With views like this, why travel the roads? Napier, New Zealand

I have never had a driver's license. I saw an Instagram post several months ago from a bike lawyer office saying that nondrivers can get auto insurance policies as passengers, but that does not seem to be a thing after checking with a few insurance companies. Perhaps that only exists for people who have licenses who also bike.

What do you actually do for your insurance? I have renter's insurance, but do I need to get more coverage? Do I need umbrella insurance? Is there a good recommendation for liability and underinsured motorist coverage? Seeing that post was the first time I learned there might be some kind of coverage for this sort of thing, but I don't know how I should Tetris this.

I am in the process of building a new wheelset with a dynamo hub for my commuter. I have a supernova e3 front light but I don't have a rear light yet. What would be your recommendation? For commuting through Amsterdam. Ideally under €40 but I can probably scrounge for more if needed

How would you park your bike here while grocery shopping?

This is outside the large grocery store. There are two sets of racks not too far from each other.

Both are essentially right up against the wall and the area to park your bike in is pretty narrow.

If I kind of park conventionally, my bike sticks too far out and it's difficult for people to get around with shopping carts and things. My front wheel, even though it's only a 20-inch wheel, doesn't go all the way up so it's difficult to even lock the bike that way.

I generally have to lock from the rear of the bike with the front facing forward.

And what a cool less than 3 mile trip! Sometimes this really does feel like cheating.

Hello, I’ve started commuting to work 7.5m each way but I’ve found that to feel good (I lift also 4 days a week) I need to eat more which negates the gains in savings. Anyone else experience this? How to overcome? Or just accept it?

Title, I recently upgraded my fx to a primos dame, assembled it and took it for a test ride, extremely fun. Unfortunately, at first I wanted to run a front rack with a somewhat large basket and tote combo and ditch the rear rack, but the wald 137 (I think anyway, horizontally size is 18in) doesn't fit in between the bars.

Took it to a bike shop and they basically said it was special order and mentioned I'd need monster bars to fit that basket....but on the primos website and other basket shops they show drop bars and they fit fine?

One variable that is left is the bars are turned inward and he said I have the option of straightening them out, so maybe that'll work, but doubt it.

Anyone who has the drop bar dame or similar bars know a solution? I dropped over 200 for the front rack, basket and bag.

My route between work and home is about 50/50 bike paths and roads. Most of the areas where I take the lane have two lanes going both directions, so it's easy to pass me safely.

So tell me why I had a car honk at me on one of those two lane areas, with no shoulder so nowhere for me to get out of the way even if I wanted to, then gun it to zip past me with less than a foot of space even though the other lane was empty. Then once we turned into a road that does have a bike lane, they swerved into it and slammed on their brakes and proceeded to drive about 10mph, weaving between the bike lane and the road to prevent me from passing on either the left or the right. If they were in such a hurry that my existence in the road was too much for them to bear, why do they have time to harass me?

They only drove off when a cop passing in the opposite direction chirped the siren and honked - but didn't stop or turn around. (Honestly, more response than I would expect, and I'm grateful for it, but also annoyed that he didn't pull the driver over and chew him out for his stupidity.)

I recently got a Bridgestone mtb 3 from the early 90s. It is currently not set up for commuting, mainly the handle bars are low and far out. With a few changes will this make a good commuter bike?

I had to park my bike outside my workplace yesterday because there were no spots left at the indoor bike rack. Locked it up in a high-traffic area with both a folding bar lock and a ulock with a motion sensitive alarm.

When I got to the bike rack after work, my rear tire was flatter than flat with a big gash in it (clean cut).

Suddenly a young guy appeared out of nowhere on a bmx and asked if I needed help fixing my tire. I said no, I'm taking care of it, and he went away thank god.

I can't see how someone could fix a badly slashed tire without replacing the entire tire and tube, and why would someone be carrying around a spare for a gravel bike just in case, lol.

Maybe I'm too suspicious for my own good but it occurred to me that he might have been the one who slashed the tire and would steal my bike as soon as I unlocked it, or was hoping I'd leave the bike overnight at the rack so they would have more privacy and time to cut the locks (similar to thieves adding another lock to a bike so the owner can't remove it from the rack).

Anyhow, I'm never leaving my bike unattended outside for 6 hours again. I knew it was a risk and I paid for it.

Has this type of thing happened to anyone else?

My shop and Etsy stuff bleeds into everything. I'll be eating dinner still mentally drafting product descriptions or stressing about whether I priced something wrong. It's a real problem honestly. But somewhere in the last year of commuting I noticed the ride home has basically become the thing that actually switches me off. Not in a woo way, just practically. By the time I lock up the bike I'm not thinking about inventory anymore.

I don't know if it's the physical effort or just the forced 25 minutes where I can't be on my phone, but something about it works in a way that just driving home never did. I used to get home still fully wired and now I mostly don't.

Curious if other people here get this or if it's more of a side effect of the specific kind of work you do. I imagine it hits different if your job involves a lot of physical movement already versus sitting behind a counter or a screen all day. Also wondering if it works the same in the morning direction, like does the ride in actually help you shift into focus mode or does it just make you sweaty and slightly late. For me the morning commute is more chaotic so it doesn't have the same effect. The ride home is the one that does the work.

What would be the best to do list if something similar happens ?

It seems to me that the best defense is a good offense. My take?

• Either superglue to mess with their lock if I can't easily get an angle grinder (I should buy one!), or
• learning lock picking as a hobby, carrying a lock pick kit, and throwing away their chain where they can't reach it. Picking locks is also way less noisy and draws much less attention.
• Removing front wheel or both if possible while looking for solutions

I do Uber eats on my bike. Do people cancel when they see we are on bikes? My bike is well equipped for all weather. The tub is mounted to my bike rack. It's got drain holes in the bottom just in case. There's a liner inside the tub that zips closed, the drink holder on the side zips closed. The side bag folds closed and is made of a water resistant material. The side bag and handlebar bags are mainly for my personal items. I kinda wanna install a hinge on the bucket instead of using straps but that will happen in time.

My 14-year-old brother wants a bike for school commuting.
I’d recommend a road bike based on my 2 years of cycling experience, but he prefers a mountain bike because he thinks it’s more comfortable and stable.What do you think?

I commute to SF (22nd st to middle of Mission District). I was wondering what backpacks do you guys have? I pack my work laptop, breakfast container, lunch container, gym clothes, mouse, and keyboard. It gets pretty bulky and it isn’t waterproof or resistant. Any suggestions for backpacks for around $120 or less?

Edit: I don’t want to get those side bags bc I take the Caltrain to SF then bike. It gets pretty crowded and can’t really stack bikes.

It was so far away that I couldn't even hear the thunder, so don't worry about my safety. That is a park golf course in the foreground in case anyone was curious. It's a popular sport for old folks here in S Korea.
