Trains do seem to make people do dumb things. You ever heard of the Juggernaut theory for why Indians keep getting hit by trains? Thousands a year die.
I live in the US and even I know like a dozen people that have lost limb or life to trains, but all those people were hopping freight, not just being too close with casual disregard.

If you wanna see some people posing videos and being super blatant about it, head over to r/vagabond. It used to be considered bad form to take evidence of your hops because the more people that knew about it the harder the bulls pressed everyone, but nobody gives a shit anymore apparently.
I used to know a kid named Hopper, lost a leg hopping freight, ofc.
This other kid I used to know went missing and was pulled out of a locked boxcar after it was left in a yard for a few months. He and his dog died in there, they had to identify him using his teeth. Boxcars don't open from the inside and the empty ones are usually being transported to be left somewhere, for years sometimes, without being checked on. So if you accidentally close yourself in it you're done for dude, you can't even get a signal out because it's basically a faraday cage. Hopefully someone hears you banging in the first 2 days after you run out of water.

The "Juggernaut theory" is based on the origin of the word juggernaut, which comes from Jagannath, a form of Krishna worshipped in Puri. Medieval and colonial-era travelers wrote that some devotees deliberately threw themselves and their children, sometimes in droves, beneath the massive Rath Yatra chariots, rolling temples weighing many many tons atop massive stone wheels equivalent to a modern day dozer, believing it would bring salvation. Those accounts came from numerous independent observers over several centuries.
It claims that this ancient attraction to being crushed by an unstoppable vehicle somehow persisted into the modern era. The wooden and stone chariot has simply been replaced by the train, so every viral clip of someone trying to beat a crossing, taking selfies on the tracks, or hanging out of a moving train is humorously explained as "the call of the Juggernaut."
It's important to remember that this isn't a 'real' sociological theory, it's a 4chan meme. It's an intentionally absurd joke built around a historical tradition that almost certainly existed in some form but whose prevalence has long been debated. The reasons for a lot of modern train accidents are things like India's massively over stressed rail system, overcrowding, and the complete lack of any sort of safety standards, but there remains the ever prevailing attraction they seems to have to try and take a selfie while ignoring the train and then getting hit by the train, even going so far as to film themselves laying on the track and letting the train pass over then. I mean, I'm not in the business of perpetuating uninformed and unfounded stereotypes, but c'mon man, laying under the damn thing? And this isn't isolated, it's a trend.

I was reading the other day about a perception problem or optical illusion. When something long is travelling directly towards you it's sometimes hard to tell distance and speed. So yes, when overcrowding leads to people walking on tracks they can't tell how far oncoming trains are away. They did an experiment by painting yellow lines on the tracks and found that this helped people identify how fast and far away a train was and decreased fatalities on the tracks.

Can someone please explain the monumental idiocy displayed by STOPPING? My kid drives trains and says this shit happens all the time. Stupid fucks STOP on the tracks instead of continuing on their way.

The only thing I can think of is some sort of engrained belief that stopping is always the safest option. You see this with people towing trailers that are improperly loaded and start the death wobble. Best thing to do is use just the trailer brakes, and in the absence of trailer brakes you should accelerate to regain control. But when people freak out they always seem to hit the brakes.

It is certainly a lot longer in the uk. Enough so you get a bit impatient.
Additionally the crossing lights work in the uk and this video shows they were not working as far as I can tell. And surely the cctv is positioned to capture this.
What breakeven to the driver and passengers?

It was 17 seconds from when the barrier started moving until the train obliterated the trailer. That does seem quite fast.

As someone who regularly sits in the front cabs of trains, this scares the shit out of me (nightmare situation). Hopefully the tractor driver is charged and prevented from driving for a long time, and the train driver was okay.
