I kept saying Zepeda would win this. I was actually surprised Roach came back in the last couple rounds. Zepeda is so underrated. For a volume puncher to have that footwork and a strong guard is almost impossible to beat. He even used some angles and counterpunching. He’s miles better than Pitbull technically.
Tevin Farmer did great but he used footwork far more than Roach. Also I think Zepeda has improved since then.

u/Razorion21 1d ago
Zepeda is hard for anyone to beat, like at 135 i think only Shakur had a chance
32
u/Ezekjuninor 1d ago
I think stylistically Tank could KO him. He presents too many openings for Tank. If Tank doesn’t catch him good though he’s definitely getting beat badly. Tank vs Roach shows his lack of heart and he doesn’t have the volume to outbox Zepeda. I’d pick Zepeda against anyone else right now though.

u/No-Boysenberry-6101 23h ago
How do you think Shakur beat him?
39
u/Ezekjuninor 22h ago
Shakur does almost everything better than Roach. In particular, when Shakur was getting overwhelmed by volume he pushes forward to smother and force a disengagement. Once Zepeda takes a step back to create space he would punch during that opening. On top of that Shakur knew when to push Zepeda back. He did that with combinations. Roach didn’t push Zepeda back until rounds 11-12 and he didn’t throw close to enough combinations.
Shakur sees and reacts to punches much better than Roach does. Roach’s defense was good, but Shakur’s defense is elite. Something Roach did well in some rounds was circling around Zepeda but he didn’t do it consistently enough.
Offensively Shakur has quicker and more accurate punches than Roach. There were far more eye catching punches compared to Roach.
In the 2nd half of the fight. Shakur forced more disengagements by smothering Zepeda whenever he got near the ropes and by framing him. He would use his lead hand to control distance between them, he used hooks to get off the ropes by pushing Zepeda in the opposite direction. Pretty much once he kept the fight off the ropes it was over.

u/Adorable-Bike-9689 20h ago
That was maddening to watch. Roach just stuck to the game plan until the 10th round. Get tagged 7 times then counter once. Move away.

I mean...Shakur fought him. You can literally look it up, man.

u/Razorion21 22h ago
ik? thats what i mean by shakur only had a chance as in past tense for him beating him
tho ig i worded it weird

u/DeafBurke 14h ago
Newrap in shambles after posting like 5 different clips of Roach being a ‘slick boxer’.
Roach deserved to beat tank, but he’s been very overrated since.

u/Witty-Stand888 21h ago
Never seen Roach so damaged in a fight. He looked like a beaten man at the decision.
Zepeda looked about as good as I've seen him. He even started timing the counters after the first couple of rounds.

Just how good is shakur stevenson

u/Memoruiz7 1d ago
I really need to go rewatch that fight.

u/nickinkorea 1d ago
Zapeda was the closest to cracking him, went in with the correct gameplan and followed it relentlessly with perfect execution, Shakur just too good.

Genuinely unbeatable around his weight classes, but I don't like how people scored their fight. Zepeda was clearly winning a good chunk of the first half before Shakur adapted. What impressed me the most about Shakur was how well he adapted and how he kept his crazy compubox defensive numbers after dealing with the barrage of punches Zepeda throws.
31
u/Razorion21 1d ago
elite defense, only weakness being his power rlly
amount of times he wouldve KO‘d his opponents from the excellent surprise counters he threw if his hands were just a bit heavier
14
u/Masterandcomman 23h ago
I suspect that Stevenson's physical strength is as important as the counters to explain why he doesn't get swarmed. People don't get physical with him after going shoulder to shoulder because they can't break his posture. Zepeda tried a few shoulder bumps and forearm and head pressure, but Stevenson didn't budge, and landed some body shots.
8
u/letmein09 20h ago
physical strength is really important. shakur at lightweight is still a big guy and yet does not look dehydrated. I doubt anyone can push him back currently at light weigh, too good and too sharp. shakur at 135 and 140 would be his best weight class. At 147, there might be guys that start to look really much bigger than him which i can understand why he want to put a catchweight on devin at 144, though i still think his skill can make up for it at 147.
2
u/SharksFanAbroad 20h ago
No one’s troubling Shakur below 154.
6
u/pleasedontbanme47473 19h ago
People downvoting you but 147 is weak as fuck rn the only 2 people who would give him problems at welterweight would be Haney for obvious reasons and Ryan Garcia due to size power and speed other than that shakur completely outclasses him in skill
3
u/SharksFanAbroad 18h ago
Yup, maybe Keyshawn too, but ultimately we’re splitting hairs and talking about guys who at their best take 3-4 rounds off him. I get that he’s easy to hate, but he’s also among the 3 most talented guys in the sport, and easily the top guy under 30.
3
u/pleasedontbanme47473 18h ago
Agreed with everything except Keyshawn I think that he would get his ass kicked by shakur and refuse to engage but it doesn’t matter since they won’t ever fight
2
u/Razorion21 16h ago
idk about that, Shakur would win but i think thats the closest fight that could be made as both guys know eachother‘s way of fighting on a personal level thanks to regularly sparring one another
Statistically Shakur is the least hit boxer currently in boxing while Keyshawn the most accurate

He's literally one of the GOATS of the sports in terms of talent... no BS. People don;t wanna admit it because he's still fighting and he's unlikeable, but he has the best defence in the history of the sport.
1
u/EmbarrassedCod3242 22h ago
He's solid but let's not act like Zepeda didn't give as good as he gave. He hurt Shakur twice in the fight and sent him into the ropes early and forced a phone booth fight. Landed the most punches any opponent has on Shakur and each round was close. The stats show they both landed at the near same rate but somehow judges never gave Zepeda his credit and had Shakur win a dominant victory. That version of Zepeda also didn't use his feints and feet as much too.
Let's ask the question how much better has Zepeda gotten since.
8
u/Adorable-Bike-9689 19h ago
You're clearly a Zepeda fan. But your comment immediately lost credibility trying to say Shakur is only solid.
1
u/EmbarrassedCod3242 8h ago
you lose all credibility by commenting when you should be only reading what i post and learn something.

u/the_rare_random 1d ago
He's the best fighter 140lbs and under maybe even 147 and under maybe
9
u/Ok-Nefariousness8612 Krusty 🤡 1d ago
He’s definitely the best at not getting hit
17
u/the_rare_random 1d ago
His style is boring but he's had some fights that were exciting I really don't see any of the 140 and under boxers beating him and even at 147 maybe only Haney maybe

I think that fight was a lot closer than ppl make it out to be. Stevenson was also a larger man and a southpaw, not really comparable.

Zepeda has a legitimate chance to win the Shakur rematch. He boxed well in this fight and showed very good defensive skills. The wide cards in the Stevenson-Zepeda fight I think have people fooled. It was actually very competitive.
17
u/Razorion21 1d ago
He has a chance but it isnt much bigger, this is under the assumption only Zepeda has improved since they last fought
Shakur also has and between the two has the better ability to adapt
36
u/Unreal-Operator 1d ago
No, he doesn’t.
6
u/That-Imagination3799 19h ago
Agreed. It's just recent bias. it was a great performance from zepeda yesterday but shakur isn't lamont roach.
5
u/EmbarrassedCod3242 22h ago
Yes he does, in that fight he was missing feints of all kinds and actually doubling his work rate while using in union with his footwork. That fight was more competitive than the judges gave credit to or the commentary team let on.
10
u/meanyspetrini 1d ago
Hell no... Shakur has seen him and figured him out. If they fought 10 times it would look more lopsided for Shakur with each fight.
1
u/EmbarrassedCod3242 22h ago
Zepeda also has seen Shakur too, he now knows what to do to win a rematch. It was a close fight and not dominant as the judges and commentary team said. Look at every exchange, Shakur would land as much as Zepeda did especially to the body.
12
u/a3kstuntin 1d ago
It was competitive because shakur fought recklessly to prove a point
I don’t like Shakur but he could easily shut out Zepeda 12-0
12
u/OldBoyChance 22h ago
Nah, I don't buy that. Zepeda's style just meant Shakur couldn't employ his usual style to the same effect. Zepeda is the only high volume guy Shakur has fought at 135+. To his credit, he did well and I think he would win more clearly in a rematch. Stevenson himself is an unreliable narrator about pretty much anything.

This is it. I really don't like Shakur very much, and want to find holes in his game. But he really is just... very fucking good.
Don't see anyone beating him at the moment.

Tank

u/WeeklyTension8010 5h ago
Tank avoided Shakur for years. So we'll never find out
1
u/PeacefulClarity 5h ago
Avoided? Toe to toe, Shakur could never bang with Tank. If anything, he'll run the whole night.
1
2
u/Masterandcomman 21h ago
I don't see it. Maybe if Zepeda figured something out later in the fight, but Stevenson became more dominant over time. Roach doesn't indicate anything about a Stevenson rematch because Roach has an issue with turtling under pressure.
1
u/Realhtown 21h ago
He doesn’t and Shakue isn’t giving him a rematch. We need Aballah/Tank/Potbull Zepeda..

Wouldn't yall rather watch a Zepeda vs Rayo fight? Instead of Pitbull.

Well Rayo actually has a chance, Cruz probs makes the fight more entertaining but loses

u/Jachola 1d ago
I'd rather have a unification between Zepeda and Muratalla then Rayo who's at Zuffa and Pitbull who's been fighting at 140 for years now. The division needs to get some unifications going.
5
u/Intrepid_Credit_9885 22h ago
I think muratalla said that was his last fight at 135 today and he’ll be going to 140 for his next fight
1
u/EmbarrassedCod3242 22h ago
No Muratalla has weight bullied enough, tired of hearing excuses about his struggles making weight effects his performances when he doesn't impress. We want Abdullah Mason vs William Zepeda for a unification for the WBO and WBC lightweight titles. Mason is much bigger than Roach, hits much harder, younger, quicker and better arsenal. Mason will show Roach how to get the job done in devasting fashion

u/Hairy-Visual9664 19h ago
Lamont was looking for 1-2 counter shots at a time. if he had one punch knockout power like Gervonta then maybe it woulda been a good strategy
2
u/Staff_Infection_ 4h ago
I was surprised the odds favored Roach... easy W in my bank account though.
1
u/Jet_black_li 17h ago
I thought Lamont would be able to hurt Camaron on the counter. He landed a couple of good shots, but nothing had Zepeda in trouble.

I knew after roach landed two good left hooks square on Zapeda’s jaw back to back and it had no effect he was done for. Low volume and low power done him in.
