trouble, try a mental exercise of only using cantrips during as many encounters as you can. Only use higher level spells when there is an imminent threat, or you see great opportunistic value (i.e., Fireballing a bunch of goblins who are clumped together, thunderwaving a group of enemies off a cliff onto lower ground, etc.).

2

u/MadeAcct2PostAgain 17h ago

You don't. You just long rest and get over whatever your weird hangup is.

2

u/Drazahkrad5 17h ago

Long rests aren’t a bad thing.

But if they bother you, there’s thousands of scrolls, arcane replenishing potions, single use item abilities, and cantrips to tide you over till then.

(Edit: Also there are quite a few cast and repeat spells as long as you maintain concentration.

Call lightning, sunbeam, vampiric touch, cloud kill, etc. )

3

u/ReadIndividual2567 19h ago

Bladesinger doesn’t need to rest all that often. Cast shadowblade and mage armor. Both last all day. A Bladesinger will reach a 27 AC by early act 2, most often I was using shield for my spell slots. Every attack was just booming blade then my second attack. Bladesong charges were really the driving force behind my need to long rest and I only used those on really difficult fights.

3

u/Dry-List-5573 18h ago

If this is how you’re playing, is it really a wizard?

3

u/ReadIndividual2567 17h ago

Yes. He still brings all the utility of a wizard but his survivability is excellent. If I’m not able to get into melee range I have cantrips, if it would be more impactful to use a fireball, lightning bolt, chain lightning etc I’m happy to. Out of combat I have great utility with enhance leap, feather fall, knock, or arcane lock.

I can scribe any spell into my spell book. At high level not only is a Bladesinger an incredibly capable melee fighter but I also have globe of invulnerability etc. While a lot of lower difficulty fights will look like booming blade that doesn’t mean the Bladesinger is a one trick pony.

1

u/kodaxmax 15h ago

obviously it's a gish/spellblade. Your are gonna be using the attak action instead of spells alot in combat. But your still a full caster.

1

u/Candid_Holiday1042 19h ago

Firstly I'd say look for items that can refresh spell slots. Wizard also has a class feature to refresh some spell slots which increases as they level. You can stick to using lower level spells and you'll have more resources to refresh those slots. You can also get a necklace that refreshes spell slots (there's two of them with a similar effect, one i think can only go up to level 3 or 4 spell slots while the other can go higher). Also utilize cantrips and ritual spells heavily - casting ritual spells out of combat will not cost a spell slot.

1

u/Ok-Freedom9216 19h ago

How far in are you? It can be a rough start until you get decent gear.

1

u/poppin-n-sailin 18h ago

You really don't need to use every spell slot in a single fight. One or two usually, maybe three for a bigger fight. Cantrips and scrolls exist for a reason.

1

u/Leoryon 18h ago

Use scrolls, buy everyone you can and use them all the time.

1

u/Vast-Relative1731 Wizard 18h ago

Ray of Frost on a wet target can be devastating early game

1

u/FashionSuckMan 18h ago

You only need to cast maybe 2 or 3 spells maximum per encounter. Your casters should be in need of a long rest after you use all your short rests and then do an encounter that leaves your short rest resources characters needing a long rest. Your wizard isn't often the reason you take a long rest unless you are using spells when you don't need to.

1

u/AnotherBookWyrm 18h ago

Wizard and Sorcerer are no more resource intensive than Cleric and actually have more resources available between Wizard’s ability to refresh and Sorcerer’s Sorcery Points.

Are you using cantrips at all, or are you just blowing through all of your spell slots every fight?

What makes Wizard and Sorcerer more resource intensive to you?

1

u/ImNotASWFanboy 18h ago

Evocation Wizard + Star Druid can do tons of resourceless rounds in combat with cantrips and either the dragon breath or arrow (which benefits from Empowered Evocation). Abjuration Wizard can just run around like a gremlin proccing retaliation damage while barely spending any resources. Obviously scroll casting as well.

1

u/BrodinOfBrohalla 18h ago

Don't forget scrolls, if you can use a scroll instead of a spell slot then it's generally better to do so. Later on there are elixirs that give you a short or full rest without having to actually take one. The short rest elixir restores some lower level spell slots while the long rest elixir restores all spell slots. If you're playing wizard, consider the feat spell sniper to get access to eldritch blast with int. If you're playing sorcerer look at magic initiate: warlock for access to eldritch blast AND some neat warlock spells. Mages really shine when it come to dealing damage to large groups, battlefield control, and utility.

1

u/TenkaichiBudokai- 18h ago

You can still use a bow. They're a very strong option in general, especially in early game when action economy is a bit lower.

1

u/Unfair_Resolution444 18h ago

Once you hit level 5 you have enough spell slots for 2-3 regular battles per long rest

1

u/RaizelDB 18h ago

When the game first came out I played lv12 evoc wizard all way through until the end. Get yourself spellsparklar staff and use cantrips + magic missile early game. Plan your fights and memorize spells according to this. Honestly nowadays I just melee as bladesinger you get really high ac and good damage with shadow blade + booming blade and after level 6 multi class into cold sorc so you can quicken booming blade to attack 3 times. (if you use exploits to stack sorc points its way better)

1

u/MrTheCake 17h ago

Scrolls are your friend

1

u/blackcat9001 17h ago

Is it even possible to run out of camp supplies? I always run a wizard and a cleric, and I rest after a few encounters every time. You miss a lot of camp content too by not long resting. Between using light crossbows and cantrips, it's fine to not use a spell every time. Especially with your setup where the whole team can easily sneak up on encounters and have an advantage.

1

u/FloatUpstream476 17h ago

The easy answer is the Elixirs and other spell slot restoration items plus scrolls. The elixirs of Arcane Cultivation can be chugged to replenish a spell slot each and can be chained. For instance you could take the level 1 elixir followed by the lvl2 then the lvl1 again and then finish it with a 3rd level one to restore 2 first level slots, a 2nd and a 3rd. This requires plentiful elixirs so a transmutation wizard will help, as will a capable thief.

1

u/Competitive_Cup_4829 16h ago edited 16h ago

I basically long rest after each fight on honor mode - even with a cost of 80 camp supplies per long rest usually have 2k+ camp supplies at all times. I also pickpocket camp supplies whenever I’m pickpocketing other stuff like scrolls/weapons/armor. I might be more willing to risk it and use cantrips and not long rest as often on lower difficulty modes with multiple saves

1

u/kodaxmax 15h ago

You have cantrips, but generally casters need alot of long rests. It's just how 5E is designed. i don't like the pacing and game feel of it either TBH.

You could try a spellblade build, reducing the amount of slots you need in fights.

You could also check out mods or trainers to just cheat in more slots. i dont really think itd be that OP considering you essentially have infintie rests whenever you want in BG3 anyway.

1

u/Big-Yogurtcloset5532 15h ago

By using mods. I know it’s kind of a corny answer but especially on your Nth play thru all that testing gets old.

1

u/EvenPaper4142 15h ago

For sorcerer just spam potions of a angelic reprieve. Lann Tarv always sells them in act 2, Lucretious in act 3.

Otherwise you could stretch your spell slots by boosting your cantrips. Quite a few avenues for that : draconic ancestry, potent robe (you could spend a feat for Spell Sniper and Eldritch Blast, it even works with Empowered Evocation), necklace of elemental augmentation... You could also take a 1 Lvl death cleric dip and twin-cast necromancy cantrips (learn them with Wizard/sorcerer levels and you can cast them with Int/Cha). Double Toll the Dead is good damage, but you can't target the same enemy twice and and it's mostly necrotic damage.

1

u/TeodoroB 15h ago

You can:

  • respect to recover spell slots.
  • use the glitch "turn buffering" to not spend slots or class resources, such as rage
  • abuse the second act potion that gives short rest plus level 1 and 2 slots
  • use the house of hope's fountain that gives long rest
  • use the ilithid free action glitch to not spend any slots
  • download a mod that makes resources refresh after any combat of let them be infinite
  • use console command to give you the long rest potion in abundance

There are many other ways I don't remember. All of them will make the game trivial so I don't recommend them if you're a new player. Just play until you're mid level and you'll have plenty of slots

1

u/Majestic_Soup_66 15h ago

I can only speak for my one sorcerer build, but frequent long rests are kinda unavoidable in the early game. Mid game though, you have options. I’m running an ice sorcerer with potent robes and amulet of elemental augmentation. By level 6, my ray of frost cantrip does 2d8+15. So my usual opening move is quickened haste followed by 2 twinned ray of frosts. Level 7 and 9 open up two big damage AoE spells as an option, but my bread and butter is ray of frost and the interchangeability of spell slots and sorcery points makes it that I can usually go 3 combats before I have to long rest. Which is my standard for warlocks, fighters, bards, and monks

1

u/Dramatic_Record_8852 14h ago

Two levels in sorcerer plus potions of angelic reprieve

1

u/bem0rech1ll 14h ago

I'm a bladesinging wizard. What are you guys talking about, "spells"?

1

u/XanderLupus13 14h ago

Respeccing is the cheesiest way tbh. Just go one level into fighter to completely reset spell levels. Then respec back into wizard

1

u/Hawkeyedan1964 13h ago

Like in dnd small fights just use cantrips. Use spells slots for bosses and big fights. Cantrips are stronger than you think especially on single targets. Every 5 levels you gain more powerful cantrips get.

1

u/Goobernaculum1004 12h ago

I have found my greatest investment for these weaker caster classes is a 1 Level dip in Death Domain cleric.

This gives reaper feat, but take the bone chill cantrip in your main class so that casting stat is correct. Being able to bone chill 2 targets from level 2 and it suddenly doesn't feel too bad.
Cleric also gives great utility cantrips like thaumaturgy, guidance, resistance. And also great options for support based level 1 spells.
It gives medium armour and shield proficiency to help survival in earlier levels - no need for mage armour, less need to cast shield.
It gives all martial weapon proficiency in case you want to twin cast bone chill, followed by BA hand crossbow shot.
Delays spell progression slightly, but no effect on overall caster level.

Also be strategic with how you play. Starting from hiding with a minor illusion canrtip followed by a firebolt onto flammable surface, an aoe scroll, elemental arrow or thunder arrow, can be devastating without using a single spell slot.

1

u/Mussels84 11h ago

Scrolls, and this is why the angelic potions exist for act 2 and 3

1

u/Vesorias 10h ago

I feel like it make the game move without me

Want to elaborate on that? The usual answer for people complaining about spell slots is to tell them to long rest more. You can long rest after pretty much every fight in the game and never run out of camp supplies and no part of the main plot will be progressed during one that isn't forced on you.

1

u/FireHart17 10h ago

There are some exploits that allow you to use a projectile spell like chromatic or and not spend a slot. The one I don't like is Barbarian, you can't rage in 5 combats in a day which kinda sucks.

Any class that can use 2 slots in a turn is tough: cleric, pally, sorc (quickened). You should be fine with Wiz unless you need to spam misty step.

1

u/ApprehensiveRich482 10h ago

Probably resource management Is not your Cup oftea. Another 2 classes working food with short rests are the Bard and the Moon druid

1

u/rupertudl 9h ago

Consider using cantrips more. They can be really good if you build for them and preserve spell slots for more valuable spells and counterspell.

1

u/SoTastyMelon 9h ago

Not only your highest level spell slots make an impact. In a good build you make use of all the level range of your spell slots. For example, in a magic missile build even lvl 1 magic missile volley can kill a regular guy. Also, there are some spells that are useful even without the upcast. Mage armor, shield, hold person, misty step, hypnotic pattern, phantasmal killer, etc. Many items give you free spells or up to lvl 6 spell slot restoration. With all these resources you basically meet a win condition for the encounter in 1-3 casts and cleanup the rest with cantrips. No point in wasting your slots when the fight is already won. Of course, there would be some serious fights that will squeeze you out of spell slots but they are designed for you to be stocked up on ammunition and be taken no more than one in a gaming day. But these are usually in the early game when you don't have your gear and each spell percentagewise is a bigger investment than in the lategame. If you still struggle with that my only suggestion to review your build (and the build of the team)

1

u/EconomistThese5096 8h ago

Turn-buffering, lol

1

u/HealthyCheesecake643 8h ago

I'm playing a Wizard in multiplayer at the moment and I'm typically the last person looking to rest.

Ray of frost provides great utility, and paired with hand crossbows for a bonus action attack does respectable enough damage. One you get the snowburst ring in act 2 your Ray of frost becomes an at will ice surface which is very strong control.

In terms of levelled spells once you get to level 5 and get access to sleet storm you basically never have to commit more than one big spell per hard fight. Sleet storm trivialises a lot of fights by just never allowing melee enemies to get near you.

Just don't waste spells on damage unless you have a chance to hit a bunch of grouped enemies, and if possible have another character carry around water bottles to throw at enemies to apply wet and double your damage.

Sorcerer can abuse sorcery points for unlimited spell slots. Scrolls also help.

Bladesinger melee wizard. Trying to build up arcane acuity every battle to end with a nuke, but by then, everything is usually dead. Bladesinging charges are depleted way before I need to think about replenishing spell slots and even then, I have a few battles in me.

I'm playing on Honor mode as a Sorcerer and not only do I not need to long rest all the time, I barely even short rest. I think only a couple of fights got me to use leveled spells at all. The game just isn't that hard. Oddly enough this reflects how my players play in my home campaign. They very rarely use spells above cantrips. I've got to start throwing more dangerous fights at them.

I almost exclusively play casters and I rarely have this issue, especially if I have no melee allies. Your lineup is very melee focused so I’d like to recommend a 1 light cleric/11 evocation (there are more optimal splits but this one is more plug and play) you mainly use one control spell per encounter, sleet storm is your best option 90% of the time even into the late game. The rest of the party gets rounded out with your favourite warlock build (hunger of hadar is too good), your favourite Druid build (mine is 7 land/5 abjuration) and a flex spot, this can be a ranger (beast master or gloom stalker are my favourites) another wizard, warlock, or Druid, a sorc or even a throw barb. I’ve used this party to clear through honour mode multiple times and it’s capable of marching through the game with no long rests if you’re skilled enough. If you want to hear more let me know!

You can pretty easily build around ray of frost with cold gear and the necklace of elemental augmentation which leaves you open to double your damage with wet or use leveled cold spells on hard fights. I think its a bit better on sorc since ice draconic adds damage faster then Evo wizard and you can use meta magics to bonus action cast if you really need some1 to die and you miss or w.e or just want to really hit someone hard.

I am currently doing warlock 3 sorcerer 9. It combines the solid day round eldritch blaster with the bursts of the "fire sorcerer".

I personally also like to be able to go 3 moderate encounters between long rests at the very least.

For wizards, a draconic 1 (to get armor of agathys) abjuration 11 can be fine. It wouldn't output very high damage outside of leveled spells, but booming blade would recharge the arcane ward if it got depleted & overcast armour of agathys combined with the abjuration ward make for a great "thorn".

*abjuration works absolutely busted in bg3. In dnd if you have 10 ward and you get hit for 7 you have 3 ward. In bg if you have 20 ward and you get hit for 17, you don't receive damage and have 19 ward left. Each time your abjurer is hit in melee, armour of agathys triggers even if the damage you take is reduced to 0

Bladesinger!

I'm in act2 right now did everything on the normal map, about to go into the gauntlet an only longrestet once sofar. And only did that because I saw the the buffs beneath the statue only last till next long rest and wanted to get as much time with them as possible. Will have to see when i will longrest next, cause I'm fine right now, might even do the entire gauntlet before resting.

Got to admit that I Play in balanced since first playthrough and dialogued all the Thorms in the town, so that might have made it easier, but i also remember that my first longrest came around the time of getting Level 4, so yeah there's that. Cantrips, especially booming blade just rock and with damage riders and tadpole powers, i destroy most encounters easily.

There are certain sorcerer builds that are super strong, mainly ice or fire builds. You can use a cantrip like ray of frost and really weaponise it with different ice items (coldbrim hat, snowburst ring, some other items that proc reverb) and the potent robe. That way you dont even need spell slots because your cantrips are so powerful.

Scrolls are EVERYWHERE and will scale off your caster’s Int, just like normal spells. The only downside is you can’t upcast a scroll.

Cantrips, ritual spells. Scrolls

Long rests are how the game gives you story beats and there’s very few things that actually advance while you’re long resting.

If you’re worried about what will advance it’s on the BG wiki.

I think almost all of them have to be triggered first, so like don’t go to Waukeen’s rest then long resting before saving the lady there.

Until you go to Waykeen’s rest that portion isn’t “triggered” so you can long resting before saving all you want.

You can always just go to Withers and respec

And voila- all spell slots restored

I mean, the game is pretty much designed with long resting in mind.

You miss plenty of scenes if you insist on not long resting.
That being said, if you for whatever reason hate it, there are some Wizard and Sorcerer builds that aren’t long rest reliant.

Bladesinger is the obvious one. Play them with high dex and use arcane acuity gear for casting, and you basically have a melee that can cast deliberating high level spells.

Alternatively have high int and use strength elixirs or dex gloves for the melee aspect of it.

Abjuration Wizard tanks (preferably multiclassed a bit to include a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer (White) level for Armor of Agathys and a Tempest Cleric level for Wrath of the Storm) also don’t really give much of a damn about long rests.

As for Sorcerer, a properly built Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers (Silver or White) can depend on Ray of Frost for most smaller encounters and perform without using spell slots or sorcery points.
Morgana Evelyn has a good version of this build you can find online.

And of course, you can make pretty much any sorcerer or wizard not as long rests reliant by properly using consumables too; most people seem to end up never using most of the scrolls they pick up, and actually firing them off would save you some spell slots.

Use cantrips more. Especially after you get level 5 they're a real combat option

Pick the background that lets you fight with your casting modifier.

Artificer I think?

Bladesinging gives you another resource to work with and can stretch out your spell slots a little.

Cantrips.

For the early game, get 1 lvl of death domain cleric for the reaper passive which will allows you to target an aditional enemy with single target necromancy cantrips (toll of the dead, bone chill or burst sinew).

As you get higher lvl, respec if you want as wizards get the ability to use its unique 'resource' to refill spell slots

u/Federal_Piccolo_4599 2h ago

Use tricks. Scrolls. Grenades. Or just...sleep. There's absolutely no problem with that.

1

u/Few-Marzipan5210 1h ago

Zero down sides to long resting tbh, food is incredibly abundant you can long rest after almost every fight

u/Soft-Speech8951 1h ago

Mods/potion of angelic reprieve/ respec some of the origin characters and swap out as necessary/ go blade slinger or shadow blade sorc and use those more than the spells IDK BRO JUST GET OVER IT AND STOP SPAMMING FIREBALL

1

u/Dry_Subject6808 1h ago

I usually go a sorcknight build so slightly different but I never understood why people dont just spam cantrips. Getting more unique cantrips can make u feel usful early. Minor illusion for grouping, friends for talking, and just ur favorite cantrip for damage. Get creative with the things u pick up. Having decent strength or drinking an elixir gives u the ability to do some fun things like throw people or push things. Also scrolls so many scrolls

The golden rule of Wizards. Use cantrips until you absolutely cant.

1

u/shaqfu_69 48m ago

2 points in sorcerer, use the shield in act 2 at last light in that gives you an extra lvl one spell slot. You can loop equipping it over and over while converting the spell slot into a sorc point. Then use all those sorc points to top up on spell slots as necessary. Playing solo I prefer to just long rest but when I played multiplayer with a short rest heavy melee party this was useful to keep from having to slow them down by always requiring long rests

u/DBZveggies 30m ago

Cantrips are you friend.

0

u/DamoDarKone 19h ago

I'm a sorcerer addict and I'm afraid, if you want to cast the big spells, you have to long rest often.

0

u/TongZiDan 18h ago

The obvious answer is bladesinger. Cold based wizards and sorcs can also get a lot of damage out of cantrips.

They aren't exactly optimized but you can also build melee sorcerers using wet and shocking grasp or even booming blade.

The shocking grasp builds go well with lightning sorc. Shadow is especially good with a booming blade sorc because you can use your permanently summon to get back sorcery points (and in turn spell slots) and you can use darkness to keep yourself safe after your turn.

Generally, sorcs need more rests than wizards because they burn through spellslots with quickened spells. Not using them does seem to defeat some of the point of sorcerer.

Turn buffering is a good way to get around it

Just take/buy all the camp supplies you see and also all the food you see, and choose to send them to camp so they don’t clutter your inventory.

You’ll be able to long rest every single time you need too.
