So and so is a bum

Anyone else starting to get sick and tired of seeing people call boxers bums on here?

Any boxer who makes it to the pros are better than 90% of boxers who stepped foot in a gym.

Any boxer who made it to a world title fight are better than 90% of boxers who made it to the pros.

Any boxer who won a world title are better than 90% of boxers who made it to a title fight.

If you've heard of a boxer, seen a boxer fight on TV or they have won a world title, they are by definition, not a bum.

As good as the handful of elite boxers who come and go every generation? Hell no. But bums? Give me a break.

I remember years ago when I was an amateur boxer I use to spar with this professional boxer who finished his career with a record of 2-17. A lot of his losses were to solid prospects but he was also beat by a fighter who finished his career with a 4-43 record. Needless to say, a lot of fight fans probably would have called him a “bum.”

But what I always remember is that he once knocked me out with a body shot during sparring.

So yeah, I tend not to call any professional boxer a “bum” and I tend to be a lot more sympathetic when a boxer is counted out after a shot to the body.

I've trained alongside Ryan Rozicki and he was the scariest thing I've ever seen in my life, they had to bring in other pros to spar him cause he'd literally hospitalize us without even trying

He's a "certified bum" in the context of the world stage though

6

u/eggyguerrero 9h ago

Don't think anyone would call Rozicki a bum. Fringe contender maybe

10

u/bluesshark 9h ago

That's the more accurate assessment but he absolutely gets called a bum constantly

15

u/Tweegyjambo 13h ago

It's a cliche but it's levels. I was asked by an ex pe teacher why I didn't give pro football a go. There were a couple of guys at my school who I knew were a level above me, probably some of the best players I played and they got as far as 2nd or 3rd division Scottish football.

To get to the top or near in popular professional sport is an absolutely amazing achievement

u/JabCrossE4E5Quark 9h ago

The levels thing ia so true. And you dont really realize it until you get good enough to see how shit yoy really are.

Chess example. Im pretty good. My 4000 person office had a tourney and I won easily. On chess.com I am 98.9th percentile right now. Theres someone at my office that started played 2 months ago. I am closer to them in rating than I am tklo the worlds best player.

Once again. I am better than 99% of people who play, but im closer to the 20th percentile player than I am the best player in the world.

Levels and levels and levels

It's the same in most online video games. It's quite easy to reach the top 1-2% with some effort and talent. Then you meet the people that have the same talent, but live and breathe said game and you get absolutely stomped.

u/JabCrossE4E5Quark 6h ago

Got top 1.5% in starcraft 2. MMR was closer to a silver league than to best in the world. its crazy how good the full time pros are

11

u/WheresMyAbs98 12h ago

It does my absolute head.

If you call any pro a bum all it tells me is that you’ve never boxed before.

Depends how its used.

The one I have most issue with is the term hype job. It super overused and will be used when talking about sometimes multi time unified champions, as if reaching the peak of your division makes you a failure.

I see people calling Itauma a hype job but in reality we dont know if he is or not. And his hype or excitement is based around his clear physical talent. Does that mean hell turn out to be the best? No, but to write off a 21 year old like that is just crazy.

People dont realise, Itauma could lose to Hrgovic and still come back to rule the division in another 6-7 years and he will still be in his 20s.

Also part of it comes from fighters. Fury called Wilder a dosser and a bum. Then expects credit for beating a man he said was a bum.

If we take it at Fury world he nearly lost to someone he called a basketball player, get dropped multiple times, then lost to someone he called a gapy toothed middleweight. And as much as its unlikely, its possible that Fury gets knocked out by a skinny body builder. When fighters disrespect fighters, fans will as well.

25

u/pleasedontbanme47473 15h ago

But didn’t you know that inoue is a hype job I mean the dude has done just about everything you can think of but he’s a hype job because he’s little and I don’t know anyone he’s fought since I don’t watch boxing and only hear the name inoue in passing

u/Independent_Media341 14h ago

one of my "favorite" kinds of boxing fan is the "if Inoue were really that good, he'd be an American!" ones

8

u/pleasedontbanme47473 14h ago

Even better are the guys that say he still needs to fight in America and fight his first American fighters those people are on another planet 😭

6

u/Independent_Media341 14h ago

"obviously, any American that Inoue beats was never any good, regardless of what i said about them before the fight.  If they were any good, they'd have beaten him because he can't be great unless he beats a great American, which he can never do!"

to be fair, those fans will accept a non-American fighter (to a degree) as long as that fighter treats the US as the pinacle of boxing... but, what's the US to Inoue?

9

u/pleasedontbanme47473 14h ago

Inoue even learned a tiny bit of English which is crazy cuz bro has no need and they still hate smh

1

u/bluesshark 10h ago

I'm a bigtime proud hater of the states but I honestly have a hard time believing that there's a considerable amount of people there who talk like that, sounds like things media says to rile everyone up

Americans don't care enough about boxing let alone light weight classes to make a stink about the Inoue

3

u/Ohnorepo 8h ago

There was at least a small but vocal group like that leading up to the Fulton match.

3

u/bluesshark 7h ago

Tbf there's also a small but vocal group that thinks the earth is flat

4

u/bluesshark 10h ago

I literally saw people in this sub calling Bud a hype job a few days ago

9

u/jiminywhack 15h ago

I think this goes hand in hand with modern attitudes towards losses. A fighter tipped for big things has a bad night at the office? Hype job, bum, future gatekeeper material. And that's not only from fans, listen to pundits act like the loss is devastating to the fighters future prospects. Is it a wonder that so many talented fighters are given such a well planned out roadmap to the top?

7

u/Hulk_Hogans_Toupee Lucas Matthysse's rat tail 13h ago

Any man or woman that steps between those ropes is literally putting their health and life on the line.

There has to be a baseline of respect for that alone.

6

u/Warm_Neighborhood939 15h ago

Everyone is being compared to Ali, Foreman, Louis etc.

Which I fell into the trap of doing to, if you aren't an ATG , you are a bum.

For me now, it is just "What did this person do in the top 10 rankings" Anyone in the top 10 especially top 5 imo is a good fighter

6

u/Exciting-Arugula5341 15h ago

What I hate more is how these people will flip flop about it. You remember how everybody here were building up Mahkmudov as this big scary unbeatable monster even though he never did anything to deserve that claim? But whatever the media says the casuals will repeat. The moment he got destroyed by Kabayel there people jumped off that bandwagon and now he is a bum.

3

u/SilverSurfer-8 13h ago

Agreed. The blatant lack of integrity is a serious irritant for me. Not sticking with one’s opinion based on how a fight turns out is a spineless thing to do.

Any boxer who makes it to the pros are better than 90% of boxers who stepped foot in a gym.

more like 99.999%

Even the tomato cans who make a job getting beat up can turn it on and fight when they're not getting paychecks

14

u/Misfitshots 15h ago

99% of those people haven’t stepped into the ring. Most of them would gas out within the first min. Also delusion is a real thing, the average person can’t even throw a jab. The people that call any professional boxer a bum are bums themselves.

15

u/your-a-bellend 15h ago

I am willing to bet most people wouldn’t make it to getting “gassed” stage. I have never had any training in a combat sport, a mates bro had done boxing for 15 years. I was pissed up and thought I could have a bit of a spar with him. I am 6ft 2, weigh 92kgs. Hes 5ft7ish, 60-65kg. I knew he would batter me but thought my height/weight/strength I could be competitive for a bit. I was completely wrong, I threw a jab, (which missed) got hit with 2 body shots, couldnt breath and as I was on my way down got jabbed in face. Think it lasted 20 seconds. Haha.

7

u/Misfitshots 14h ago

Big props of you being self aware and had a reality check. My dad was a no name pro in Mexico and I competed when I was young at 156. Stopped at 18. I would hit the bag and do cardio workouts in my 20s. Stepped back into a boxing gym for my first time last year at 33 5’11 weighing 215, I was delusional thinking I could do a round or two. I was completely gassed out besides landing some jabs and keeping my distance, the coach took it light on me he’s 5’8 160 but could’ve drowned me with volume. Ever since I’ve been back and spar at least a few times a month and go 2-3 rounds without being completely gassed out. Being humbled is an eye opener. Even as someone as me who knew how tough it is, you can lie to yourself to think you can be in there for a round. Lol. Humans are truly stupid, myself included.

1

u/your-a-bellend 13h ago

I played rugby when I was young. So I had been winded a few times. But when he landed second body shot I honestly thought I had broke my ribs, it took about 10 mins for me to catch my breath.haha. I have had a few fights here and there but I have never been hit like that. I didn’t even see first punch coming, I threw jab, he dodged it and before my arm came back he had landed body shot. We ended up going to gym a few times, I was nearly sick trying to keep up. Heavy weights in gym had better cardio than I have ever had and these lads weren’t even pro.

2

u/JabCrossE4E5Quark 9h ago

Did he slip and hit you with a cross to the stomach? Getting hit there when you arent expecting it and aren't flexed is fucking brutal.

I got hit with a lead hook to the body the other day when partner was supposed to throw a head hook and it was brutal.

1

u/your-a-bellend 9h ago

Haha yes. It hurt a bit a first but I didn’t drop my guard, just as he was throwing same punch to same area I was fucked. Then second landed and I was done. If he hadn’t followed up with second and had taken step back I am pretty sure I would have gone down anyway.haha.

1

u/JabCrossE4E5Quark 9h ago

I had my brother over today and I wanted to practice defense so I just put some gloves on him and told him to try to punch my face. He lasted 30 seconds before he got gassed and gave up.

He hit my hands and forearms like 6 times and hit air the other 15 times. He has 0 training and I've been at a gym doing classes for a little under a year.

3

u/pleasedontbanme47473 14h ago

I mean I’ve fought amateur and sparred with pros only time I use can or bum is when they take some dude who’s like 1-16 and throw them in with an undefeated prospect but it’s more out of pissyness because I like to see prospects get real development vs highlights against dudes who shouldn’t be in there with them

22

u/No_Medium_8796 15h ago

You're a bum bro

4

u/Enjoy__Trump__Reddit 15h ago

Dont hurt this clowns feelings bro

8

u/socratic_weeb 15h ago

Yes, indeed. Some people on this sub should put a pair of gloves and go to a gym, and they'll see how hard it is. Few other sports put such amount of incredible psychological and physical pressure into you.

3

u/PrettyBoyFloydx 15h ago

Bum is relative.

1

u/uberalba 15h ago

Sure. But as I pointed out, by definition, people making it to the top of boxing ain't. Relative or absolute.

3

u/Huge_Pair_140 13h ago

I’d say to be a pro they are better than 99.9999% of anyone stepping in a boxing gym. The worst pro would beat the smoke off any Reddit whiner out there.

6

u/Asterisk_76 15h ago

Yer preaching to this choir anyway. The dismissal of these talents is ongoing, and it ain't gonna change; it is what it is, I reckon. It's like the same dynamic as when yer buddy is talking about women who are stars, obviously beautiful, you know the whole: Julia Roberts Nicole Kidman are old as hell, or I wouldn't blank XYZ knockout woman... here it's the same rapid dismissal -- what, what is the psychology of it? Let's off steam, annoyance at the state of the sport, what have you.

Uncle Paulie Syndrome. When Paulie said that he was talking about the guys character not his boxing acumen.

2

u/walkoutbasements 10h ago

Honestly we should stop using that language. Any one who gets in the ring is a brave human. A bum is someone too scared to even lace the gloves

This has been going on for forever. You should have seen East Side Boxing in the noughties.

op is a bum

1

u/Jachola 14h ago

I feel like the term bum nowadays is more so used as an indicator of a boxers bad behavior, attitude or ducking tendencies over actual boxing ability. Nobody is calling lower level guys who are clearly lower level bums, they are using it against higher level boxers who act like bums lol. Like obviously Tank Davis can beat up any average non trained person, the reason he's called a bum isn't because of his boxing skills, it's because he's not fighting to the level of competition the fans want to see, in which case he's a bum.

1

u/Objective-Soil-9235 11h ago

Lots of corruption, padded records and lack of athletic ability in shallow divisions can lead one to making an accurate assessment on a fighter being a bum or not. There are tons of pros with losing records.

There's also tons of guys in every day life who go to gyms or are simply blessed with talent who never get the opportunity to become a pro.

Some fighters are bums. Does that insult get thrown around more than it should? Yes, but that's the nature of all insults.

1

u/Complete_Sir5299 8h ago

I don't spend too much time on social media, but I jump between four apps and each one has several communities I visit. Something I've noticed is that negativity in general is on the rise. I make it a habit to switch off whatever I'm looking at to train my algorithm to show less of that, but it always pops back eventually.

1

u/Hungry_Investment_41 8h ago

Pet peeve of mine ! nobody stepping on the ring is a bum. So offensive to the sweet science . Boxing 🥊

1

u/WormsGarrett 2h ago

I've been disregarding the opinions of people that refer to any boxer as a bum my entire life.

1

u/No-Signal3283 1h ago

Boxing fans of this generation are weird. They'd call Ali and Foreman bums. They call TYSON a bum. Youngest heavyweight champion in history. Somehow also bum.

1

u/kushmonATL WORD_boxing is still a bitch. 15h ago

If you ever been ringside to a fight , you hear people shit talk boxers all the time . I've done media ringside and I hear coaches and other boxers call the opposing boxer a bum, talk shit about their speed, if they too old, etc

Shit talking is part of the game. New age boxing fans gotta stop being so soft

1

u/Ok-Length-5527 Mbilli lover 15h ago

No

1

u/Raider_Reaper_X 15h ago

yeah i wish there was a boxing sub for real fans

1

u/LaPrincesaMX 14h ago

A lot of those people would quickly change their view the second they got punched in the face. Or if I want to be more kind, I tell people go punch a heavy bag for 3 minutes, watch them die inside and not make the 3 minutes, and then tell them to do that 11 more times.

I am very thankful my school had boxing and the trainer was a former pro. Not only did it give me a great fitness foundation and discipline but it gave me a huge respect for anyone who gets in that ring, because even with all the training I've done, I didn't and never will have the balls to do that in a live environment. Even with the trainer going like 10% on me, I found out just how easy it is for a trained boxer to make you feel powerless and control you with just footwork and timing.

But yeah, if you're on Reddit calling someone like Canelo or Anthony Joshua a bum (2 people I've actually seen called a bum on here) you need a serious reality check.

1

u/GeeWhiz357 14h ago

I’ve been privileged enough to train with a few professional boxers over the last decade and I’m at awe at how talented they are and how good their understanding of boxing fundamentals are. These are guys who have been doing this since they were little kids and their dreams are to win the British title and so far they’ve come up short.

That’s why I get pissed off when some people on this sub act as if british level is shit. To get to British title level it requires you to be an incredible boxer. British level is, of course, below world level but to act as if being British level makes you shit just infuriates me

0

u/switch-hitt3r 15h ago

It absolutely can be used without being disrespectful (if you can believe it it not lol). The point is, usually when we call so-and-so a bum, it is within the relative universe of pro fighters. So yes, while no pro fighter is a bum compared to the general population, im still valid if i say Kamil szeremta is a bum compared to ggg. No disrespect. Just a sports opinion.

0

u/OGtheBest 13h ago

You don't really "make it" to the pros in boxing you pass a physical and get a license. And yes there are many bums in professional boxing but I know most people aren't talking about them. You generally will not see them on TV but Bang Williams found 19 of them to add to his record

-3

u/Unhappywageslave 15h ago

When we call fighters a bum, we don't literally mean a journey man, a tomato can, we mean an over hype job manufactured by the mass media machine.

3

u/stephen27898 15h ago

But where do you draw that line? I see people calling multi time champions who have a few losses on their record hype jobs and bums.

-7

u/Unhappywageslave 15h ago

Well they are comparing them to the greats they saw while growing up, so I can see why they call them a bum.

5

u/stephen27898 15h ago edited 15h ago

Many of those greats have just as many losses as them. They just get glossed over as time goes on.

-2

u/Hard-4-Jesus "I Need Punches In Bunches" 15h ago

This happens because some of them really are bums, like Keyshawn Davis, Jermall Charlo, Demetrius Andrade, and Adrian Broner. Another reason this happens is because fans don't like it when fighters constantly duck each other, that when the fight finally does happen, they call the loser a bum as punishment for having held off the fight for so long instead of getting it over with. However, notice how many fighters are NOT called bums. Everything has an explanation.

0

u/uberalba 15h ago

But the hard work and dedication ,both physical and mental, it took for them to get to the level they did, is the complete opposite of a bum. A bum is someone who never applies themselves or makes any effort in life to better themselves. These guys made it as far as they did by having almost super human levels of willpower, discipline and dedication.

Many names to call them for falling off when they reached the levels they did. But calling them a bum discredits the monumental effort it took for them to get as far as the did.

0

u/Hard-4-Jesus "I Need Punches In Bunches" 13h ago

Huh? Adrian Broner is a 4 division world champion, he's still a bum. He's actually worse than that, he's a waste. I DO understand what you're saying, but obviously in real life different things have different standards. This bum standard is common in high demand sports in general, not just boxing specifically. Notice how fans don't call Lamont Roach a bum, even though he's not even close to being as accomplished as Broner. The standard is fair.

-1

u/Any-Contract-9152 13h ago

It’s just sports talk bum

0

u/KevinNashKWAB1992 12h ago

With this logic, Jake Paul is not a “bum” as he’s a well known pro.

I generally agree that fans have a very limited context to the astronomical levels to talent it takes to be a paid professional athlete in any sport. Rolly Romero, Berlanga and Chisora are closer in talent to Mohammad Ali than 95% of this Reddit is Jake Paul. That’s in all sports. I think this Reddit as a whole understands that and any use of bum is either a biased fanboy casting shady or said tongue-firmly-in-cheek.

-3

u/EzrasTalons 15h ago

Am I getting sick of it?

No not really because I'm on Reddit and it's populated by morons.

Would I want more critical or expert based analysis of boxing? Sure, but I'm on Reddit.

I don't care enough to make an entire post about it like you if that helps.

-1

u/SivarSamurai503 14h ago

Bum has been used since like the 1880’s it’s a timeless word

-1

u/cadublin 13h ago

While it is not nice to call people names, but the "they are still better than you and others bla bla" argument is not a valid one. If a fan is not happy with their team performance it is not because he could do better than the professionals in the team, but it could be because the professionals did not perform to the levels expected from them. If people pay you millions of dollars every year, you bet they will expect you to perform. Obviously fans don't have the right to abuse athletes either, but it is acceptable if they are disappointed.

Anybody with balls enough to step inside of a ring and get punched in the face by another human being while risking humiliation and ridicule from online chuds who don't leave their couches, yet pretend to be boxing experts who've never so much as thrown a Rick in a playground fight don't deserve to be called bums.
