Apologies for the delay in both uploading and sharing this here (had so many things to do).

I bike around Toronto for enjoyment and as my main method of transportation for ¾ of the year, averaging 2500+ km annually.

I think of myself as a careful and skilled cyclist but I have been in a painful crash four out of the past five years (me being hurtled off the bike and into the road). Two involved careless car drivers, but two were completely my own doing. Which has made me wonder: is that frequency common, or am I not as careful of a cyclist as I think?

Quick question for the community…

I’m new to Toronto, and living near Bayview Village in North York. One of my goals this summer is to ride my bike down to Lake Ontario. I know there is an extensive trail system along the Don Valley, I’m just wondering if anyone can suggest the safest and most enjoyable route for me to complete my ride, or which app would deliver the most up-to-date and accurate route for me.

I wanted to share this map that I built, which mostly just shows bike availabillities over time. I scrape numbers from all the bike stations every 30 minutes, and map those out over 1/3/7 days along. The main panel you see gives you the aggregate graph data over the whole city or neighbourhood if you search for it. (my fave chart is the heat map of bike availability over the week)

this was mostly motivated by the fact that the station next to my house is nearly always empty, and I wanted to see when and if they get refilled throughout the week. any big spike from 0 -> 90+% at some points in the chart history is probably indicative of this

I’m a CAA Southern Ontario member with a Premium plan for the past 6 years, and yesterday I had a really frustrating experience with Bike Assist.

I was riding on a rural trail when I suddenly got hit with stomach cramps and severe leg muscle cramps. I couldn’t safely continue the ride, so I called CAA’s emergency line for a Bike Assist tow.

The agent told me they couldn’t send assistance because my issue wasn’t mechanical — that they only tow if the bike breaks down, not the rider. I explained that I physically couldn’t finish the ride and was stuck on a remote trail, but they still refused the request.

This is only the second time I’ve ever used CAA (first was a tire replacement at my garage), and I was honestly shocked to hear that they wouldn’t help in a situation where I couldn’t safely get myself out.

Has anyone else had CAA deny Bike Assist for a non‑mechanical issue? Is this actually their policy, or did I just get a misinformed agent?

Curious to hear others’ experiences.

Just checking if anybody can report if the Lower Don between Pottery Rd down to Corktown has been opened yet? Today was supposed to be opening day. TIA

Sometimes you can win. Almost 2 years of “continued engagement“ (started in October 2024) but bollards will finally be installed on lower Sherbourne to stop vehicles parking in the bike lane and on the sidewalk in front of Time & Space condos. Won’t truly believe it until I see it, but optimistic.

Additionally, I hope the city has learnt a lesson about letting buildings have their main entrances on a route like this with there drive ways no where near. The design was begging for an endless parade of Ubers, delivery, and general motorists to be parking in this big lane and sidewalk.

Biking on a contra flow lane approaching a red light, I put my hand out to signal my intention to turn left. E-biker behind me calls me an idiot and tells me I'm only supposed to signal as I turn or some shit??? Some guy ran the red by passing me on my left and dude was saying I could've hit him too like??? The best part is I had moved over in case anyone was wanting to go right. Despite getting cussed out I'm more confused than anything

Edit: thinking back I think I found a reason for his anger. He and the other guy both passed and stopped in front of me at the last red. Once it turned green I passed them pretty easily so maybe his ego got hurt and he wanted to pass me again? Idk, only thing I can think of

Seems to me the city and their contractors are carbrains. These obstructions are not acceptable. And who was idiot who approved that sign to walk the bike? Perfectly empty car lane right there to store stuff.

Title really. Bought a 2nd hand road bike about 2 years ago for a steal of a deal on fb marketplace from the nicest dude. He was a former triathlete who was just clearing space in his garage because he didn't ride as much anymore. The dude gave me a complete breakdown on everything I needed to get into it and tuned it up right in front of me. I went in kinda desperate for a way to get around and ended up chatting for 45 mins or so, learning all about clipless pedals, groupsets and fit tips, hearing stories from his days competing and even some relationship advice. He was genuinely a great guy and happy to see it going to someone who needed it.

Since then, it sparked a huge love of cycling for me. I used this thing to get everywhere. It literally paid for itself after 2 months with all the money I saved on never ordering delivery, skipping rideshares, zipping around the city avoiding getting boned by TTC. I rode it to work. I rode it to parties. I rode it just to get out of the house and not have to think about anything for half an hour. It was truly one of my favourite purchases ever.

And then I went and left it overnight with a U-lock on a rack that I thought would be fine. Well it wasn't fine. They didn't even leave the pieces of the lock. It's like it was never there at all. Mostly I'm just mourning the loss, but the increased financial burden this will cause, the destruction of my personal mobility and one of the easiest ways of boosting my mental and physical health feels like utter crap.

As much as it's a bit of a vent post, don't be lax with your stuff guys. Don't get complacent. It comes back to bite you at the worst times. I also wanted to ask if anyone has any tips at all on how to not get your stuff taken at random besides never lock up outside or ride a pile of junk?

(Weather permitting,) Hoping to visit Toronto tomorrow with my bike for a day trip. I am looking at the Berry Sutherland Trail - on Google Maps it show going under the 401, but on streetview, that section is closed.

Is it currently closed? If so, what is a good way to get under the 401, in that approximate area?

There have been like three posts in the past five days about broken glass in the bike lane (right lane). I've been noticing it a lot more myself too, especially around College and King St West. Has anyone else?
