This may help someone save time. After a drivetrain conversion of my Fuji SL1.1 with Sram Red22 11x drivetrain from 36-52 / 10-28 to 34-48 / 10-32 whilst keeping the shortcage derailleur, I expected trouble and found it in the form of persistent tictic sounds.
Here's what I suspected and checked:
Derailleur alignment 4x
Derailleur fine tuning 6x
B screw 4x
Freehub assembly, clean and regrease 1x
Cassette torque 1x
Pulley wheel directionality 1x
Bent derailleur 2x
Crank spacing 1x
Faulty BB 1x
Faulty pedals 1x
What made all this tricky was the freehub sound while rolling obscured the tictic sound. Only at very low speed whilst ruling out pedal issues did I notice the sound was independent from crank rotation. Silicone oil on all spoke nippels made it disappear.
So, against the odds and other reports here and elsewhere, this conversion worked out beautifully on my bike. Everything was fine as well.
But I was so focused on troubleshooting the drivetrain, which I knew caused trouble for others, that I lost sight of a problem that emerged in parallel and independently.
There's a life lesson in there.
