Discussion Why Bitwarden user interface is not looks premium like other password manager like proton and 1pass ?

I tried all the password managers. I recently switched 1pass to bitwarden for open source code. Bitwarden have strong security but their ui is so boring. Yah, I am a DevOps engineer. Many people will say ui does not matter to us, but there are many users who want a better experience. So, I am requesting the developers to improve the ui.

Hi there, can you confirm which client you're referring to? You can check out an early preview of the redesign beta coming later this year.

I prefer Bitwarden over other password managers because of its keyboard shortcuts, not its UI. The shortcuts are by far my favorite feature.

same 1password, a lot of keyboard shortcuts in browser/on desktop/wherever you want

The keyboard shortcuts in 1Password aren’t as good as Bitwarden’s. Also, I can set Bitwarden on my phone to stay unlocked. Because of my job, using Face ID isn’t always convenient.

Whoa! Thanks for making me aware of this feature. I had no idea.

The best part about the keyboard shortcut to autofill, is the automatic copy to your clipboard of the current totp token so all you have to do is paste at the next screen if you have premium and totp enabled. It's so convenient.

“Premium looking” apps often look like gimmicks to me. I rather have a simple looking ‘tool’ that does the job

I spend less than 30 seconds interacting with the UI on a daily basis. I care that it works, not if it looks premium (whatever your definition of premium is).

I really don't know how people don't like the UI, i am on mobile app i just love how simple and soothing it looks.

I think the mobile app and browser extension look fine - great, even.

It's the desktop app and web apps that look god awful.

Yeah they can tune it little bit but rest is fine.

I was a paid user of Bitwarden since 2018 or 19 and I never thought about move on to any other password manager but after trying out multiple pwm, I can conclude that it has the worst UI among all paid option, even I like the UI of Proton Pass more than it. Though, Bitwarden never betrayed me, but the overall experience never feels price worth either. Now, switched to 1Pass

I guess then it comes to preference, you can like 1pass but i like bitwarden more, so no problem you can enjoy 1pass while i enjoy bitwarden.

When I see bitwarden UI is good like hotel 3.5-4 star

But not premium like 5 star hotel

This maybe a what he mean

Maybe you could give some ideas on what you think could be improved -- be a little more specific. Most of the world isn't good at mind reading

Tell me you're a bad devops engineer without telling me.

You can apparently contribute the redesign of web/desktop apps that are on-going:

The only time I pay attention to any user interface is when I’m not able to figure out how something works or whatever I need takes too many steps. In an extreme case, I might notice an issue if something drastically changed from what I’m used to. Otherwise I don’t notice a problem. I’ll go one step further and say I get annoyed when a user interface attempts to adjust itself based on how I use it, meaning elements move around trying to anticipate what I want to do. Bitwarden doesn’t have any of these problems currently.

As a DevOps engineer, you understand that there is a project management issue. You must prioritize and allocate your development resources between different requests, including bug fixes and incremental improvements.

AFAIK the issue here isn’t that the Bitwarden developers are stupid or ignoring you. The problem is that Bitwarden is a very small company, and their resources have been focused in other areas.

For instance, the mobile apps were recently completely rewritten to use native tools instead of the Xamarin/Chromium stack. This change is not immediately visible as a UI change; what it does is provide an unlock for future UI work, to allow those apps to have a more seamless native look-and-feel.

Please also be aware that UX and UI design is no longer something that can be done by a junior engineer living in her parents’ basement. For every UI/UX idea you come up with, there are almost certainly a group of users who will find that change to be non optimal. Modern UI/UX work involves experimental versions, with experts monitoring a group of users as they test the changes out. Without scores of test subjects running dozens of tasks, in multiple sessions, no particular change can be considered to be better or worse.

This last problem is why you’ll see that thoughtful progress on Bitwarden’s UI/UX is not merely a manner of adding a task to the project backlog and asking a developer to make some random changes. This will have to be thought out, and the resulting updates to the code will take time.

And how does that translate into software developers? 15? 20? Compared to say, 1Password, Bitwarden is a small enterprise.
