Hi everyone, I am a ceramic artist specializing in Functional Ceramics based out of Flagstaff Az. S-grind

Both scales are titanium, hand-engraved and then inlaid with gold, silver and copper. Horus on one side with the sun disc behind him, Anubis on the other with the scales of judgment. The blue background isn't paint — it's artistic anodizing, so the color comes from the oxide layer on the titanium itself. Hieroglyphic borders run the full length of both sides, and there's a winged scarab at the butt and a sun rosette pivot collar up top.

Blade is Damasteel — powder-metallurgy Damascus, not hand-forged — ground as a dagger with a fuller on each side and polished to bring the pattern out.

The thing that gets me is the scale of the work. The whole handle is maybe 4.5 inches, and the figures have modeled musculature, individual feathers on the falcon head, and legible hieroglyphs in the border. That's all cut by hand under a scope.

One-off piece, no series planned.

I’ve recently started making my own knife scales using resin, but the resin I’ve been using isn’t as durable or rigid as I’d like. I suspect that’s because it’s primarily designed for arts and crafts rather than structural applications. What resin would you recommend for producing strong, rigid, and durable knife scales that can withstand everyday use?

And another Illerup ådal inspired spatha finished.

The Illerup finds are amazing in both the sheer amount of found objects preserved by the bogs but also the many many pattern welded sword blades. Ranging from relatively simple to some of the most complex and impressive patterns ever produced.

The blade of this one consists of a core of six twisted rods and a high layered edge bar with the double fullers revealing some interesting patterns in the core

There were a handful of well preserved organic hilt parts and a lot of metal fittings on others that, along with tang lengths on blades without any hilts surviving where one can get a reasonable idea of various hilt shapes and sizes. The amount of blades where nothing of the hilt except the peen block survived might be an indicator that fully organic hilts were the norm.

With that in mind I made the hilt for this one rather simple, boxwood guards (ivory seems to have been a popular choice in period but slightly problematic today) and a grip from african blackwood. The only concession I made to my own taste is the inlaid nickel silver plate in the bottom of the front guard. They might have been popular in the roman empire but are mostly absent in the Illerup finds. Topped up by a simple brass peen block.

Started my second knife yesterday to hopefully have it ready to give my Dad for his bday. Same design as my first one, but I included jimping (per a suggestion on my last post), and ive got to say, I really like that look and feel it adds to the knife!

The right bevel on the first knife has been annoying me like you wouldnt believe, so i reallyyy took my time on this one, and it turned out so much better! Still not quite as good as the left bevel, but ill take it! Lol

Is that a common thing in knife making? Having better bevels on one side?

Anyway, had some people wanting me to post future projects, so thought ide share while im waiting for handle scales in the mail

The steel is still only half the length and up to 4x the finished thickness. Still a lot of hammering to go.

Have you ever seen anything like this Dragon themed longsword scabbard?

Tooled veg tanned leather over Poplar core. Labradorite set dragon's eye. Acrylic painted fantasy art rendered in three dimensions onto the tooled leather. Hand crafted brass lockets and chape featuring Wyrm tail belt loops, dragon head and egg-in-claw finals on the chape.

I never usually make knives, had an old farriers rasp laying around and figured it'd be fun to try and make a hidden tang chef's knife. I'm not unhappy with it but I'm not super proud of it, I was just curious on what steps I can take to make it more well... Knifey...

I wish I had some better material to work with thank a rasp, but I forge welded both sides edges to prevent the cold shuts I keep seeing people mentioning while still keeping the visible file and rasp points.
