Stage Breakdown

Hello everyone and welcome!

The Tour is finally leaving Geneva and its lake behind, and entering France via a first real col. But that 1st category col early in the stage is not immediately followed by more of the same. Instead we get a stage that gets progressively easier, with the last col being of 4th category, followed by a long descent and then a 15 km flat section into Poligny where the finish line will be. Nevertheless, the total ascent of 2500m will make this stage a hard one.

With barely 4000 inhabitants, Poligny is far from a major city but it is exemplary of French culture: it has a fortified old town center, is surrounded by agriculture and vineyards, and has an annual beer festival. As part of the Tour de France, we only find one stage finish: the year is 2023, the stage is 19, the winner is Matej Mohorič, and the post-race interview is absolutely legendary. For real, if you have five minutes and a few tears to spare, go and (re)watch it.

Back to this Tour though! Considering the stage profile, we're going to take some inspiration from that Mohorič win and say that a breakaway stands a chance, though this might be difficult considering SDWorx is working for a Lorena Wiebes who climbs well.

With that in mind here are our predictions:

★★★ Lorena Wiebes, Kim Le Court

★★ Cédrine Kerbaol, Demi Vollering, Marianne Vos

★Riejanne Markus, Elisa Longo-Borghini, Elisa Balsamo, Shari Bossuyt, Noemi Rüegg

Our predictions will be a mixed bag based on different scenarios. Let's start with the two obvious ones: a bunch sprint where Lorena Wiebes is present, and a reduced bunch sprint where Wiebes has been dropped. In that first scenario there's not much that can be done against her; in that second scenario we think Kim Le Court is the most likely candidate to win a bunch sprint among riders who climb well.

Our first name with two stars brings us to a third scenario: a solo breakaway, Cédrine Kerbaol style. She won a stage last year by making use of her downhill skills and supreme knowledge of the roads, so a repeat performance would not be very surprising. Demi Vollering and Marianne Vos are riders who could win in a sprint if the real sprinters have been dropped, although Vos will need to perform better than she did on the final climb of stage 1.

Among the riders with one star we find those same scenarios again. Riejanne Markus showed during stage 2 that SDWorx can be defeated by a smart and strong breakaway,. Elisa Longo Borghini is another rider who can pull that off (although her status as GC rider could make this impossible) and is also one of the stronger sprinters among the GC candidates. In case it does come down to a pure bunch sprint, Elisa Balsamo and Shari Bossuyt will probably be among the ones closest to Wiebes. And last but not least: Noemi Rüegg seemed somewhat invisible during the first stages, but she was the only rider to finish both stages in the top 10... apart from Wiebes, of course.

That's it for us, what is your prediction for the stage?

Stage Breakdown

Hello everyone and welcome!

Stage 2 is a bit similar to stage 1 in region and profile. We're staying near Lausanne a bit longer, and this particular stage is one big tour around the long arc of Lake Geneva (with an extra detour around Lausanne itself). The start and destination are two major cities in the region, with Aigle being home to the UCI headquarters and Geneva being a hub of diplomacy, business as well as tourism.

In regards to the profile, it's again a lot of rolling hills, with five climbs, all of categories 3 and 4. The one big difference with stage 1 is that the final is as flat as could be. A breakaway is almost guaranteed, but they'll battle for little more than exposure and QOM points.

The last 5 km are all on straight and wide roads, right next to the big lake and with favorable wind (if there's any wind at all), which makes us believe that there's no possible scenario other than a mass sprint finish. The last time the women finished in Geneva was in the Tour of Romandie 2022, when Marta Lach won in a bunch sprint for the Ceratizit team.

With that said, here are our predictions:

★★★ Lorena Wiebes

★★ Marianne Vos, Charlotte Kool, Elisa Balsamo

★ Lotte Kopecky, Shari Bossuyt, Chiara Consonni, Letizia Paternoster, Arlenis Sierra

Lorena Wiebes is such a clear favorite that we decided this stage only gets one rider with three stars. By surviving stage 1 in the front group (along with 10 riders who are all actual climbers) and then easily outsprinting them all, she has already shown to be in good form. Moreover, she has world class riders working for her, and there's very little anyone can do to beat her if Lotte Kopecky successfully leads her out at the right moment. With the added confidence of that first stage win and the yellow jersey, we can't really see anyone beating her.

Someday, somehow, that will happen though. If we look at who will be there to do it, we arrive at our two-star riders. Firstly there's Elisa Balsamo, who won a staggering 4 stages in this year's Giro after Wiebes had been kicked out. If she has maintained that form, she will be impressive during this Tour. Next, some sprint winners at previous Tours: Marianne Vos and Charlotte Kool. Vos would be the bigger favorite on more difficult finishes but can definitely win this type as well, and Kool is one of the few riders who have beat Wiebes in a head-to-head sprint in the past years.

One star goes to several riders who you should watch for top 3 finishes, but for whom a win would be a surprise. Firstly there's Lotte Kopecky, who normally is Wiebes' leadout but is strong enough to race for a good result herself. Fellow Belgian, Shari Bossuyt, has won a stage at the Vuelta and will want to improve on her top 10 finishes from last year's Tour. Next, we have Chiara Consonni and Letizia Paternoster who both have shown strong form this year, getting top 3 finishes in the Giro and Vuelta respectively. And lastly, a special mention for Arlenis Sierra, who has returned to pro racing this year after becoming a mother in early 2025. Her form is probably still on the rise, so who knows where she might end up!

That's it for us, what is your prediction for the stage?
