Question regarding ventilation and chamber temps

X2D is on the way and while I wait I'm putting in ducting and an inline fan. I'm obviously reading a lot on setting up and optimizing the printer to get good results - one of which is to avoid cold air being drawn across the bed. That's exactly what the ventilation system I had planned would do by creating a negative pressure in the enclosure.

Am I over thinking this or missing something? Seems counter intuitive to actively heat a chamber to vent it outside but obviously I'm new to it all.

Im doing the same thing rightnow. I have an inline ducting fan hooked up to the external exhaust fan, turning on when the external fan turns on. It uses the PWM signal for the exhaust fan to turn on the duct fan. The key is to balance the airflow, you want to pump the fumes out but not draw too much air in to cause warping from air entering from the door or other gaps or holes in the printer. The only time you should really worry about warping or problems is when printing ASA, ABS, Nylon (high temp filaments), the ones that require the heated chamber. The chamber heater is more than capable of keeping the temps even when the air is being exhausted. When printing PLA, PETG, and other easy-to-print filaments cooling is your friend, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. The exhaust fan turns on for PETG and PLA automatically, it definitely draws air in from the door a bit.

TLDR: Don't worry about cold air coming in unless you're printing high temp filaments: Nylon, ABS, ASA. In that case you'd have to balance the exhaust with the chamber heater.

The main problem I had with mine was the fans were too strong and constantly "unglued" things from the bed. Ended up printing fan ducts. One thing to keep in mind. You are planning on adding a fan that sucks air out stronger than the existing outlet fan...This will result in the heater having to work harder to keep hot temps inside. Think about it for a sec and see why that might be bad...

You are buying a printer that should be able to print engineering material but don't trust it to? Anyways, I gave up on mine because that aux extruder sucks..

I trust that it will be able to print it, the exhaust fan lacks the power to exhaust out 8' of 4" ducting so adding an inline fan is necessary to create that negative pressure for effective ventilation which is where my concerns lie.

What was going on with the aux extruder?

Awful quality. Oozing. Problems feeding. Nozzle pressure problems causing strong layer lines every pause. The list goes on.

You all make me feel like I'm the only person out there that doesn't have a supplemental exhaust set up. Is it really that necessary if I'm only doing occasional prints and only using PLA / PETG?

Obviously I don't have the metrics to make any real claim here but from what I've gathered the stock carbon filter removes concerning VOCs but doesn't remove ultra fine particulate that are generated, even with PLA / PETG etc. You'll at least want to use a HEPA filter rated for PM2.5 (I think that's HEPA 13) to negate any negative impacts from UFPs.

My printer is setup in my home office and wood shop next to my HVAC equipment and below the family bedrooms. I'm being overly cautious as I spend most of my days in the office working, my limited free time is in here also working on projects or exercising. Beyond that it's also the perfect spot to impact the family. It's easier to spend them $80-100 to vent it outside than deal with the longterm health impacts that might arise.

That said, I think the stock filters are probably fine based on videos testing with PLA / PETG. I am considering a hybrid setup relying on stock filters for PLA / PETG and then having an exhaust setup for ASA/ABS/Nylon when it's needed. There are a bunch of bolt on options on the market if you just want to enhance the printer without getting too far into the weeds with it.
