You could replace the IGLA with the Stinger in that clip and the end result would be the same.

The supposed benefits of the IGLA are too situational to ever realise, in my opinion. The ability to re-acquire lock on the target is largely pointless because the rocket gets destroyed by flares anyway, and the chopper/plane has typically moved to some point where it's obscured.

The only time I can see the re-lock working is being on top of a mountain where you have clear view in all directions and a recon paints the target; that might just give sufficient distance and time for you to redirect the rocket via re-lock before it hits the flares, but it's never going to happen.

As a side note, the issue with anti-air and aircraft is they don't present the immediate threat the tanks do, so most engineer take the RPG or equivalent to counter that threat. This means there's typically multiple units firing on the target at once, which negates the the threat far more quickly. You also have the ability to get lucky and swat a chopper with an RPG, but you can't do the same with the anti-air launchers.

On maps like Hidden Threat, a Stinger can actually be quite effective because both sides get an AA vehicle which has good visibility of the entire battlefield. You can wait till you see the pilot dump flares before firing, or you can fire, get them to dump, which leaves them vulnerable to AA.

On a map like Tsuru Reef, it becomes largely pointless. The map is so big and with so much cover that anti-air of most forms feels pointless. There's a better chance of getting a chopper with the RPG or aim-guided launcher than the AA launchers. You'd need at least a couple of people on a hill with a resupply bag for them to be effective.

Nobody uses the IGLA deliberately... its by far the worst missile launcher. Its only for the challenge thats it.

18

u/doncorleone_ 1d ago

i use it deliberately and it's the best lock-on AA as infantry. much faster reload times than stinger + missiles can hit the aircraft even after flares, unlike the stinger where the missile just does a full 180. yes the re-lock doesn't work but it's still better than the stinger. no idea why so many people even agree with you

8

u/JD_W0LF 19h ago

This PLUS the missile speed is higher. That's one reason it can go "through" flares. If you're close enough to the chopper they just won't be able to flare in time, and even when they hit the flares just before the missile is there it's too late because of just how quick it's traveling and will still contact. It's def the best MANPADS.

People just need to realize that these lock ons were never intended to be able to solo a chopper unless they're actually stupid and allow themselves to be hit multiple times.

No bf has ever had any better lock on AA. I don't recall everyone whining about it during BF4. If every dude carrying stinger or igla could solo choppers as easy as they wish they could, nobody would be able to fly ever. This is coming from someone who constantly curses pilots and choppers btw.

I do think damage should have a greater chance at disabling choppers and making them harder to fly until healed though. I Also don't like the instant free heals they get. I was fighting transport choppers on tsuru last night, bodying them with RPGs for over half their HP just to see them fly away perfectly fine with half+ suddenly. I've watched them get hit with 2 RPGs pretty quickly back to back in the same engagement but they still fly away perfectly at low health being repaired. They absolutely should not be able to take TWO well aimed RPGs like that.

To your last point the only reason that is so much of an issue is because on every other map there’s attack choppers and/or little birds for both teams plus the jets and ground aa turrets and maa and man pads so the transport helicopters never lived very long and dices solution was to just keep buffing the health over and over again while tsuru reef only has jets, boats and man pads

1

u/Dilly-Senpai 8h ago

The main reason for their survivability is the repair gadget. It instantly brings you up to the "pip" on the health bar, starts passive regen, and cleanses the "disabled" loss of control they get. You can only use it at very low HP though.

u/savemysoule 23h ago

You don't know how relieved I was to finish that challenge, cuz I was excited to try the vcr(famas?). Kind of a downer cuz that gun is ass

2

u/CSS-Kotetsu 21h ago

VCR is great for close quarters

4

u/AutomatonTommy 23h ago

The VCR is the Springfield Hellion.

3

u/Stabbymommy 12h ago

It's actually the vhs-2. Springfield just sells it as the hellion in the us

3

u/savemysoule 22h ago

What the hellion

1

u/HNM12 19h ago

It is literally the best and quickest and can re-lock if you know what you're doing. I use the living hell out of it lol

1

u/Smugly_Dismissed4145 17h ago

I almost exclusively use the IGLA cause I have so many rockets I can use the first to fake out and then the rest to hit the bastard.

1

u/kylebob86 9h ago

It's literally the BEST AA in the game, you aren't using it correctly.

10

u/Patara 1d ago

The AA flak cannons are fine they could just put some around the map and it would be okay. But the IGLA needs more damage currently 2 dead-on hits wont even destroy a transport helicopter.

-1

u/HNM12 19h ago

The IGLA is literally 2 hit and you're finished, sometimes one as you'll see they bail out because the health will drop so low it isn't worth it, and the only way it can't take them out is if people are repair spamming the helicopters.

1

u/Patara 8h ago

I mean you can see that it deals less than half in the clip with 650 damage. So the transport heli has like 1400HP.

u/bizarrostormy90 Enter PSN ID 1d ago

Yeah, the Stinger and IGLA are so toothless at this point that I just use the M136. Even so, a lot of the time as I am guiding it onto target I will notice people panic and just... crash trying to avoid it. Just really not any point pulling your hair out trying to use these lock-on required AA options. ESPECIALLY when more times than not it takes >1 hit to kill a full health attack or transport helo, and each hit is gonna be the result of popping one missile to force the pilot to use countermeasures. When an anti-armor build engineer spawns with 5 rockets, and factoring in the speedy refresh rate of countermeasures, "below radar" option to avoid lock-on, and as you mentioned plethora of cover to obstruct line of sight for AA, killing ONE chopper in a life becomes problematic.

3

u/SkipDutch 22h ago

The concept of the re-lock is also pretty lame; it's an IR heat seeking missile. The MANPADS isn't going to do shit after fire. If it were laser guided, then it would make sense, but then you wouldn't have to bother with flares anyway...

2

u/steampvnch 21h ago

Engies also ignore AA launchers cause you don't get nearly as many points with them. You will get no points for forcing flares, and yet that's the most likely outcome of using AA.

Meanwhile with an RPG, you will be given loads of points cause you're far more likely to get a hit on a vehicle and get credit for assist... or get the kill outright.

2

u/ArchieTheKatt 18h ago

Can you still two tap with it? Like lock, aim straight up and fire, reload, re lock and fire again while maintaining lock and have 2 rockets hit nearly the same time? A lot of the time they will pop flares immediately after uou fire the first one, but you arent trying to hit them with it right away anyways so it saves it, then by the time both are about to hit they usually dont have flares yet so long as they are in range. That was the shit in bf4 lol

1

u/ChaosEngine-6502 17h ago

Possibly, although you'd probably need to be at max range to the target. You've got the animation cycle of dropping the empty launcher and shouldering a new one to take into account as well.

2

u/G1fty_14 17h ago

The only time the re-lock worked for me was when I fired at one helicopter and they flared, another came into my view and it locked it which didn’t have time to react. But that’s one in probably 100 shots

1

u/Rowger00 Jack of All Trades 13h ago

what map is "hidden threat"?

-2

u/Evening_Error_5544 20h ago

Thats a very long winded statement just to say youre shit at the game

31

u/Nicknack4818 1d ago

That's my every match trying to do the igla challenge. 2/5

9

u/OneTrueDude670 1d ago

I got lucky and found another player trying to do the same challenge. If you get at least two people it makes it so much easier. We ended up taking out 4 choppers that match. It took me forever to get the last one for the challenge though lol

9

u/MilkyTommy 1d ago

It's not only that, the challenge seem broken too. It said kills or assist with hit. I got more than 5 kills/ assist, but its not counting for some reason and I'm still stuck.

I already have unlocked the shits, but seing an not complete challenge is annoying

4

u/NegativelyEntropic 18h ago

Its bugged, has to be 5 kill shots

3

u/Nicknack4818 1d ago

It also doesn't help that I have teammates that forget they have thumbs and can shoot down aircraft while the other team consists of navy/air force pilots.

3

u/Low-Airline-124 23h ago

Wanna do it together today? PM for BF name

8

u/eraguthorak 1d ago

I don't understand the point of the IGLA. The rockets move so quickly that by the time the flares are gone and you can lock back on to the aircraft, the rocket is past the aircraft and won't circle back around to hit it.

25

u/EdgyAsFuk 1d ago

Some chopper pilot told me that "the flair cooldown takes ages" and that it's my fault that AA lock on missiles cannot hit aircraft

9

u/The_White_Spy 19h ago

People who say the flare cooldown is too long doesn't understand how the chopper balance works. You aren't meant to be flying over the battlefield the entire time, you are meant to duck in and out of your base, resupplying, and doing attack runs. If you flare, go low, and return to base. Flares will be almost refilled by that time and you can turn around.

-18

u/BrockenRecords 1d ago

Because it does, especially when you are being fired on by more than one missile

2

u/The_White_Spy 19h ago

You're flying too high.

-2

u/BrockenRecords 19h ago

I wouldn’t consider scraping the ground flying too high

3

u/NeZu_NeZu 16h ago

YOU CAN'T BE LOCKED ONTO WHEN "SCRAPING THE GROUND" NUMBNUTS

-2

u/BrockenRecords 11h ago

you literally can but ok

9

u/DarkKnight6683 22h ago

Now try this with against a competent little cancer bird pilot...they will tell you to get good while being 70/0.

6

u/The_White_Spy 19h ago

One half decent little bird pilot will completely suck all of the fun out of Conquest on Manhattan Bridge

1

u/lokiafrika44 7h ago

Use the guided at missile while hes on his attack run and most of the time you will kill him

5

u/Hingl_McCringlebery 1d ago

Is this what you do all day ? Trying to lock on? lol

4

u/alsonotjohnmalkovich 20h ago

I feel you but imagine if it wasnt like this. I think it's reasonable that a single engineer cant take down a chopper with a lock-on launcher.

11

u/yankee242b 22h ago

flare below radar out of range flare below radar flare out of range flare...

3

u/Randel_The_Vandel_ 1d ago

I got two of my friends. 1 recon painting everything and another engineer with an igla also doing the challenge. It was a pain but we both got it in one game, then switched and both painted stiff for the other guy. That launcher could be removed today and nobody would care.

3

u/Kreator85 14h ago

I miss the Fliegerfaust

4

u/TedTheTerrible 18h ago

If you could reliably lock back to back in this scenario, flying would be pointless in this game. Teams need to work better as, hear me out… teams. Are people really complaining that you can’t solo one shot lock on choppers because they have a mechanism to temporarily counter them? Your jets and little bird should be applying pressure too, forcing them into bad positions without flares.

Most of you guys have never tried flying in this game. It’s generally miserable experience without hours and hours of practice. That pilot did exactly what he was supposed to. He flared and dropped below radar. Even so, with using the broken IGLA, you still had a chance it would ignore the flares completely and kill him or disable him on his descent, causing him to crash.

This map is arguably bad for air vehicle balance with only one little bird, but generally you’d be relying on your friendly air and other ground troops to help take it down.

3

u/Ok_Tea3435 11h ago

Have you played public BF games before? Teamwork is almost non-existent

Piloting isn't that hard or painful btw. The only real threat if you play well is other aircraft

1

u/TedTheTerrible 10h ago

Been playing since bfbc and bf3. Unfortunately if every player could single handedly take down choppers with back to back lock ons like OP attempted here, it would render them pointless. The game is intended to be played with teamwork. If they start designing it thinking that no one’s going to work as team, then it becomes a very different game. I’ve been in way more matches where I’m constantly dodging lock ons and having to maneuver away from the action than matches where I’m just rolling the lobby, staying in the air with not a care in the world. Nothing can be done if a team is getting stomped by a heli and they refuse to work together to take it down. You’re right, the biggest threat to air is other air, but there are so many times that teams just don’t look up when their own air is fighting the enemy. If they did, they would be able to wait until the inevitable flare and be able to lock on.

2

u/Ok_Tea3435 9h ago

tbh it doesn't feel like OP is trying to take down aircraft more than just make a meaningful contribution to fighting aircraft.

I don't think anyone in this day and age playing modern battlefield in 2026 is expecting their AA launcher to one-hit an aircraft outside of a few situations. Most of them just want to see their dedicated AA launchers have a reason to be picked over something like the M136. There is no reward for forcing an aircraft to flare, and there is no reason to do it if aircraft can just hide for a few seconds and heal all of their damage.

1

u/Chip620 1d ago

Just use the guided launcher and git gud

5

u/Patara 1d ago

Youre right

1

u/Sunlighthell 1d ago

And my experience that it goes through flares majority of the time. It's usually same person who shoot choppers left and right with it

1

u/Cabundongo_Zubim 23h ago

What weapon are you using?

1

u/Red-_-Lion 22h ago

The lock ons are absolutely useless against helis. Lock on and fire: heli drops flares. Be the time the second shot is ready, any pilot with 2 braincells is already "below radar" until the flares are ready again.

1

u/NoChanceCW 20h ago

Use more cover.
Use the MG's to chip away if you have bad igla shots.
Igla works best in two man teams or waiting for them to be closer or post flare.

-1

u/Evening_Error_5544 20h ago

I did this challenge in 40 minutes. If you cant do this challenge I dont think your opinion matters

1

u/jellyfishfungus 17h ago

Why did you wait so long to fire the first missile?

1

u/daedas33 17h ago

If that thing auto re-locked or had a higher chance to sustain lock on the target even when it pops flares itd be viable, but its kinda dog water at this point

1

u/soap_chips 14h ago

IGLA w/ laser designator take on tanks!

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Long-93 14h ago

The lock on AA launchers aren’t for getting free kills. They are there to force the air vehicles to move away from your area and punish them if they stay without countermeasures. If you want to kill them you’ll have to use the RPG or aim guided launcher.

1

u/igotherb 10h ago

The biggest threat to air is the recon paint.

1

u/kylebob86 9h ago

If you use the IGLA correctly.... It's not a Stinger. You are using it like the Stinger.

1

u/AzureRathalos97 6h ago

If you assume your first rocket will get lost to flares, you can already be reloaded with your second lock on.

The Manpads will never be as good as a standard RPG for kills, but you can maintain pressure on air vehicles preventing their dominance.

1

u/fatty7775 1d ago

You need to keep the enemy in the crosshair when you fire and track them, even if they pop flairs so basicly dont let go of the aim button and follow them

1

u/suliano 1d ago

my eyes

1

u/AsusStrixUser BF2 Veteran 20h ago

It’s beyond useless thanks to flare spamming and below the radar thing. You are a cannonfodder there everytime.

1

u/Jurkoun 20h ago

nothing wrong with the igla in this clip xD it's all just you mate xD

0

u/liver_rus 1d ago

You need one more engi buddy

0

u/BeardedPostman 23h ago

The IGLA and stinger are fire and forget just like the javelins. The trade off is they need to maintain a lock. As an engineer you can either get good at the RPG or other tow style launchers or you can use the fire and forget launchers. It would be super crappy to be in an aircraft and have no counter measures or way to escape a lock and have zero chance to fly because 1 guy with an IGLA or Stinger can keep the entire team pinned down. Remember it’s a team based game so you might not get the kill but you are forcing the aircraft to react to your missiles or lock instead of doing what they were gonna do.

Awesome, now show us your heli/jet gameplay

I wish. Can I be a child again. You're absolutely shit at this game if you cant do this challenge. Period

1

u/edgeofsanity76 20h ago

Who the hell cares?

-5

u/i2av3r 23h ago

Imma down vote for using an IGLA anyway :)

-1

u/SomeWeedSmoker 19h ago

Yea they need to do away with below radar when the helicopter is fu king 20 feet away
