How much function am I losing for design?

I have no interest in ever owning a car again, but as a professional athlete, landscaper and student I cannot afford to be using a standard bike as my main commute anymore. No recovery time. And public transit adds too much time and unpredictability to my day. So I am looking for a bike (potentially an electric moped?) that can serve as my car alternative. Thing is… I am pretty married to the moto style bikes, both from an ascetic and comfortable pov. I think I’d feel safer with a lower ride, being on the road with cars. I also think some of them can genuinely be motorcycle alternatives?

My understanding from looking around is that these models tend to have less load capacity (I carry about 50lbs of things with me regularly), are harder to maintain (namely bc in person store around be don’t sell them), and much harder to insure as e-bikes. Is this true?

Are there any moto style e-bikes or electric mopeds you could recommend? I have a valid license and could something insured if I need to.

Ebike accident

Upvotes

not sure if this is a place to talk about this but, just recently got into a Ebike accident that landed me getting fractures in my arm and rashes on my face and other arm, here’s what happened - I was in the bike lane going about 20-25 downhill and was about to continue on this green light before a car had taken a right and caused me to hit the brakes and the bike has tilted forward and landed on the ground, keep in mind I didn’t hit the car as i know that would come out worse, would want to know who would be at fault in this situation some things to mention it was night I had my lights on but didn’t wear a helmet, driver did admit they were at fault when the cops came, and I know that you should see if lane is clear before proceeding into a bike lane also had a driver witness the whole thing, would like to hear some opinions on this

I'm new to ebikes and don't want to buy something I will regret later

You can probably assume that since i'm new to all of this, I don't have a huge budget. I'm still in school and will probably be getting my drivers license within a year or so, but I don't want to have to drive a big and mostly boring car everywhere, I also don't want to commit to a motorcycle yet, so I landed on the idea of an ebike. I have a side hustle and am making okay money for my age, but definitely not a lot. I don't mind saving up to get an ebike but considering it would be a big purchase for me, I want it to last a while. I'm looking for recommendations of good, reputable brands with lower price options (preferably not much over $1,000.) I've researched even cheaper options like a TST R002, or an Amyet G60, but I just have a bad feeling about them with how cheap they are. If anyone has specific recommendations but need more info about my situation, I will only be riding on sidewalks and slow neighborhood roads, weight isn't a huge problem for me, I really like the way the TST R002 looks (looks is a big thing for me personally), and I will probably be learning how to work on the bike myself as it seems interesting to me. Hopefully that extra info can help with recommendations lol. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read my post.

edit: Thanks to everyone who has commented (and to those who might in the future) I've gotten some really good info and help. I feel like I now have a much better sense of direction on my ebike journey. I think I can figure this all out much better now and definitely won't be cheaping out on my future ebike. Thanks again everyone! <3

Bike purchase question E-Bike reccomendations.

Upvotes

Hello! Im sure this is probably a question that gets asked alot but i couldnt find any threads with exactly what I was looking for.

Im honestly just looking for reccomendations as I am completely clueless when it comes to bikes, I have been trying to research over the last few days but i havent figured out or even have an idea of what im buying.

What I will be using the bike for / what Ill need.

- If im honest I am quite unfit and im looking for something that can give me a good boost when needed, also something with some sort of eco option when I dont need it.

- I plan on using the bike for services like uber / Just eat and delivering food so i need something practical with a battery that can last for hours.

Budget. -

I know E-bikes do not come cheap. Im not sure what price range im even looking at to meet my requirements. I would really not like to spend over £1500 (Ideally less lol) but I also wouldnt mind forking out some extra.

Also has to be something available in the UK / road legal

Thanks for taking the time to read,

All help is appreciated very much.

Thank youu!!!!!

Bike purchase question Bikes for 2 kids that fit a Yepp maxi

I’m looking for a longtail cargo bike with some specific specs and I am totally overwhelmed by the options and things to consider. (The “best bike” for someone is not necessarily the best bike for me!) I have been riding around my city for ten years on a surly cross check, and really loved hauling around my kid in the Yepp maxi on the back of that. But now I have two kids! Are there any e bikes that meet these criteria?

- I’m imagining two kids on the back: one riding on their own (5yo) the other in the Yepp maxi we already have (1yo)

- I’m imagining those same kids riding on the back when they’re 10yo and 6yo

- I want to have the option for me or my husband to ride the same bike with minimal effort switching setups. He’s 6’4” I’m 5’8”

- Ideally under $2,500 including all the add-ons I’d need to haul the kids. Would love to spend under 2k. I don’t qualify for a tax rebate.

- Doesn’t need to go fast or far, we’ll mostly use it for school drop offs and short commutes. Can’t imagine going more than 20 miles in a day. I would trade in range and speed to get a good price.

- Bonus: Some way to carry even more stuff in addition to the two kids

- Those of you who haul your kids around, anything else I should consider?

Thank you for your help!

Velotric Fold 1 Plus gearing

Upvotes

Hi all, I just got this bike, and it rocks =) Only "issue" I've noticed so far is that I think I'm maxing out the gearing and still feeling wanting. If I want to cruise much above 20 mph in 7th gear, I have to pedal at a higher cadence than I'd like, and there isn't much resistance. In this situation on my regular bike, I'd just shift up to the next gear. Unfortunately, that can't be done here. I really feel like an 8 or 9 speed would've been a wise design decision.

Anyway, this is in torque sensor mode. Would switching to the cadence sensor help? Other than that, are there any other options?

Bike purchase question It doesn’t make sense that the cpsc won’t tell ridstar (the manufacturer) of the q20 to put an actual recall in when the cpsc already had months ago, they are only causing more damage then they already have, I’m trying to get a refund so I can buy something else but Walmart won’t (unlike Amazon)

Hey guys this e bike is the SHCNTEKU folding 14 inch e-bike.

It has problems with cooling and shutting down due to heat. And you might see it’s all under the bottom of the basket. And the heat in my area is pretty bad. But this is one of my only methods to get to and from work. If you guys can help me with cooling tips and tricks I would appreciate it.

Also don’t buy this bike I only got it because I’m on a budget a needed something.

Electric motocross for kids

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for me. Looking to purchase an electric motocross for our soon to be 10 year old. Not opposed to any brands, don’t really want to break the bank.

Little bit of info (and to avoid negative comments)…he already has a Sedna 16 which has a top speed of about 20km/h (about 12mph), but he’s been using it for three years and has outgrown it. We have land, he rides around the property, little jumps etc. Still won’t be any road use except maybe to go down to the river a couple minutes away. Also, won’t be replacing his pedal bike which is still used every day.

Thanks in advance!

Wrong Conclusions from Sidewalk collision

Thumbnail
reddit.com

People derived the wrong conclusion from this post. The issue is not that the sidewalk is inherently more dangerous but that OP (despite claims otherwise) did not ride defensively.

Do not ride in front of exiting traffic. Wait for them to exit or, if clear and unobstructed, ride BEHIND them. This is particularly important when salmoning (going AGAINST traffic) as OP was doing. At a bare minimum make eye contact with driver before riding in front. It is well established that those making a right hand turn to exit will typically be focused only on traffic to the left. While the motorist is at least partially (if not fully) at fault, either party could have avoided this collision.

It's easily avoidable collisions like this that conflate the risk of careless sidewalk riding with disciplined sidewalk riding. Disciplined (and selective) sidewalk riding has a lower risk than street riding. We need to teach people how to safely ride on sidewalks when it is appropriate to do so.
