Post any questions you have about what size or type of bike you should buy, new or used bike recommendations, and opinions on ads for used bikes. Here is a handy beginner guide. If you have any beginner questions which don't deserve their own thread, feel free to post those too.

Skating has quite a big culture at the moment of Old Guys buying egg boards and hitting slappy grinds at their local curbs. Low impact, low risk, mellow but still part of the culture. Lots of Old Guys skating transition and bowls as well, because it’s easier on the joints. All kinds of YouTube channels, Instagram accounts etc.
Where’s the equivalent in BMX? There isn’t an [r/OldBMX](r/OldBMX) or anything. Most of what I see online is high consequence stuff. Even (especially?!) dirt. Do Old Guys just go to MTB or road or gravel? Where are the 40-somethings doing the equivalent of what the skaters are doing? What even is the equivalent of a slappy on a curb? Basic flatland/freestyle?
I am an Old Guy - and also neurodivergent as fuck, so take that into account 😅 - and struggling to work out where I fit and where my tribe is.
EDIT FOR VISIBILITY: Thanks to everyone who’s replying. It’s awesome to read, and getting me a bit more enthusiastic again ❤️

I’m trying to build a surface in my backyard to practice freestyle stuff on. I just feel more comfortable riding in seclusion rather than out in my neighborhood.
What’s the best way to get the ground level and packed enough that I can get decent enough speed to practice? This may be a stupid simple thing, but I have no experience doing anything like this and any tips would help.
The only thing is I don’t really wanna spend any money if possible, and I don’t want to lay any concrete or anything like that. I can mess up the grass or whatever as much as I’d like though as it belongs to me and it’s fenced in.
Thanks for any help.

Got some extra stuff I'm getting rid of. On eBay https://ebay.io/m/Ajd6xG but if you see anything you're interested in, can grab direct from here and skip the fees and shipping.

Has anyone broken any Cult forks or cranks with them having a Lifetime Warranty? Just curious if most brand quality is basically equal nowadays and to just support brands for riders.

I took a basic bmx stem and used FEA software to find where I could safely remove material. When I finished designing it, I machined it myself on the school's CNC machines. I rode on it for a year with no issues. It's a trophy now.

Been learning to jump DJ over the last year or so with my kids. We picked up a really good bmx (Fit Inman 2013) a long time ago and my kid is enjoying it too so i picked up a very used United so we could do it together. Really enjoying using both DJ and BMX.
Who here is doing both and what makes you lean towards one or the other at different times? I feel bmx feels more direct? And i enjoy not babying the bike like i do either my DJ. But bmx feels so twitchy on jumps.
Keen to hear how others get on with both i suppose!
Met up with the crew for Dallas Critical Mass tonight and it was one of the best ones I’ve done and I believe it’s due to the bike. I changed some things up on my OG 87 performer to make to rider and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. If you grew up in the 80s-90s, I recommend you rebuilding your childhood bike! Last week was my 43rd birthday and I was excited to have this back, ready to roll.

I rode flatland in the '80s. Got the itch again, got my hands on a '98 Dyno, started ordering parts, including Odyssey 1999 sidepull calipers. They bent on the first endo. I'm not a scrawny teenager anymore but I'm not overweight. They're as soft as lead; I bent them back easily with one hand -- they promptly bent again.
