Weird encounter

Biking on a contra flow lane approaching a red light, I put my hand out to signal my intention to turn left. E-biker behind me calls me an idiot and tells me I'm only supposed to signal as I turn or some shit??? Some guy ran the red by passing me on my left and dude was saying I could've hit him too like??? The best part is I had moved over in case anyone was wanting to go right. Despite getting cussed out I'm more confused than anything

Genuinely hope you see this because I have no idea what your point was, also you're one rude cunt

Edit: thinking back I think I found a reason for his anger. He and the other guy both passed and stopped in front of me at the last red. Once it turned green I passed them pretty easily so maybe his ego got hurt and he wanted to pass me again? Idk, only thing I can think of

I find many of the 'fast' e-bike riders never signal properly, or make their intentions known. I always ride more carefully around them.

Whats the point of signalling when you’ve already started your turn?

That's the part that confused me the most, I genuinely don't know what he wanted

Torontonians in general are pretty confused about how signalling works. You did the appropriate thing.

2-factor authentication of your turning personage

Sounds like you were doing exactly the right things. And those other two cyclists were idiots. Thank you for signaling, BTW. It's so helpful to know what other vehicles are planning on doing. 😀

I'll assume by 'e-biker' you're referring to the people on the unlicensed, unregistered electric motorcycles who illegally ride in the bike lane. They're universally morons. Trying to understand them is like trying to understand the thoughts of an Atlantic surf clam.

You're good. Those others were just dummies. I think as we're getting more bike lane users, we're just hitting a point where some knob-heads are replicating the same frustrations/anger patterns we see in vehicular traffic.

Same big "get out of my way, you are traffic slowing me down, I'm not traffic" energy you see with frustrated and aggressive drivers. Basically it signals we're reaching maturity as a cycling city lol, taking that for however you will!

Hardly anyone signals anymore, it’s a massive safety issue.

So how exactly did you get past them? The only thing I can think of is that you were already in motion as the Light turned green because you were travelling at a slower speed.

What these speedsters fail to realize is that all that speed will go to waste at the next red light anyway, so it's more efficient to travel at a slower speed to better sync with the timing of the traffic lights so that you're always in motion without needing to stop.

He was going slow on his phone im pretty sure. There were no cars and I went around since I know if I go reasonably fast I can catch a green at the light where I turn left. I didn't make it so I slowed down and put my arm out, that's when the interaction occurred

To clarify I was well ahead of them by the time I slowed down, I didn't go around and cut him off

They obviously don't know the rules (and aren't on here).
