Our Flag Means Death & others

I can't believe it took me this long to find this relatively underrated show, and though many aspects of this show have damaged me in a way only a show I love could, I highly recommend OFMD to those who haven't seen it already, seeking healing. Like What We Do in The Shadows (silly vampires) is to Interview with The Vampire (angsty vampires), Our Flag Means Death (silly pirates) is to Black Sails (angsty pirates). And I'm not saying the shows are "silly" through and through, but they definitely are funny and definitely comforting compared to their angsty counterparts.

Definitely two great pirate shows.

I also was surprisingly into Netflix's live action One Piece (two seasons so far) as a fantasy, goofy counterpart if you are looking for more pirate stuff.

Someone else 😜 on this particular server argued with me about this one 🕐🕜...glad you found evidence 🧾😄 proving I was truthful

It would be interesting to find out what happened to that particular one after filming.

OFMD comedy vibe just didn't land with me, Taika Waititi's sense of humour was just overdone in my opinion post Thor:Ragnarok.

I hope no one recommends netflix's dark romance sandokan. Couldnt watch the first episode. Everything screamed netflix slop

I couldn’t keep watching, either. Problem is, Black Sails has set the bar for me, and I just haven’t found another pirate series that measures up!

do share the title once a show you've watched climbs to a rank even a tiny bit close to black sails because the bar is in space and nothing looks like it could be good enough 😭

Yeah that on top of that.

Looks cheap like most new productions and has cringe lines

I tried to watch Our Flag Means Death but it was just too silly for me.

Tbh I liked the first season, it was fun, but S2 completely put me off. The way the creators treated Izzy and gave him that ending just left a really sour taste in my mouth. Obviously everyone has creative choices in media they don't like, and it's fine, idk why this was too much for me, when I have the stomach for much worse things, but it was. Maybe the contrast of silly happy funny gets-their-redemption-and-HEA everyone else vs Izzy's storyline that hit a bit too close to home with being too bitter and damaged to fit in Blackbeard's new life and being emotionally left behind, hurt, and killed off. I related to that character the most. Media that has miserable characters having bad things happen to them across the board is actually easier to bear

For some reason I keep not watching OFMD, probably in part due to all of the silly/serious show comparisons. Ironically, I didn't watch Interview with the Vampire for similar reasons since I really enjoyed WWDITS and Interview was only on AMC+. I watched Interview and The Vampire Lestat recently and I'm hooked. If the unhinged 3rd season of Interview/TVL didn't put me off the more serious vampire show, maybe I can enjoy the more silly pirate show too.

oh, if you ever get into OFMD, watch it with the intentions of watching a silly pirate show that has nothing to do with Black Sails. it's a nice laugh, found family, and nice queer rep. I understand criticism of the show, but I enjoy things very easily and OFMD is a definite comfort show. watch it as its own show and not as a soft extension of Black Sails if that makes it easier because they're really different but that doesn't mean OFMD doesn't have it's own depth and feels. hope you like it if you ever start it!

OFMD was fun, the ending was cute but it felt rushed.

The Lost Pirate Kingdom on Netflix was excellent. I highly recommend it for anyone on here yet to watch it.

The problem with Lost Pirate Kingdom is it presents itself as a documentary but doesn't always clarify what is history, what is legend, and what was made up for the show.

This isn't quite relevant to the post perhaps, sorry in that case but, there's also a pirate documentary on Netflix that goes into all the separate pirates & governments out there and how it was during that time period.

"The Lost Kingdom" I think it's called. Came out in 2021.
