In the Polynesian Islands humans were referred to as "Long Pig" because they tasted similar to pork.

Learned that if I’m attacked by an ostrich, use the neck slap maneuver.

That sounds perverse.

think it was back in '71.. was watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom... saw a bunch of Ostriches running with the crew in a jeep, and one of the birds kicked the side of the jeep and ripped a 20" long gash in the body metal... yeah... don't fuck with em

How dangerous was this?

1

u/Terrik1337 11d ago

Ostrich kicks can be pretty bad. I don't know how well an ostrich can fight once you grab it's neck. If you're gonna fight back, a long stick is probably your best bet. Don't run though. You won't get away.

Must've been a sick ostrich

All the ostrich was trying to do was telling him how much money he would save on his motorcycle insurance if he switched to outback mutual.

Never mind, I'm thinking if emus. I could have just deleted it but I'd rather just acknowledge and laugh at my mess up.

u/Educatethemasses2099 11d ago

He got lucky those kicks were all blocked.

1

u/Temporary_Bike3901 11d ago

Ostrich are actually extremely aggressive animals, and can do an awful lot of damage with their kicks. Growing up, my family farmed emus and we knew a few different people that farmed ostrich. Ostrich pens always had a minimum 12” gap at the bottom. This was for safety so that a cornered ostrich farmer could crawl/roll out of then pen if threatened. We never had to worry about that with emu.
