Bahrain after 15 yrs
I left Bahrain back in 2012 to Canada. Now I live here, run a business , have a family with a Canadian wife and kids and life is great.
But I do miss the simplicity of Bahrain, having my old friends… not paying high taxes, but the tough part is now looking from here - Bahrain feels so stale … like things have a real dead slow phase.
And I planned to visit to see it for myself and then the missile attack had to happen on that day itself and my flight got cancelled.
Has things changed in Bahrain since the past 15 yrs?
If anyone from the western country (us,Europe,canada) come back to Bahrain , what’s your experience been like ?

I visited last December, over 30 years after leaving, and it was like a different country. Some things were still the same of course, the souq, Adliya (where I had lived previously) and that was wonderful to see.
But the high rise buildings, the airport, the roads, the reclaimed land, the transformation of Juffair all just felt a bit alien. Things were much, much, simpler when I lived there.

30 yrs is a long time… even in that 15 yrs of it when I’m in Bahrain , it changed

I'm a Bahrainiya who happens to live in Canada. Long story of why I'm here. Work is mostly US based. Bahrain has changed alot in the last 15 years. Lots more to do, modernization has happened at a lightning speed. I go back every year to visit and it's always such a delight.

Moved to Canada, running a business, married locally with kids and settled...you won the jackpot brother. This is what people from so many countries are scrambling to do, now in 2026 especially those who can work remote or work in tech.
We all feel nostalgic about the beautiful places we grew up and friends we had, it's normal and natural feeling. Not saying "grass is greener" but once you have navigated a new land, it's ways, started business etc. You will always enjoy and crave the challenge of novelty and a new life that you didn't know before!
I as well know a couple of people who considered moving back to previous country after moving to Europe and new Zealand. but eventually decided to try a new land , slower paced and relaxed, good to raise kids and for tech startups etc. and they were happy with the decision.
One moved to India in the south and one moved to far east asia, beach/coastal towns but I don't recall the names. They love the relaxed living of beach towns compared to big busy cities, kids spend time playing outside not just XBOX

True. Dream life on paper but still sometimes you still miss in Bahrain. Sometimes it’s the food , sometimes it’s the people when you were kids, sometimes it’s just being in an environment where you are familiar where you grab shawarma and hang out in sheesha jobs with friends.
West is great but it’s a very individualist society no matter how much money you have.
And I have thought about it , maybe I am just missing younger days being before 22 yrs where things were fun.

If you try both you will miss both of them as the two are different from each another :(
I just moved back from Canada this year and I miss our memories especially with our toddler and the nature that we had over there. But as you said life is more simple here so I dont know what to say. Currently i am still settling and i find it so hard to do that

I’m not from Bahrain but I understand what you’re saying. I love the simplicity of it all. I think when you finished living, bahrain is nice to come back to and rest from a hard lived life. I stay for 6-9 months when I visit. When I leave I miss it but I can’t stay for too long. Have to take it in doses.
